Workshop 3: Defining and Measuring Well-

Being as a Multi-Dimensional Construct 15:30 - 17:00

FJ 303

If something is worth measuring, it is worth measuring well. This workshop is based on the

premise that subjective well-being is worth measuring, but is rarely measured well, and we need

to do better. Subjective well-being is worth measuring because how we experience our lives really

matters; it cannot be inferred from the objective facts of our lives. And while a high level of

subjective well-being has many instrumental or downstream benefits, the real reason it matters

is that it is an end in itself – an ultimate good.

Workshop participants will be invited to reflect on what gives their life a sense of well-being, and

how their insights might be captured in a high-quality survey measure. We will also explore the

extent to which subjective well-being can be measured using a single item or a single composite

score, which is the approach used in most surveys. We will discuss the value of a multi-

dimensional approach to the measurement of well-being, and present cross-national data

showing that countries with an identical score on a standard life satisfaction measure, may have

vastly different profiles on some dimensions that underlie well-being.

Findings such as this have important implications for policy. For a subjective well-being measure

to be useful for policy, we need not only a summary score, but also the ability to unpack that

score into its components, so that it is possible to identify which dimensions should be targeted

in a particular group or nation if we wish to improve well-being.
