Configuration of DNS Server

DNS Server is required in the translation of alphanumeric address to the IP address. If you want to configure DNS Server, then follow these steps:

Click on the Start, point to All Programs, click on the Administrative Tools and then click on the Configure Your Server Wizard. After this, on the Server Role page, click on the DNS server and then click on Next. Then on the Selections page, view and confirm the choices that you have opted. After this, you will see two options on the screen. These are “Install DNS” and “Run the Configure a DNS Wizard” to configure DNS. Then click on the Next.

If these options are not viewed, then click Back to return to the Server Role page, click on DNS and then click on the Next. After performing this, the Server Wizard installs the DNS service. For installing this service, it will first check whether the IP address for this server is static or is configured automatically. If the IP address for the server is configured automatically, then it will prompt you to configure this server with a static IP address. For performing this, you have to follow these steps:

In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click on Properties. After this, you will view an Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box. In this dialog box, click on the Use the following IP address and then type the static IP address along with the subnet mask and default gateway for this server. After performing this, in the Preferred DNS, type the IP address of this server. In this way, you can set the static addresses for your DNS Server, click on OK and then click on Close.

After you click on Close, the “Configure a DNS Server Wizard ” starts. In the wizard, you have to follow these steps:

On the Select Configuration Action page, pick out the Create a forward lookup zone check box and then click on Next. After this, on the Primary Server Location page, click on This server maintains the zone and then click on Next. Then on the Zone Name page, in Zone name, specify the name of the DNS zone for your network and then click on Next. The name of the zone will be the same as the name of the DNS domain for your small organization or branch office. On the Dynamic Update page, click on Allow both nonsecure and secure dynamic updates and then click Next. This ensures that the DNS resource records for the resources in your network update automatically.

On the Forwarders page, click Yes. It will forward queries to DNS servers with the following IP addresses and then click Next. When you pick out this configuration, you forward all DNS queries for DNS names outside your network to a DNS at either your ISP or central office. Then type one or more IP addresses that either your ISP or central office DNS servers use. On Completing the Configure a DNS Wizard page of the Configure a DNS Wizard, you can click Back to modify any settings. Then click on Finish.
