November 17, 2019 – From the Desk of the Pastor…
Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever!
Dear Friends,
One time a man was making fun of women who go to confession so often: “For every
man going to confession, you’ll find thirty women.” Back came the retort from the
woman in the crowd: “And that’s why you’ll find thirty men in jail for every
woman!”
During the 4th century a world-famous scholar, but a great sinner, envisioned a good
way to assess value and put the soul in its proper perspective. He asked himself this
question: “If all these fellows have been able to do it, why can’t you, a scholar, do
likewise?” This sentence made a saint of the great scholar who changed his way of
life. His name was Augustine. A young and rich noble in the 12th century thought
about the same thing. “If so many have been able to do it, why can’t I?” He was
Bernard of Clairveaux. In the 16th century an aggressive soldier was wounded and
while recuperating read many saints’ biographies. “If they could do it, couldn’t I?”
His name was Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits.
And now, in the year 2019, who among us will continue this tradition? Will you
become the saint God desires you to become? The answer is in how you live today.
Sincerely in Christ,
Jason (priest and sinner)
PS: Divine Liturgy each Tuesday at 12 pm. There will be a short sermon on Church
Fathers each Tuesday. This week: St. Gregory Nazianzen
Sunday Gospel Reading
Sunday Gospel According to St. Luke 13:10-17
10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And there was a
woman who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and
could not fully straighten herself. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to
her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.” 13 And he laid his hands upon her,
and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. 14 But the ruler of the
synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people,
“There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed,
and not on the sabbath day.” 15 Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does
not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead it away
to water it? 16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound
for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?” 17 As he said this, all
his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things
that were done by him.
Events at Holy Trinity ☛Congratulations to Bishop John Bura on his retirement! Many blessed years to you,

☛ Abby Johnson - Tickets Selling Fast! On December 5 at 7:00 PM Saints John &
Paul welcomes Abby Johnson as part of our Boldly Catholic Speaker Series. Abby
Johnson is the author of the nationally best-selling book, Unplanned, which
chronicles both her experiences within Planned Parenthood and her dramatic
exit. Tickets are $20 and available at greatgrouping.org/johnson
In order to keep our cemetery
beautiful, we will need to make a few
rate adjustments. Effective Jan. 1st, as per our recent PAC meeting, price increases are
as follows: Parishioner rate will increase from $500 to $1,000. Non-parishioner rate
will increase from $800 to $1,500. This is still below the rate of almost every area
cemetery. Grave opening/closing rates will increase from $1,350 to $1,500. Also, at
the time of opening/closing, there will be an option to contribute 10% of the opening
cost toward a perpetual care fund. As a church operated cemetery, we are not legally
bound to have a “Perpetual Care Fund” for our cemetery but starting such a fund will
only help us in covering our expenses. Between now and Dec. 31st cemetery plots are
still available at the current rate. Concerns? Call Fr. Jason at office.
“WE KNEW NOT WHETHER WE WERE IN
HEAVEN OR ON EARTH” …Continued from last week
What is it that we ought to see when we walk into a Byzantine church? The chief
function of iconography is to instruct and elevate. The selection of icons depicting
events of salvation history is intended to instruct us in those truths of faith that are most
important. These icons should reflect the cosmic order, with the floor level
representing the earthly, and the ceiling representing the heavenly. From this
perspective, we the faithful are at the same time in heaven and on earth, and
iconography—where the temporal and the eternal intersect—can help us know this.
In the central dome of the nave we see Christ Pantocrator, master of the visible and
invisible universe: the Almighty looking down upon His world. The Pantocrator icon
constitutes the summit within the hierarchy of the cosmic imagery.
In the apse (the semi-circular wall in the sanctuary), midway between the dome and the
floor, we see the Theotokos, Birth-giver of God and the “bridge” between heaven and
earth. Below her on the wall (but visible over the altar) we see the Mystical Supper—
the Communion of the Apostles—exemplar of the Eucharist, with Christ as the priest
and angels as acolytes.
Lower than the central dome (below Christ Pantocrator) but on the upper level is
depicted major events from the Old and New Testaments. On the lower walls are
saints, heavenly counterparts of the faithful assembled to worship the one true God.
At the back of the church, moving from the nave into the narthex, we often see the
Dormition of Theotokos or the Last Judgment, important reminders to the faithful as
we "go forth in peace" after the liturgy.
At the front of the church, separating the nave from the sanctuary—but at the same
time uniting the nave to the sanctuary—we see the iconostas. The most prominent
and distinctive visual element of the interior of a Byzantine church, the iconostas
offers a theological feast for our eyes.
(final installment in next week’s bulletin)
