Residential solar PV in the U.S. is undergoing major transformation with less leases and PPAs, more customer-owned systems, and a series of bankruptcies and market exits. This session will discuss the impact of such fundamental shifts on ongoing asset management of residential solar systems and portfolios, including the emergence of `backup service providers‘, and debate the potential role of maintenance/protection plans in expanding the reach of residential solar PV to mainstream consumers.

Financing at both the corporate and project level is vital for solar to continue to grow and storage will be an important catalyst in solar‘s growth prospects. But policies such as the ITC, solar tariffs from the Trump administration, and renewables or energy storage targets from government entities such as California, Massachusetts, New York, or Hawaii all drive investment activity. This panel will discuss the factors that lead financiers to support certain financing vehicles and encourage the expert panelists to offer their own vision for what would make for the most successful intersection between government policy and financing to encourage more industry progress.

In an effort to mitigate some of the challenges ahead, forward looking companies are seeking to utilize cutting edge technology to positively impact the financial value of projects. The next generation of solar technology is being designed to support an industry that is facing tighter margins, lower incentives, and a more sophisticated market. Demand is increasing for hardware that can offer advanced features that incorporate data analytics with intelligent software and seamlessly integrate within the energy ecosystem. This session will highlight these trends and identify how leaders in this space are preparing for the next wave of solar and energy storage.

The first two experts in this session will examine the details and data surrounding carbon pricing and the specific impacts of carbon pricing proposals upon the solar industry, and explanation of the current state of carbon pricing policy and legislation in America. The final speaker will describe current successful climate collaboration efforts among the top US tech companies and suggest how individuals and solar companies can collaborate with pragmatic, business friendly efforts to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions through higher prices for carbon intensive fuels in America and the world.

The pathways to a global 100% renewable energy system that meets all end-use energy needs must address numerous technical, financial and political challenges. This session features four global experts who will discuss the rationale as well as the theoretical and technical basis for a global transformation of our end-use energy system into 100% renewables. Specifically, the role of solar technologies in meeting our power sector needs as well as heating and cooling, building energy, and transportation needs, will be given emphasis, with demonstrations of how these strategies support expanded solar markets.

Achieving 100% renewable energy at the local and regional level will require expertise and demonstrated leadership to overcome the technical, political and financial barriers facing such a goal. This session features five experts with experience in overcoming these barriers and advocating for or guiding cities and regions to adopt 100% Renewable Energy strategies. Case studies of net-zero Plus homes, renewable cities, and regional and national initiatives will be included, demonstrating how these grass-roots activities are spurring large-scale renewable energy development.

It‘s no longer a “grid of the future” we‘re planning for, rather the transformation of our outdated electrical distribution system is underway today. As more Americans choose increasingly distributed energy resources, this trend introduces new challenges to the way our traditional electric system operates. A new forecasting and analysis tool known as Hosting Capacity Analysis (HCA) can help states ensure that a modern grid allows for the benefits of DERs to be fully realized by more individuals, businesses and institutions. Drawing from the lessons California, New York, Minnesota and Hawaii, this session will feature insights on what states and utilities should be considering as they use this tool and others to enable broader grid modernization or distribution planning reforms.

A power system home to millions of decentralised renewable energy plants, security of supply will depend on the smart alignment of supply and demand at any given moment. Against this background, digitalisation will play a crucial role! This session will shed light on an increasing smarter digitalized energy world, the opportunities, and how important questions of data management, access and security are being tackled. Questions include: How could such a digitalised system look and what are the challenges in its realisation? How to secure timely data-access for the different market-parties, while respecting the consumer‘s right to control their own data? How to secure inter-operability of different solutions and ensure cyber-security?

Although photovoltaics is an industrial mass production worldwide there is still plenty of room for innovation. New technologies, materials and highly productive manufacturing equipment are required to reduce production costs and increase efficiencies at the same time. This session discusses new developments that support the progress in PV production by identifying manufacturing and technology issues for each part of the value chain.

California is exploring ways to make its NEM tariff vary by location. New York is trying to build the ultimate value stack. Hawaii has resumed export compensation after a long period of self-consumption. Florida was supposed to start booming but hasn‘t. Other states are hitting caps and considering changes. Developers are learning how to balance NEM value and the ability of energy storage to maximize benefits behind the meter. This half-day course will focus on how to design and program PV systems when there is no net-metering. We will discuss rate structures including time-of-use, higher fixed fees, and demand charges, and investigate how these will affect system design, cost, and ROI, with a focus on residential-scale PV systems with and without energy storage. We will introduce the basics of storage technologies and integrated systems management as well as smart inverters. These concepts will be further explored as we look at a case study of a system in Hawaii (HECO territory) where net-metering has been discontinued and replaced with new tariffs of “self-supply”.

(3 NABCEP Credits)

O&M is one of the fastest growing segments of the PV industry, and for good reasons: preventive maintenance is much less expensive than reactive maintenance. O&M helps maximize system uptime and availability; it is essential to maintain equipment warranties; and potential problems are nipped in the bud. Whether a system owner or maintenance technician, in this course you will learn the tools and tricks of the trade to ensure reliable PV system operation.

The energy storage market is growing rapidly and solar integrators are looking to incorporate energy storage solutions into their system design offerings. Both, battery-based system design and installation is a complex task. During this session presenters with extensive experience designing, installing, and servicing PV systems with energy storage will shed light on best practices and strategies while exploring different battery types.

Trackers are rising in popularity. They offer substantial benefits most notably because they generate more electricity than their stationary counterparts due to increased direct exposure to solar rays. This increase can be as much as 10 to 25% depending on the geographic location. In certain states, some utilities offer Time of Use (TOU) rate plans for solar power, which means the utility will purchase the power generated during the peak time of the day at a higher rate. In this case, it is beneficial to generate a greater amount of electricity during these peak times of the day. Using a tracking system helps maximize the energy gains during these peak time periods. Additionally, past years advancements in technology and reliability in electronics and mechanics have drastically reduced long-term maintenance concerns for tracking systems as well.

To date, numerous projects do no longer just utilize only one single locally available renewable energy form, in order to generate power, but rather a combination of it. Additionally, PV technology applications are more and more designed to be integrated into new industrial sectors e.g. agriculture or to generate power while floating on e.g. lakes and reservoirs. Against this background, what are the technical challenges these projects are facing today? What are the benefits or local integration schemes? The answers to these questions and the showcasing of already operational projects will be featured during this session.

Extreme climate change driven weather events are becoming more common. In 2017, hurricanes devastated the Florida and Houston in the US as well as the US territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Though not a climate change related event, an earthquake in Mexico City devastated its population. Communities hit by disaster need a method of rapidly restoring power and PV/Storage mobile micro-grids are uniquely qualified to fit this role capable of providing power immediately to affected areas. After emergency power is restored, utility scale PV/storage is ready to provide a long term DG solution for communities vulnerable to disaster. This session will showcase the storage and PV technologies already available with case studies presented by installers and developers already working in this crucial field.

Solar Winery and Microgrid TourTime 9:00am–5:30pmMeeting Point West Hall, Lobby 1 Bus boards at 8:45am. Bus will return around 5:30pm

This all-day tour – happening the Friday after Intersolar closes – will offer a unique opportunity to see a truly cutting-edge microgrid (with solar, hydrogen, microturbines, batteries, co-generation, and electronic controls technology) AND sample some Napa area wines!

Local Solar Farm TourTime 9:00am–12:45pmMeeting Point West Hall, Lobby Level I Bus boards around 8:45am. Bus will return around 12:45pm

Visit two local Bay Area solar farms! MCE, California‘s first Community Choice Aggregator (CCA), will lead a tour showcasing two of its recently completed solar projects: MCE Solar One and the Novato Cooley Quarry. While navigating each solar farm, the attendees will learn how each project works, was developed, and benefits the environment and the local economy.

Site 1 – MCE Solar OneUtilizing a remediated brownfield site at the Chevron Richmond Refinery, this 10.5 MW solar farm will generate enough electricity to power up to 3,400 homes per year. The project supported over 340 jobs with a requirement that at least half of the workforce be hired locally.

Site 2 – Novato Cooley QuarryThis one-megawatt solar project generates clean, renewable electricity to serve residents and business owners under MCE‘s Local Sol program. Not everyone is a homeowner, and not every homeowner can install solar panels on their home, but everyone should have access to local solar energy. By participating in MCE‘s Local Sol program one can directly fund a local solar project, promote the growth of the local green economy and ensure their ratepayer dollars foster sustainable energy development in the local community.

Exploratorium Green Building and Museum TourTime 4:30pm–8:00pmMeeting Point West Hall, Lobby 1 Bus boards at 4:15pm. Bus will return around 8:00pm

According to the New York Times, The Exploratorium „remains the most important science museum to have opened since the mid-20th century because of the nature of its exhibits [and] its wide-ranging influence.“ The museum offers a unique, immersive experience and is a premiere San Francisco attraction. When the museum moved to Pier 15 in 2013, they were tasked with turning a historical finger pier into a LEED Platinum building. The new facilities include radiant heating and cooling using a bay water heat exchange system, a rainwater reuse system, and a 1.3mw PV system. On this tour, the museum Facilities Director will walk us through the building‘s green features and show us the mechanical room. After that, the tour attendees will join the „After Dark“ museum crowd and explore the exhibits on their own. „After Dark“ is an adults-only (18+) museum event with drinks and music.

First we will stop at Stone Edge Farm for a tour of their jaw-dropping microgrid project. Stone Edge and its team of engineers from around the world are researching how to be self-sufficient for all their energy needs, including making wine. To get a glimpse of the incredibly important work Stone Edge Farm is doing, check out their “Prezi” presentation

The second stop will be at Cline Cellars, where we will take a tour of their renewable energy and taste delicious wine. Join us for a unique, educational, and relaxing way to end the conference week. This is a tour you won‘t want to miss!
