OBJECTIVES
To promote a basic awareness of Arts and Culture as a learning area based on the entertainment value. To create opportunities for every single pupil to participate and develop the various art disciplines. To showcase talented learners.
GENERAL RULES AND GUIDELINES
A. Entries
A separate entry form should be completed for each individual participant.
Please adhere to copyright.
Own Choice: Copy of text to be handed to the convener.
Entry fees are not refundable.
The correct amount must be paid for all entries. No entries will be processed if the entry fees
are outstanding.
Participants are limited to one entry per item.
Individual Entries: due to the uncertainty of these unprecedented times and that we may still be
experiencing varying levels of lockdown for a while to come, we have decided to keep Concours
D’Arts Digital! This means that all performances for all genres and items will now be submitted
as a media file (image or audio/video in MP4 format). The date that the video needs to be
submitted by will be the scheduled date for the item you registered for. Instead of performing on
the date, you will upload your media file to the Concours web portal. The schedule of dates for
each item will be emailed to you after your registration. Diarise these dates as they represent the
deadline for when the video needs to be uploaded. To upload your video performance, you will
log into the Concours web portal (same as the link above). Once logged in, you will be able to view
the list of items you have registered for. Then you will click on the upload link and browse for the
media file to upload. Once the file has been uploaded successfully you will then be prompted to
submit for marking.
If you require support related to the Concours portal, direct your support request to:

General Rules:
Time limits
Participants must adhere to the time limits that are provided for each particular item. The adjudicator may
disqualify a performance should a performance exceed the allocated time limit.
Video Submissions All performances for all genres and items must be submitted as a media file (audio/video in MP4 format). The date that the video must be submitted by will be the scheduled date for the item you registered for. Instead of performing on the date, you will upload your media file to the Concours web portal. The schedule of dates for each item will be emailed to you after your registration. Diarise these dates as they represent the deadline for when the video needs to be uploaded. To upload your video performance, you will log into the Concours web portal https://online.myrhythm.io/Events/Concours. Once logged in, you will be able to view the list of items you have registered for. Then you will click on the upload link and browse for the media file to upload. Once the file has been uploaded successfully you will then be prompted to submit for marking. If you require support related to the Concours portal, direct your support request to: [email protected]
Performances are meant to be filmed specifically for Concours D’Arts. Pre-recorded videos of performances for
other events may not be submitted and will be disqualified. We would like for there to be parity for all participants. It needs to be a live stand-alone, landscape camera shot with no editing – so essentially a live recording. No edited videos will be accepted, and edited videos will be disqualified. You may film in a studio or a stage if you have one available. If your country is in lockdown find a spot that would be most suitable for your performance, a garage, the lawn in your garden, a patio or somewhere equally suitable and just do your best. The adjudicators are aware of the limitations of not being in a studio or on a stage.
Entries
Participants are allowed to enter different items within a particular category, e.g., puppetry, prescribed poem
and prose creative writing. However, participants may not enter multiple entries in the same item.
Own Choice
If a participant is entering for an ‘Own Choice’ item, a copy of the text must be supplied to the adjudicator.
Appropriateness
Since this is a school event, swearing is not permissible and the participant needs to be aware of the
appropriateness of the piece being performed.

Time limits Participants must adhere to the time limits that are provided for each particular item. The adjudicator may disqualify a performance should a performance exceed the allocated time limit.

Nutty Nursery Rhymes
‘Jump over the moon?’ the cow declared, ‘With a dish and a spoon. Not me. I need a suit and a rocket ship And filmed by the BBC. ‘I want a roomy capsule stall For when I blast away, And an astronaut as a dairymaid And a bale of meadow hay.’ She gave a twitch of her lazy rump, ‘Space travel takes up time. I certainly don’t intend to jump For a mad old nursery rhyme.’ Max Fatchen
THE GREEN HEDGEHOG
My teacher had a hedgehog. It was green and looked quite ill. Its spines were thin and pale And it sat completely still. Its eyes were closed so tightly, I knew it couldn’t see. It seemed to have just lumps and bumps Where its feet should be. My teacher took it to the vet, Afraid it might be dead; The vet took just one look at it And this is what they said: “This sad and sorry article Has nothing to attract us. I’m sorry to inform you That your hedgehog is … a cactus!” Celia Warren
My Elephant thinks I’m Wonderful
My elephant thinks I’m wonderful. My elephant thinks I’m cool. My elephant hangs around with me and follows me into school. My elephant likes the way I look. He thinks that I’m fun and smart. He thinks that I’m kind and generous and have a terrific heart. My elephant thinks I’m brave and bold. He’s proud of my strength and guts. But mostly he likes the way I smell. My elephant thinks I’m nuts. Kenn Nesbitt
Sticky Licky
In the summer, When it’s sunny Eating ice-cream Can be funny.
Ice-cream melts And drips so fast It’s quite hard To make it last.
It’s so lovely, Sweet and licky, But when it drips, You get sticky.
I get ice-cream On my clothes, In my hair And up my nose.
My dad says I should eat less; Ice-cream plus me Equals mess! Tony Bradman

I don’t know who did it. I don’t know if my brother did it. I don’t know if my dog did it. I don’t know if some big hairy monster did it. I don’t know if a burglar snuck in and did it. I don’t know if a ghost came back to life and did it. I don’t know if some huge yucky wad of slime oozed in through the window and did it. All I know is Absolutely ...... Positively ....... One hundred percent for sure ..... I DID NOT DO IT!!! So leave me alone! NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS ABOUT ME AND JONATHAN’S SISTER I never kissed her. Unknown
MUM FOR A DAY
Mum’s ill in bed today So I said I’d do the housework And look after things. She told me it was really hard But I said it would be dead easy. So ....... I hovered up the sink Dusted the cat Cooked my dad’s shoes Washed the carpet in the dishwasher Fed all the ornaments and pictures Polished the steak and kidney pudding and chips Ironed all the letters and parcels Posted all the shirts and knickers And last of all .... I hung the budgie out on the washing line to dry. It took me all day But I got everything finished And I was really tired. I’m glad Mum isn’t ill every day And do you know what? So is the budgie. Choosing Some Suitable Pets
Big bugs and fat slugs And blood-sucking leeches; Things that come wriggling From plump plums and peaches; Growlers and howlers And screamers and screechers; Vile-bodied vermin With foulest of features; rubbery, blubbery deep-water species of sea-beasts whose bodies get washed up on beaches; appalling things crawling from damp nooks and niches; slimy things climbing where light never reaches; hair-nits and hornets; the grubs of such creatures … It’s hard to choose which pets To get for your teachers! Nick Toczek
SPAGHETTI
Spaghetti, spaghetti, all over the place Up to my elbows – up to my face, Over the carpet and under the chairs, Into the hammock and wound round the chairs, Filling the bathtub and covering the desk, Making a sofa a mad mushy mess. The party is ruined, I’m terribly worried, The guests have all left (unless they’re all burie). I told them, “Bring presents.” I said, “Throw confetti.” I guess they heard wrong Cause they all threw spaghetti. Shell Silverstein

The World’s Fastest Bicycle
My bicycle’s the fastest
that the world has ever seen;
It has supersonic engines
and a flame-retardant sheen.
My bicycle will travel
A gazillion miles an hour –
It has rockets on the handlebars
For supplemental power.
The pedals both are jet-propelled
To help you pedal faster,
And the shifter is equipped
with an electric turbo-blaster.
The fender has a parachute
In case you need to brake.
Yes, my bike is undeniably
The fastest one they make.
My bicycle’s incredible!
I love the way it feels,
An I’ll like it even more
When Dad removes the training wheels.

Guess What Dad Does
When I went to junior school My friends asked what Dad did. I did not dare tell them. So I had to ad lib. My father’s not a fireman. He’s not a bus conductor. He’s not a stuntman in the film Or a P.E. instructor. Yes he is quite rich. And no, he’s not a banker. He doesn’t own a gold mine Or an oil tanker. I help him with his job. And stay up late at night. Dad works in the shadows And does not like the light. I like his job best of all And get quite excited When we enter people’s homes Totally uninvited. Brian Patten

Inside Sir’s Matchbox
Our teacher’s pet Lives in a nest of pencil-shavings Inside a matchbox Which he keeps In the top drawer of his desk. It’s so tiny, he says, You need a microscope to see it. When we asked him what it ate, He grinned and said, “Nail clippings and strands of human hair – Especially children’s”. Once on Open Day, He put it out on the display table, But we weren’t allowed to open the box Because it’s allergic to light.
Our teacher says his pet’s unique. “Isn’t it lonely?” we asked. “Not with you lot around,” he said.
Once, there was an awful commotion When it escaped While he was opening the box To check if it was all right. But he managed to catch it Before it got off his desk.
Since then, he hasn’t taken it out so much. He says he thinks it’s hibernating at present – Or it could be pregnant. If it is, he says There’ll be enough babies For us all to have one. John Foster
When Sarah Surfs the Internet
When Sarah surfs the Internet She starts by checking mail. She answers all her messages From friends in great detail.
She plays a game, or maybe two, An watches a cartoon, Then chats with kids in places Like Rwanda and Rangoon.
She reads about her favourite bands. She buys an MP3. She downloads movie trailers And she looks for stuff for free.
She reads about celebrities And dreams of wealth and fame, Then watches music videos And plays another game.
If you should say, “Your time is up. I need to use the Net,” She always whines, “I haven’t got My homework finished yet!” Kenn Nesbitt
DOCTOR
I went to the doctor, yes, I went to him And I said – “Doctor, Doctor, It’s Roads, “I said. “Roads?” he says. “Roads,” I said. “No such thing,” he says. “I’ve got Roads, Doctor, Very bad Roads. I’ve got long distance lorryworry One way only lorrywory. They say: No U-turns Ahead. I know I turned my head, But I saw two zebras crossing And a bus eating traffic jam. I can hear Unhappy new gears. When traffic’s light At traffic lights I see red Amber Red and amber Red Already I wish I was a Windscreen wiper. Once I washed windscreens Now I watch wipers. What shall I do? I’ve got Roads, Very bad Roads, Doctor. What shall I do?” So he looked at me and said: “I don’t know what I know But I’ve got just the stink for you.” And he squeezed me on the Underground And handed me the tube.

ODE TO A JELLY TOT
Hail, O Jelly Tot! Most wonderful of all. When you are near I have no fear As you are the answer to everything. Your elegant figure is so divine And your sugary coating Fills my mouth with ambrosial flavours. Without your presence My stomach would be empty. Most marvelous jelly tot - Never shall I touch another toffee, Never shall I chew another fudge, Never shall I chomp another chocolate, Never shall I gulp another gobstopper, Never shall I absorb another aniseed ball, Never shall I bobble another piece of gum, Never shall I crunch another candy stick, And never shall I munch another Mars bar. Never shall I swallow another inferior sweet - Without you my life wouldn’t be complete. Kathryn Smale
WARNING
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick flowers in other people’s gardens And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go Or only bread and pickle for a week And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes that keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children. We will have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

Ode to a stone
Oh stone, I adore you in every way. I admire the way you trip me up As I walk down the path; I appreciate the way You never make sudden moves or butt in, You are my prize possession, I value you greatly, I worship the superb scratch across your back. Oh chip off the old block! I am truly grateful That you have loved me for so many years. Behold the marvelous mud stain across you side. I’m sure if I used you I could kill two birds; If I lost you I would leave no stone unturned until I found you. I envy your ability To sleep through terrible storms at night. Oh stone, you give me sheer delight. Alex Burdett
Zoom Lens At first glance it is A big black metal worm, Snaking from one end of the horizon to the other, Sucking in and spewing out the silver rails. As I get nearer It turns into a roaring, raging, dark streak, Spitting out foul, grey mouthfuls of bitter smoke. Nearer still And I can feel the earth quiver. A warm gust of air and it is here, Rushing, screeching, screaming Past my nose. A live earthquake passes me by, Carriage upon carriage shoots through the tunnel. The never-ending train has finally gone, Leaving me completely deaf And with the taste of smoke in my mouth. Nicholas Bieber

The Photograph Who ripped the photograph of my mother Standing with her diploma? We all denied it. She was wearing her graduation gown With sleeves that looked like wings. Two other photographs were torn; One of my father and sister, They were sitting in a café drinking tea, And one of me. I was wearing my mother’s graduation gown – I looked like a comedian. They had been ripped up like rubbish no-one cared for. I often sit and wonder who would want to tear them, It sometimes sends a chill up my spine. One of all the family was lying in pieces. They were torn at night. We found them on the table in the morning. James Souter

Letter of Complaint Dear Sir/Madam I am writing to complain about BOREDOM, The wonder product you sent me. It looked like a good idea on the picture But nowhere in the ad. did it say What trouble it would bring. The words above the drawing told me That I’d never have to work again. This was very misleading. True enough, I haven’t worked since I got it, But I thought it meant instant prosperity. The side effects are definitely undesirable, i.e. insomnia, tedium, etc. I took it on holiday And it completely spoiled my time on the beach. I was not able to do anything As my mind would not concentrate on making decisions. So, for the above reasons, I would like to cancel my order For “Unlimited BOREDOM”. I hope that as I have replied promptly You will refund my money. In the meantime I am forced To bear with the remaining quantity. Yours very sluggishly,

The World Reunion Ladies and Gentlemen, We are gathered here today For me to say About our plan To run away. Ladies and Gentlemen, We have come here to leave And not to grieve For dead friends, Don’t deceive. Ladies and Gentlemen, You’ll meet some you don’t know, Friendships will grow, Some will not, A counterblow. We must forget our past, Lock it in an iron cast In our mind. We will have no outcast, We will not be classed Above others. We will have food to eat, Our hearts will go at a steady beat In our chests, And anyone who tries to cheat Or force others into defeat Is banished. We will be in the unknown, But we will not be alone Where we are, And when lost we will be shown To a place of our own To rest. Nicholas Midgley

The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost

“MENEER SE SLIMSTE KIND”
“Juffrou, ek belowe, ek sal nie weer – Volgende keer sing ek, niemand sal my keer…. Al klink dit dan soos…soos…donderweer!”

WOLK-RY ‘n Warrelwind skep my op in die lug En los my op ‘n wolk se rug. Daar seil ek, en die mense onder staan hulle boognek en verwonder. Sonnet by oupa se portret

to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic). Also, four entries will make you eligible to be a Section Winner
if your points are high enough.
3. Can I enter the same item with the same code twice?
No, you may ONLY enter a particular item ONCE. You may not enter twice for the same item with the same
item code.

Concours D’Arts?
No, each student must pay online directly to Concours D’Arts before their entry can be processed.
10. Are the performances expected to be recorded whilst in lockdown or are we able to submit work videoed before lockdown? For example, we had a show before lockdown and have footage of this, is this able to be entered?
No, performances are meant to be filmed specifically for Concours D’Arts. Pre-recorded videos of performances may not be submitted and will be disqualified. We would like for there to be parity for all participants.
11. Does the video of a performance need to be shot as a stand-alone camera shot or can an edited video
be submitted?
Yes, it needs to be a live stand-alone, landscape camera shot with no editing – so essentially a live recording. No edited videos will be accepted, and edited videos will be disqualified.
12. Can a performance be any length?
63
No, there are very specific durations provided in the prospectus, which can be found on the home page of the Concours D’Arts website, for every performance. These need to be strictly adhered to. Should a performance exceed this prescribed time limit, the performance will be disqualified.
13. Can a visual artwork, like a sculpture, be any size?
No, even though submissions are going to be virtual, the sizes specified in the Visual Art Section of the
prospectus which can be found on the home page of the Concours D’Arts website must be adhered to.

14. If some students want to perform a studio set eisteddfod dance which was supposed to be performed
at another eisteddfod, but which has now been cancelled, would it be permitted for the six students to
perform the same dance but enter the dance individually and separately?
Yes, it would be totally fine for the six students to individually enter the same dance.
15. Please can you clarify the rules regarding dance videos. If it turns out that we are still in lock down and
these dances need to be done at home, are there any guidelines regarding this? Obviously, nobody has
a large clear space to use. So, will there be any restrictions, can we use a garden, patio etc. Also, a
backdrop and sound will be tricky.
Do not worry about backdrops, lighting etc. All dancers are in the same predicament. Find a spot that would be most suitable for your performance, a garage, the lawn in your garden, a patio or somewhere equally suitable and just do your best. The adjudicators are dancers too and are aware of the limitations of not being in a studio or on a stage.
16. If I am going to do a ballet pointe solo, it will be limited/restricted by me being at home. What shall I do?
Do it on the lawn without pointe shoes and find the most suitable alternative to replicate the dance without creating any possible risk for injury, or if your country is not on lockdown you can film in a studio or on a stage if you have one available.
17. Can an artwork be a copy of someone else’s work?
No, participants may not plagiarise in any way. Copying imagery from anywhere including all social media
sites and/or the internet is not permissible. It must be the entrant's own original artwork and concept, or
it will be disqualified. Entrants may also not accept help from anybody in the creating of their artworks.
Participants will be required to sign a Pledge of Honour indicating that they have read and understood the
above conditions and have complied with these conditions.
18. Due to lockdown, I have been sending piano accompaniments to my students and they have been singing to these during their lessons. I realize backing tracks are strictly not allowed for the eisteddfod, but due to my not being able to accompany them at the piano (lagging online) would they be allowed the piano accompaniment as a backtrack this time for the eisteddfod.
Yes, they will be allowed to have a piano accompaniment as a backtrack for the eisteddfod.
19. Would you kindly advise if there are specific books for the prepared reading or do, we choose our own book?
The participant chooses their own text for these items.
20. Is there more detail as to the guidelines and requirements etc. for Product Design for Fashion/Costume Design. I assume there is some type of scope.
Fashion/Costume Design is totally open-ended. The participant can choose whatever they would like to do. It is the idea behind the design that is the most important.

Due these very unusual times, and with participants from all over the world from different countries all at different stages of lockdown, we have decided that in order to make the competition as fair as possible we have made the following prescriptions with regard to video submissions:
Performances should be recorded as ‘live’ performances for this event, and must be performed in school uniforms, except dance and where otherwise indicated in the prospectus, for example, dramatic monologues etc.
Participants may not submit pre-recorded performances from prior events, exams, concerts or rehearsals and the performance should be unique and specific to Concours D’Arts.
All submissions need to be one continuous take, from beginning to end. No cuts, editing, filters, underscoring, postproduction or effects may be added.
Non-compliance with these stipulations will result in disqualification.
For Dance and Music, accompaniment/ backtracks specified in the prospectus are allowed.

26. How do I record my video performance?
All submissions need to be recorded in LANDSCAPE format, please.
All performances for all genres and items must be submitted as a media file (audio/video in MP4 format), except for some Visual Art items.
