12 13Welcome
ACTUATOR 2012 is the 13th in a series of biennial ACTUATOR events aimed at bringing together leading experts and practitioners from all over the world in the field of new actuators.
When ACTUATOR started in 1988 it offered a new forum to a couple of non-conventional actuator technologies, most of them being far away from any commercial application at that time. In the meantime some of these technolo-gies have achieved their technical breakthrough with series products in industrial and consumer goods. No doubt, smart materials in combination with micro technologies proved their potential for a great leap in the miniaturisation and the performance of actuators and drives.
Since its start ACTUATOR has always been an event focussing on the confer-ence part close to science with an accompanying exhibition. The conference is aimed at giving a comprehensive overview of the international state of research and development in the area of new actuators, and presenting current developments, products and services in the accompanying exhibition. In 2010 there were 435 participants from more than 30 countries. And ACTUATOR is really international: more than 50 per cent of the conference delegates as well as of the contributions come from abroad. The fact that about 40 per cent of delegates are from companies may be interpreted as a clear indicator that the event’s topics have always been significant for researchers and managers from industry on the other hand.
The response to the current Call for Papers was about 10 per cent lower than in 2010. In total 203 conference contributions, 120 oral presentations and 83 posters, will be portraying the state of the art and indicating future trends. One of the main reasons for the decreased number of contributions is closely related to last time’s success story: The overwhelming interest in Polymer actuators resulted in the spin-off of a separate European event on this topic. Despite a number of efforts we failed to keep them included. Nevertheless, we are proud to present a “Polymer Actuator” session being at least half as strong as last time anyway. In addition, based on the experience of 2010, we set-up the two additional sessions “Actuator Control” and “Tactile / Haptic Applica-tions” on a regular base. A very warm welcome to the contributors and the chairmen in charge of these sessions!
Including all reviews, a 2012 conference participant has the chance to listen up to 51 well selected oral contributions. All others including the posters will be properly documented in the proceedings. We hope that the preference conflicts have been minimised by a well-selected placement of the sessions in the general schedule.
The Programme Committee the exhibitors and the organiser would be pleased to welcome you to the 13th International Conference on New Actuators and the 7th International Exhibition on Smart Actuators and Drive Systems in June 2012.
Looking forward to meeting you in Bremen
