Principals Report

It is my pleasure to announce the leadership team for 2016. They are: School Captains: Will Press & Emma Kennedy, School Prefects: Eliza Packham, Alynta McKellar and Zac Aspinall. As the most significant student leaders in the school, they will be expected to be ambassadors who embody the school values. They must be approachable, reliable and trustworthy with high expectations of themselves and others. They will be expected to take an active role in all aspects of the school community and work with others to achieve the best possible outcomes. I would like to thank the Year 11 Year Advisor Miss Norton for her organisation of the process and coordination of the panel. To the other panel members Mrs Keen P & C representative, current Boys School Captain Will Coleman and SRC representative Brianna Richards; your professionalism and attention to detail throughout the process was excellent. We all look forward to working with our leadership team in 2017. Since the last newsletter the annual Condobolin Show has come and gone and again it was great to see such a positive contribution from our staff and students. Whether it was showing cattle, exhibiting art and craft or setting up a display, staff and students were involved in many and varied ways to make the show a successful event. Special mention goes to Mrs Kuhn for setting up such a wonderful display featuring our school. Recently we held a very successful Year 6 Parent/Caregiver information evening in the school high shelter. Thank you to all those parents, students and staff who attended. This was a great opportunity to showcase our school and answer a variety of questions. If you were unable to attend or would like more information do not hesitate to contact the school to meet with a staff member, myself or even take a tour of the school. During week 7 we acknowledged the hard work done by the School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS) as part of SASS Recognition Week. Every day of the school year SAS staff face new challenges in the running of our public schools and the provision of the quality

education. SAS staff are a dedicated group of professional workers who are often overlooked in the school setting. Recognition Week gives the whole school the opportunity to demonstrate to SAS staff that they are valued members of the school community. Please individually take the time to thank them for the high level of dedication they give to their work. Our dedicated SAS staff are: Business Manager - Tracey Stubberfield, Aboriginal Education Officer – Sheree Brandy, General Assistant – Trevor Thorpe, Farm Assistant – Peter Speers, Office Staff – Shirley Fettell, Kath Cowled, Sonya Keeley, Leanne Kuhn and Emma Judd, School Learning Support Officers – Matt Kendall, Virginia Griffiths, Caroline Gross, Alison Harland, Colleen O’Brien, Janine Richards and Michelle Brown. Year 12 students are quickly coming to the end of their schooling. We have three important events to prepare for; the LAP Graduation at Lake Cargelligo on Wednesday 14th September, the School Graduation on the 17th September followed by the Graduation Dinner in the evening at the RSL club. The year 12 students have sat their trial exams, have received feedback and are busily preparing for their HSC exams which take place at the beginning of Term 4. Final preparations are in place for the schools China Tour, where Miss Norton and I will be taking 11 very eager students on a two week immersion into Chinese culture and history. I am very excited about this excursion, and the planned cultural activities. I wish the tour group safe and happy travels. This is a wonderful opportunity for our staff and students and will provide lifelong memories for all of the participants. As we come to the end of another busy term, can I thank all the staff, students and community for their ongoing support and a restful break. Staff and students return to school on Monday 10th October. Jeff Ward Principal

Show Team Wrap for 2016:

Condobolin Show The students attended the local show and exhibited a team of 5 cattle, including Royalla Annesley, Rosedale Ruby, Rosedale Butterscotch, Lollipop and Weemeellah Mr Watermelon. Overall it was a highly successful day with many students placing in the parading competition and many of our cattle achieving ribbons. The highlight of the day was Royalla Annesley being awarded Supreme female exhibit on the day. National All Breeds Heifer Show (Dubbo) A team of 6 animals and 5 students attending the Heifer Show at Dubbo held from the 1st to the 4th of September. Students braved some very wet and cold conditions to exhibit their stock. On the Friday students participated in a range of classes and demonstrations to further their knowledge about the beef industry. Friday afternoon saw the judging of the commercial heifer section, with a big congratulations to Linzi Whiley for preparing and leading Lollipop who was awarded Reserve Champion Commercial Heifer. This was followed by a very busy Saturday where students participated in junior judging prior. Congratulations to McKayla for proceeding to the oral section of the junior judging. Following this was the heifer classes where students had to prepare and exhibit their animals to be judged in comparison with heifers of the same age. Royalla Annesley placed 2nd in her class. Congratulations to Zane Rodgers for preparing and leading Rosedale Butterscotch to receive a 4th place. Unfortunately our other heifers were outclassed on the day. Sunday was the paraders competition with students again entering the ring and being judged on their ability to prepare and exhibit their animals. By this stage the tough conditions were taking their toll on the students, with only one student managing to get a placing. Congratulations Linzi on your 4th place.

The highlight of the weekend occurred on Saturday afternoon when I was approached by a teacher from another school. This teacher commended our kids on their manners, behaviour and overall helpfulness. So a massive congratulations to all the kids involved, Felicity, Linzi, Hamish, McKayla and Zane. You were all amazing! A big thank you to the O’Halloran family for transporting our stock to Dubbo and allowing the students to exhibit Lilydale Penny and Lilydale Mabel. West Wyalong Show Our last day show of the season was held on Wednesday 7th September. A small team of 6 students travelled across and helped exhibit our group of 4 cattle. Royalla Annesley received a first place, then went on to receive reserve junior champion. Rosedale Butterscotch received a first place and Rosedale Ruby received a second place. Mr Watermelon received a second place. Parading classes were held with students divided into their respective age and experience groups. Congratulations Amelia Dowling on a 2nd place, McKayla Stanley on Champion Parader, and Zane Rodgers on a 3rd place. Junior Judging was held with McKayla Stanley again stepping up and receiving a Champion ribbon for her judging. Congratulations to all on the day for their behaviour, manners and willingness to help out. (We won’t mention Mrs Hughes getting the bus bogged!!!) Thanks to all the Show Team and helpers.

This term in Food Technology, students are investigating product development. They have been assigned to create a new pie, sweet or savoury it doesn’t matter! Students are taking their ideas through from an idea, to testing, to costing, packaging and marketing. They have surveyed people to ascertain the likes and dislikes of their peers and evaluated possible ideas we cook in class. This project is a self directed project and students are working well, planning their own work, problem solving and working well in teams.

There have been some amazing ideas tested so far: Cherry Ripe pie, Mars Bar pie, Meat Lovers pie, Oreo pie, Tic Tac pie and Deconstructed Quiche pies. The project is to be finished at the end of October where students will submit their website where they have recorded their research and evaluations and cook their final pie ready for the tasting. I am looking forward to the tasting and appraisal of each pie. We certainly have some budding product developers!

CONDOBOLIN HIGH

SCHOOL

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 25th October 5.30pm School Library All Welcome to Attend

On Wednesday 7th September a small group of enthusiastic Agriculture students headed off to Junee to learn more about careers in the agriculture industry. There were 60 presenters and careers paths which students had the choice of attending, with each student attending 6 workshops on the day. In our small group we managed to attend a lot of different workshops with our top picks being: Grain Marketing - learning about how supply and demand affect gran prices and having a turn at being a grain buyer and speculating on the market. Agricultural Business Manager – learning how to assess pasture growth and availability so you can match it with stock needs and decision making about supplementary feeding.

Vet Nurse – learning how to find the heart beat/rates of animals, sex rabbits and prepare animals for surgery Sheep and Wool consultant – learning about assessing wool quality looking at staple strength, colour and brightness. Digital Agriculture – learning about the process of designing apps, looking at their use in the paddocks and looking at the future of agriculture with robotic tractors and unmanned machines. Cattle Breeding Specialist - looking at semen samples for quantity, deformities and motility before inseminating cattle using AI. All the students had a great day, made new friends and spent all their money at the slowest McDonalds in NSW, as well as teaching Mrs Thomas lots of new songs!

Term 3 Assessment Tasks

There have been a number of changes in terms of assessments at Condobolin High School in 2016. Part of my role as assessment coordinator has been to rewrite the assessment policy and implement a number of changes across the school. Students have all been issued with Assessment Booklets; these booklets are also available on the Condobolin High School Website, for each Year Group. These booklets are an important document for every child. They outline the assessment requirements for each subject across every year, outline the procedures to follow in terms of applying for an extension or misadventure and include a copy of the Board of Studies key terms. Some important information for parents and students:

Each assessment task requires a minimum of two weeks’ notice to be given. Students are expected to sign a receipt of task at the time the task is issued. If a student is away from school it is their responsibility to seek out any missed assessments or classwork.

No more than TWO assessment tasks should be due in each week for any year group. Please contact myself at school if this is not the case for your child.

For any change of date of assessment your child should receive a notification in writing advising of the new date.

All submitted assessments and quizzes are to be returned within two weeks. Again please feel free to contact myself if this is not occurring, and the assessment committee will be able to investigate the issue.

If your child cannot attend school on the day of an assessment, or has been unable to complete an assessment due to reasons including – Sickness, Carers Responsibilities, Illness in the family, they must apply for either an Extension (If before the due date) or Misadventure. They need to collect these forms from Head Teachers and return with appropriate documentation to myself for processing.

We are hoping that by implementing new policies and procedures, that assessments at Condobolin High School, become more streamlined and meaningful for our students. Miss Melissa Rees Assessment Coordinator
