OFC NETWORKS IN INDIA
Organisers
The conference is being organised by , a company dedicated to providing information on the infrastructure sectors through magazines,
newsletters, reports and conferences. The company publishes (a magazine for service providers and large enterprise customers), (a
magazine devoted to infrastructure policy and finance), (a weekly newsletter), and the report. It also publishes the
.
Mission
The growth in networks based on optical fibre cable (OFC) is likely to pick up speed over the next few years, making India one of the fastest
growing markets in this area.
There are many factors that are driving this growth. They include government initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide as well as telecomoperator plans to meet the growing demand.
The most noteworthy project is the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN), which aims to increase internet usage and improve connectivity in
suburban and rural areas. This project is being promoted by the Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund, which is reportedly ready to commit
Rs 200 billion for the purpose.
The advent of 3G and BWA services would also act as a key growth driver, as wireless telecom operators need to significantly increase the backhaul
capacity and bandwidth. Wireline operators will also continue to increase the penetration of OFC networks in order to provide broadband services.
Wireline operators will also continue to increase the penetration of OFC networks in order to provide broadband services. There is tremendous poten-
tial in the fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) segment, as users are increasingly looking for high-speed broadband, high-definition videos, unlimited any-
where telephony and real-time surveillance.
Another source of demand will be the proposed exclusive OFC network for the defence forces. According to initial estimates, this network would
span 60,000 km and could cost as much as $1.3 billion.
OFC growth will also be driven by the continuing expansion of networks by Indian Railways, Powergrid and GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited).
These organisations not only need the networks for their operations but also see them as new sources of revenues and profits.
There are also a number of state-level e-governance projects that are being funded by the central government (to the tune of Rs 500 billion) and
will have OFC networks as one of their key components. In addition, the mandatory upgradation and digitisation of cable television networks will
require the deployment of OFC networks.
Helping the trend along are technology developments in both optic fibre communications and fibre laying. Technology advances have
significantly reduced the degradation of signals, resulting in the requirement for fewer repeaters. The new plastic optic fibre technology
promises to revolutionise last mile communication networks. Advances in fibre laying technologies are enabling the deployment of OFC
networks in densely populated urban areas.
