Round Table Speakers

Round Table 1

Aleksandra Njagulj, Head of Sustainability, Bouygues UK

‘Assessing and Minimising the Embodied Impact using Building Information Modelling’

Aleksandra Njagulj, MSc Arch, MAID, BREEAM and CfSH Assessor,

BREEAM Accredited Professional

Aleksandra is an architect with over 10 years of architectural practice in

design and design management gained before moving to sustainability

specialty. She is currently leading the ‘Sustainability Hub’ – a team of in-

house sustainability experts within the Bouygues UK Technical

Department.

Sustainability Hub is dealing with all sustainability related aspects of project management, design,

construction and aftercare. The team is also in charge of company sustainable assessment process,

certification and sustainability training, tools and practices as well as varied R&D activities in synergy

with both other Technical Department experts (BIM, M&E, structures, etc) and external partners.

Questions for Round Table

Building Information Modelling has been advocated for its potential delivery of more innovative,

cost-efficient buildings through more integrated information and collaboration. Yet the inherent

power of BIM is its potential contribution to the design, construction and commissioning of buildings

with lower environmental impacts, whether this is in the form of energy-efficiency, the cutting of

carbon or for better use of fewer materials.

The aim of this round table discussion is to demonstrate how embodied impacts (embodied carbon,

materials use, waste, maintenance, etc) can be minimised through the use of specialist environment

analysis applications. Topics to be discussed shall include the following:

Ways to reduce the embodied carbon – LCA

The embodied carbon assessment ‘tools’ (Impact (IES), Butterfly, Rapiere, EPG, BRE’s GReen Guide ratings, LCC analysis, embodied carbon databases and standards)

Designing out embodied impacts through use of BIM

Round Table 2

Chloe Obi, BIM Manager, Bouygues UK

‘Utilisation of Building Information Modelling to Enhance Environmental Optimisation’

At Bouygues UK we have developed an industry leading approach to

implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) on our projects. This is

supported by comprehensive processes that comply with PAS 1192 /2+3

and BS 1192-4 2014, led by our Group BIM Manager, architect, Chloe Obi.

Chloe leads our team of BIM Coordinators and provides on-going support

across our projects, throughout all regions, delivering training, providing

advice and supporting initial BIM set up and continued BIM

implementation. Chloe is also a BRE BIM Level 2 Accredited Professional

(BIM AP) as well as a certified BRE Professional Project / Task Information Manager.

Chloe leads the implementation of BIM at Bouygues UK, ideally starting at the commencement of

the design stage and in order to be effective and to maximise the benefits and efficiencies derived

from using BIM, she is partially responsible for ensuring that all key project stakeholders adopt

common processes and buy-in to its use, i.e. client, designers, consultants, contractors and key

supply chain members at the necessary stages of a projects lifecycle.

In implementing BIM she has also established a process of assessment of each of the stakeholders,

which provides a profile of their IT and BIM capabilities. Training and support needs are evaluated

and taken account of in Bouygues UK’s BIM Execution Plan (BEP) which details how BIM shall be

implemented on a scheme and which was produced by Chloe herself.

In addition to the above Chloe has experience in all aspects of BIM from 3D Design Coordination, 4D

Phasing and Sequencing, 5D Cost, 6D Asset Management, through to structural and environmental

optimisation.

Questions for Round Table

Building Information Modelling has been advocated for its potential delivery of more innovative,

power of BIM is its potential contribution to the design, construction and commissioning of buildings

with lower environmental impacts, whether this is in the form of energy-efficiency, the cutting of

carbon or for better use of fewer materials. The aim of this round table discussion is to demonstrate

how waste (primarily at the early project phase) can be eliminated through the use of specialist

environment analysis applications. Topics to be discussed shall include the following:

A review of the relationship between BIM and energy analysis and its role as a regime to run the process

Energy analysis to achieve the efficient performance buildings through BIM

The application of BIM for Energy Analysis

Round Table 3 Chris Halligan, Stephen George & Partners ‘Specifying Sustainable Materials and Using Digital Tools’

Chris joined Stephen George & Partners’ Leeds office in 1995,

became an Associate Director in 2005 and Director in 2010.

Chris has experience of a wide range of architectural projects

ranging from underground housing and conservation projects in

rural environments to large commercial developments.

Chris is chair of Stephen George & Partners’ Design and Technology

Steering Group and, with like-minded colleagues advises the

practice and our clients on matters relating to technical matters,

environmental issues and sustainable design.

His research into low energy buildings both for the practice and as part of a MSc project in

Sustainable Architecture gained him qualification with distinction in 2009.

Chris has recently co-authored Stephen George & Partners’ Guide to Building Materials and the

Environment which has received plaudits from sustainable design professionals around the world

and in October 2011 was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects President’s Award for

Outstanding Practice-located Research.

A roundtable to discuss the digital tools available to the specifier seeking sustainable materials and

their effect on the design process

Questions for Round Table

Framework for discussion and questions to be addressed;

What defines a material as ‘sustainable,’ and how can we make informed choices in

specification?

Is the variety of assessment systems reflected in the availability of corresponding digital

tools?

Is the variety of systems available a barrier to agreement of protocols within the design

team?

Does the limitation of digital tools prevent an accurate assessment of sustainability?

Will an eventual ‘industry standard,’ result in more or less understanding in the design

team?

Round table 4

Elrond Burrell, Associate, Architype Ltd

‘How is BIM best used for Passivhaus design?’

Elrond Burrell is an architect with over 15 years experience in

designing and delivering sustainable architecture. His two passions

and areas of expertise are Sustainable Design, particularly Passivhaus

and Timber construction, and Building Information Modeling (BIM).

Elrond is an associate in the Architype Hereford office and his role

encompasses project delivery and company wide BIM leadership. He

is a regularly public speaker in the UK and abroad on Sustainable

Design, BIM and Passivhaus. He is recognised on social media

platforms as an industry thought leader in BIM & sustainable design

and has been featured in the Architect's Journal and Building Design.

As we move towards a more sustainable future and meeting EU requirements for all buildings to be

“near-zero energy” by 2020, passivhaus is gaining importance and becoming mainstream in the UK.

How can BIM help with this?

Questions for the Round Table

What and how much PHPP (Passive Housing Planning Package) data should be generated from the geometry model?

Should geometry modeling techniques be altered to suit PHPP data requirements?

Should specific BIM components be created for Passivhaus design? If so, by whom and who should own / distribute them?

Should Passivhaus BIM authoring templates (Revit, ArchiCad, Bentley, Vectorworks etc) be created for the industry?

If so, by whom and who should own / distribute them?

Is the SketchUp plugin DesignPH “BIM”? If so what happens when the project moves beyond SketchUp?

Could BIM provide a means to demystify and encourage greater uptake of passivhaus so the UK can meet the EU requirements for near-zero energy buildings by 2020?
