I am delighted to welcome you to Language World 2014.For me Language World is the one training event I never miss. It is an annual immersion in reflection and creativity, the re-awakening of enthusiasm through fresh ideas, the constructive debate about pedagogy, policy and practice, and the joyful encounter withlike-minded colleagues. It joins up all the elements that I value most about being a languages teacher. Our theme this year is ‘Joined Up’. This allows us to explore ways we can work together to meet the most important challenges we face as a subject community. Language World is for everyone involved in languages education. Every year we welcome people from across all sectors and from all languages backgrounds. We have put together an exciting programme full of variety and inspiration. We are particularly excited to welcome all new ALL members to Language World. We cannot underestimate the power of the strong, joined up professional voice that ALL represents. Please do make yourselves known to us if it is your first time with us, and relax and enjoy being amongst passionate language professionals from all over the country.

I wish you a great time here in Lancaster at this year’s Language World. Whether it’s your first or your twenty-first time with us, I hope you’ll be excited, inspired and invigorated by your experience and go away with new friends and contacts, new ideas to use tomorrow, and new thoughts to influence your teaching in the longer term. ALL is a subject association and a subject community. We believe that it’s through collaboration, mutual support and exchange of ideas across that community that language teachers can best develop their skills and how language learning can go from strength to strength – ALL joined up! So enjoy the plenaries and presentations, get the most out of the exhibition, network till you drop and don’t forget to come by the ALL stand and say hello! It just remains for me to say a very big thank you for supporting ALL through your membership, by the many different contributions that members make to our work, and by joining up with us for Language World 2014.
