Conference Overview: Waste Management is one of the most serious challenges faced by all countries across Middle East. The high rate of populaon growth, urbanizaon, migraon, industrial growth and economic expansion has led to tremendous increase in solid waste genera- on in the region. Interesngly, per capita solid waste generaon in GCC coun- tries is one of the highest worldwide. The gross urban waste generaon from Middle East countries has risen to more than 150 million tons per annum which is posing serious environmen- tal and public health hazards. Oman now has one of the highest rates of waste generaon per capita in the world, around 1.6kg/day. Currently all forms of waste, be it bio degradable or plasc and other hazardous material is being buried into landfills and even the engineered ones in the long run will result in seepage of toxins into the soil, while resources connue depleng. Hence the Government has planned investments of about RO2.5bn over the next ten years. Conference Overview:Waste Management is one of the most serious challenges faced by all countries across Middle East. The high rate of population growth, urbanization, migration, industrial growth and economic expansion has led to tremendous increase in solid waste genera- tion in the region.

Interestingly, per capita solid waste generation in GCC coun- tries is one of the highest worldwide. The gross urban waste generation from Middle East countries has risen to more than 150 million tons per annum which is posing serious environmen- tal and public health hazards.

Oman now has one of the highest rates of waste generation per capita in the world, around 1.6kg/day. Currently all forms of waste, be it bio degradable or plastic and other hazardous material is being buried into landfills and even the engineered ones in the long run will result in seepage of toxins into the soil, while resources continue depleting. Hence the Government has planned investments of about RO2.5bn over the next ten years.

Salman Zafar

A renowned expert in waste management, biomass energy, cleantech and sustainability. He is the Founder of EcoMENA, a Doha-based voluntary organization to promote sustainable development

and create mass environmental awareness in the Middle East. In addition, he is the CEO of BioEnergy Consult, a reputed biomass/biogas consulting firm.

Salman holds Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University (Aligarh, India) and has successfully accomplished a wide range of projects, mainly in the areas of biogas technology, biomass energy, waste-to-energy and solid waste management.

Mehdi Ahmed Jaaffar (Ph.D.)

Originally trained as a TESOL instructor back in 1971, Dr. Mehdi has shifted career and course of interest from teaching to human resources development domain, and subsequently pursued

his post graduate education and training in relevant disciplines. He, then served in the field of environmental education and awareness in the mid nineties of the past century before moving to Nature Conservation in 1996 in his capacity as the Director General for Protected Areas & Nature Conservation. In the summer of 1998 he moved to Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) assuming different roles and responsibilities before concluding his tenure at SQU as the Advisor to the Centre for Environment Studies & Research (CES&R) until the end of 2009.

At the civic front, and at the turn of the new millennium, he-amongst many other like-minded people- lobbied for the initiation of Oman’s first civic environment entity - the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) - as the nation’s pioneering and sole environmental NGO. ESO has emerged over the years as a growing formidable credible civic entity spearheading non-governmental efforts, and acting as a think tank in complimenting the roles of existing public and private environmental agencies in promoting the concept of sustainable development. Dr. Mehdi is a co-founder and ESO’s elected board member and vice president since its official inception in March 2004.

Dr. Reginald Victor

Professor Reginald Victor, the former Dean of Researchand currently at the Department of Biology, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman is an environmental scientist/ecologist. He has a long

academic career spanning four decades with experience in the University systems of India, Canada, Nigeria and the Sultanate of Oman. He has published more than 140 research articles in refereed journals, as books and book chapters, monographs and conference proceedings.
