WELCOME TO WROCLAW It is my great pleasure to extend to you my sincerest invitation to participate in the conference on “BIOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL ASPECTS OF THE USE OF SOMATIC STEM CELLS IN REGENERATIVE MEDICINE” taking place in Wroclaw on December 16th-17th, 2013. The progress in this field and a great array of exciting possibilities to employ stem cells in the clinic make many of us interested to participate actively in stem cell research and in many aspects of their clinical translation. For all of this we are organizing the conference. It is our intention to focus on marrow derived stem cells and in particular on (I) description of their developmental hierarchy, (II) regulation of their mobilization and homing and finally (III) the potential mechanisms how they may contribute to regeneration of damaged tissues. The marrow is rich in various progenitors including VSELs, mesenchymal/stromal, endothelial stem cells and the probably best known hematopoietic stem cells. We will be happy to host participants involved in genetic, phenotypic and functional description of stem cells at different levels of commitment to some lineages. Translation of the research to the clinic is very welcome for both physicians and researchers. Therefore we will organize a session and a workshop on the methods used for enrichment of the marrow cell population in stem cells to use them in the clinic directly after isolation or after ex vivo expansion. We are organizing practical workshops on that, including live ongoing internet-based presentation of ex vivo propagation of stromal stem cells. An important part of the conference will consist of clinical reports of the use of some progenitor cells in wound healing, revascularization, and rebuilding of damaged cartilage and bones. In spite of some encouraging data in this area our understanding of the mechanisms involved in these processes

Page 5: Conference onconference2013.dctk.wroc.pl/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Conference-Program-2013.pdfAbstracts book - Molecular biology techniques in clinical immunology and transplantation,

is rather poor. Still we are discussing whether paracrine activity of the implanted cells or their own propensity to expand in vivo plays a key role. The key issue of the translation of stem cell research to their clinical application is the safety of their use. Thus, we will be happy as organizers to have during the conference a panel discussion on practical implementation of the EU directives in the field of regulation of advanced therapy medicinal products in Europe.

I do hope that your active participation in the conference will be relevant and your studies are contributing significantly to the literature with a final outcome as in the verse:

With a finger wrapped in brown paper I am trying to link the past and the future With blue flame And white smoke rises up into rough clouds (Magdalena Lange)

I heartily welcome all of you to Wroclaw.

The winter holiday is just around the corner. Let us enjoy the most charming and festive atmosphere of Christmas time. Happy New Year 2014.

WROCLAW

Wroclaw is situated at a crossroad whose branches link the town with three European capitals: Warsaw, Prague and Berlin. The crossroads location is reflected in the city’s varied history. Founded in the 10th century, Wroclaw has a rich and unique history, reflecting the Polish, Czech and Prussian-German spirit. This crossroads location is reflected by the colour of the town, which you can see looking at buildings, parks and gardens.

This island of churches recalls the time of the Piast Dynasty. The Arch-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is visible from far

away and it is undoubtedly Wroclaw's most precious monument of sacred architecture (note that it is situated in the vicinity of the JP II Hotel). The church has over 1000 years of history, beginning soon after the Emperor Otto III and the Pope Silvestre II established a diocese in Wroclaw. Such an honour was a proof of the city's great importance, as a centre of politics,

economy and culture in the region. A number of turbulent events swept across the town, especially during the Thirty Years' War. Prussia and its successor Germany brought new changes. Wroclaw, under the name Breslau, was the second town of Germany after Berlin and flourished in the fields of art and science. Numerous Nobel Prize winners had their roots in Lower Silesia and they all worked in Wroclaw. Important names strongly associated with the city, like Naisser, Koch, Rokitansky and Hirszfeld, have coloured the map of medical scientific progress.

The German-Polish sense of art and music, as well as perfect and beautiful urbanization of the city, is a heritage by itself, among which classicistic (note the Wroclaw Opera House, which you may visit to enjoy the performance) and modernistic architecture buildings are most worth seeing (please join the City Tour). Not to be missed is the University

with a baroque Leopoldine Saal, facing the Odra River bank. The Odra is a river of over a hundred bridges. They witness the progress in engineering and technical skill. You can walk over the Sand Bridge, built in 1861, or drive via new monumental bridges.

The strengths of Wroclaw rely on the multicultural roots, where German perfectionists merged with the Slavic soul, resulting in the beautiful town bridging the nations which proudly becomes the European Capital of Culture in 2016.

ADAM CZERMAK, NATALIA HALICKA, MONIKA PAWLAS-KRUK, CHAMBER CHOIR 'SENZA RIGORE'

BRONISŁAW KRZYSZTOF

“Bronislaw Krzysztof knows how to translate emotion and energy into the visual with technical proficiency. He has the capability of translating invisible to visible. His surrealistic expression achieved with masterly classical technique makes Bronisław Krzysztof one of the most unique contemporary sculptors." Mashiko New York

"The urge to touch may not be merely a response to perfection of outward form, but , sometimes also a reaction to the attractive power of the life within a person or a created object. The artist strives to produce the illusion of that inner life in his creations. This, I feel, is one of the most important elements in Krzysztof's work. Other contemporary sculptors, including Anthony Gormley and David Mach, also deal with the human figure in their different ways, but they rarely penetrate so far below the surface." Huon Mallalieu British Museum, London

CHAMBER CHOIR 'SENZA RIGORE' The Chamber Choir ‘Senza Rigore’ of the Academy of Music in Wroclaw was formed in October 2000. The ensemble gathers the Academy’s students and graduates who are particularly keen on singing in a choir. Its name, proposed by one of its members, is to emphasize the voluntary nature of its membership, and above all the fact that it operates outside the obligatory curriculum. Its founder, art director and choirmaster is dr hab. Jolanta Szybalska-Matczak, a graduate from the Karol Lipinski Academy of Music in Wroclaw, who studied under Prof. Zofia Urbanyi-Krasnodębska and also completed the Post-Graduate Choirmaster Programme of Study at Bydgoszcz.

The intensive work of the choir members, who share a common passion, quickly led to a debut at the 27th Miner’s Day Festival of Academy Choirs in Wroclaw in December 2000. Since then the Chamber Choir ‘Senza Rigore’ has represented the Academy of Music in Wroclaw at many prestigious national and international concerts and festivals, including: The International Organ Music Festival ‘Cantus Organi’ at Wołów, The Wieczory Tumskie (Evenings in Cathedral Island) Festival in Wroclaw, The Choir Meetings in Gliwice, The Chamber Music Festival ‘Ave Crux’ at Czernica Wroclawska, The 15th May with Old Music Festival in Wroclaw, The 2006 Transnaturale Festival at Schloss Uhyst in Germany, The 21st Organ Conversatorium in Legnica, The International Choir Festival in Hradec Králové and The 3rd International Choir Conducting Tournament ‘Towards Polyphony’ at the Academy of Music in Wroclaw. The choir has also performed at cyclical concerts held at the Academies of Music in Warsaw (‘Interpretations of Old Music’), Bydgoszcz (‘Music on Tuesday’) and Wroclaw (‘The Wroclaw School of Choirmasters’), as well as in Ostrava and in Dresden’s Cathedral.

18

In 2004 the choir took part in the making of a recording to celebrate the 125th anniversary of granting the title ofdoctor honoris causa of Wroclaw University to Johannes Brahms, performing, together with organist Piotr Rojek, the composer’s Psalm 23 op. 27 for Choir and Organ. The Chamber Choir ‘Senza Rigore’ has also participated in various competitions, winning numerous awards and distinctions (the last time the Gold Medal at the Musica Religiosa Festival in Olomouc in 2009). The long list of its trophies attests to the commitment and excellent vocal skills of its members. Each of them, despite their tight schedules, devotes a lot of effort and time to the choir. ‘Senza Rigore’ is a place for enthusiasts, who pursue in it their passion for collective singing. The fact that the passion translates into competition successes, which brings credit to the Academy, is a source of genuine satisfaction to the choir members and its conductress.
