Materials and Finishes

Galvanised CoatingsUnprotected iron and steel will usually rust rapidly when

exposed to moisture and air. Zinc coatings prevent this

primarily by acting as a tough barrier between these metals

and the environment. Even if there is minor damage to the

galvanised coating then sacrificial erosion of the zinc will

continue to inhibit corrosion.

Rates of erosion of galavanised coatings reflect a number of

factors primarily the presence of moisture and atmospheric

pollutants such as sulphur dioxide (SO2). In warm dry

conditions loss of zinc may be less than 0.1 micron a year

but in coastal, marine or polluted environments this rises

Hot dip galvanising after manufacture involves immersing

the article in molten zinc after all production processes,

stored in warm dry conditions, preferably under cover. It

is important to prevent freshly galvanised steel becoming

wet, particularly if air is not free to circulate, since these

conditions lead to formation of a white powdery deposit

know as wet storage stain or white rust. Should this occur

the deposits can easily be removed by mild abrasion. The

reduction in the zinc coating thickness is rarely significant

and can be easily checked with an electronic thickness

gauge to confirm that the anticipated maintenance free

period remains adequate.

Standards

BS 4568 : Part 1 and Part 2 : 1970These national standards cover the supply of metric product including the most popular 20mm, 25mm and 32mm sizes and remain the best source of detailed dimensional information on these products. Part 2 includes ‘standards sheets’ which cover the main product groups. BS EN 50086 SeriesThis ‘family’ of European standards was drawn up to cover conduit systems and was ultimately intended to replace national standards. They employ defined tests to cover measurement of parameters such as resistance to compression and impact strength with graded classifications which allow the standard to cover both metal products and plastic equivalents. It should be noted that many plastic equivalents to metal conduit systems are less strong, may be subject to more restricted temperature installation

typically exceed the performance required to meet the most stringent mechanical and strength tests. Resistance to corrosion tests remain virtually unchanged from those included in BS 4568.

BS EN 61386 SeriesThis family of standards is very similar to and is now replacing the BS EN 50086 series. They are intended to cover ‘Conduit Systems for Cable Management’ and their content is identical with the International standard IEC 61386.
