Workshop Options - All registrants will attend the same AM workshop. Please choose 1 PM break-out Session

Please Choose 1 Afternoon break-out session A. Selena Lee: Ins, Outs, UPS and Downs of Teaching Physical Development: Teaching young children physical activities can be challenging. It can also be fun! This workshop offers techniques for skill development through songs, games, and circuits with a focus on what children and educators need to become successful in this area. This workshop is presented so enthusiastically you will be rushing to implement what you learned. B. Joanne Schroeder: Compassionate Leadership: Social and emotional learning is a process by which we develop compassion, a strong sense of self, manage emotions and maintain healthy relationships. These are the skills that we hope for our children and that we need as system leaders. This workshop will provide specific skills and strategies for building compassionate leadership in our practice. C. Ashleigh Martinflatt: Trauma Informed Care for Children Birth to Five: This workshop provides an introduction to trauma and how it impacts children birth to five years of age. Participants will learn about the physical, emotional, social and spiritual ramifications of trauma in the early years and be provided with practical suggestions for caring for these children. This workshop is intended to provide caregivers with tools to assist them in providing a trauma informed environment for children. D. Donna Klockars: The Early Language/ Literacy Family Support Project (ELLF): This workshop will review the four strands that the Education Team at Snawnawas First Nations Head Start program has recently implemented. They have made a strong commitment to providing speech and language programs that are play based and culturally appropriate, on going professional learning opportunities, family literacy outreach projects, and Hulquimi’num language study. The ELLF project workshop will provide participants with examples of how we supported our early childhood educators to deliver quality speech and language strategies while building community family literacy programs.

Keynote Presentation

“Discipline Without Damage: See it. Feel it. Be it.”

When a child is threatening a meltdown, is it really possible to keep your cool, get the behaviour turned around, and support healthy development, all at the same time?! Parents, caregivers and big people of all kinds will discover how discipline affects children’s development, why our reactions to our children’s behavior should reinforce connection instead of introduce more upset, and why the disciplinary strategies that may have been used on us as children are not the ones that children really need. In addition, you’ll learn: how the concept of "childhood" has been understood in different ways historically and why we must understand it anew today; the basic and impactful truth behind Dr. Vanessa’s mantra "See it, feel it, be it"; and the foundation of a healthy, effective approach to discipline that respects your child’s developmental needs...and works!

Morning Workshop

What Children Need: Understanding trauma, emotional regulation and anxiety in the growing child: A child’s most essential need is the experience of a deep, connected relationship with at least one caring adult. The presence of this caring adult allows neurological and developmental processes to unfold exactly as nature intended. The child’s belief that they are worthy and that their world is safe and secure grows from this relationship. The child’s capacity to experience big unsettling emotions, and then calm, grows from this relationship. Thus, to make sense of anxiety, trauma, and challenges with emotional regulation, we must first understand the inner workings of this relationship for the child, the complexity of the developing brain, and how it all comes together to inform nurturing responses and interventions. Dr. Lapointe will discuss exactly how all of this happens through the science and heart of child development, and what caregivers can do to facilitate these processes so that children get exactly what they need to grow and thrive.
