Decimals are numbers, with a decimal point in it, like these:

1.5, 0.6, 3.14 their opposites, and zero.

Decimal numbers are used commonly in Banks, To display their interest rate. They are alsoused while measuring distance, temperature heights etc..

Lets take an example

523, 52.3, 5.23, 0.523

These three numbers above have the same three digits, in the same order, yet they are all different.

Take a good look at them.

523 is a whole number, and would be read as Five hundred and twenty three

The second number 52.3 contains a decimal point, marking the end of the whole number, and would be read as Fifty two point three.

523, 52.3, 5.23, 0.523

The third also contains a decimal point, and would be read as Five point two three (not five point twenty three).

The last decimal 0.523 contains no whole number, and it begins with a zero before the decimal point. It would be read as zero point five two three.

The digits of the number to the left of the decimal pointrepresent the whole number.

Digits on the right of the point are decimal fractions

If there is no whole number, the decimal will begin with a zeroin the units position.

Digits after the decimal point are readindividually.

Remember

DECIMALS can be shown as points on a number line.

Zero is the Origin.

decimal on the right of zero are

POSITIVE.

decimal on the left of zero are NEGATIVE.

We can also compare two Decimals by comparingthe digits in each place value position

T O . T H Th 3 . 4 7

3 . 8 2

Start at the left and compare the digits in each place- value position . In the ones place , the digits are the same . In the tenths place , 4 < 8 , So, 3.47 < 3.82

Lets take an example : Compare 3.47 and 3.82

Align the numbers by their decimal points

2.) Compare 0.1 and 0.10. Are the equal?

6/1/1 Comparing and Ordering Integers

Yes they are equal as the whole number part and fraction part is same and adding Zero’s to the right of a decimal number makes no difference to the number
