China is a major trading partner for Australia and much of the Western world, but at home it faces many challenges of all emerging and developing markets, not the least of which is an ageing population that represents a sizeable percentage of its citizenship. In this session a highly regarded academic and one-time world banker provides a detailed overview of China’s Pension Policy and retirement income provision, past present and future.

Islamic or Sharia finance can mean different things to different people. This session puts the issue in perspective with an academic from Malaysia outlining its history, principles and importantly, its growing place in today’s world; an Australian Superannuation fund representative with members working in the Islamic community brings a case study of research and policy making in the Sharia fund space; and a Hong Kong-based fund manager looks at the development path of products in this important sector.
NB: Australia’s Muslim community stands at some 400,000 citizens, a number which is steadily growing.

Buses depart hotel for Shenzhen, PR China
This all day event will include a guided tour of Shenzhen developments in the Pearl River area and a visit to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange where a presentation will be made.
There will be a further presentation from a Shenzhen Development Leader covering pre and post GFC experiences of Shenzhen; the effects of the People’s Republic of China stimulus package, the development of the new economic zone and it’s links to Hong Kong (inclusive of lunch).

Sam Sicilia, Chief Investment Officer, HOSTPLUS will lead a discussion on our visit to Shenzhen and what it means for long term investors.

It will question our levels of responsibility, when as long-term investors and trustees you have a duty to both preserve and maximise returns for members retirement incomes, you have to consider the weight you accord ethical factors in your investment decision-making process.

Patient Long-Term Investing – The essential dos and the avoidable don’ts is an important session that is sure to debunk some myths, spotlight some realities and reflect on some of the more light hearted adventures of investors in Asia’s varied markets. Moderator, respected editor and entrepreneur Tan Lee Hock, will put a forensic focus on the four fund manager panellists as they describe and discuss working examples of long-term investing to help participants understand what is essential they do and what should be avoided.
Topics for discussion will include: property investing; new opportunities in Asia arising from the globalisation of the economy; fund governance – the role of and the impact on, long-term investors; and the emerging opportunities in China.
