INTRODUCTION On November 30 th 2015, 23 countries and the European Union launched Mission Innovation (MI), an effort to significantly hasten clean energy innovation. This workshop will focus on laying the ground work for the research and development plan of Priority Area #4 (Predictive Maintenance and Control Optimization), which is carried out within the context of Innovation Challenge #7 (Affordable Heating and Cooling), one of the challenges charted in MI. Faulty equipment and suboptimal control strategies in buildings result in increased energy use in buildings, higher electric peaks and higher GHG emissions. Priority area #4 will address these issues by leveraging Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) capabilities and applying AI techniques to large datasets to anticipate problems in building systems and introduce a proactive approach to building operation. Links to related cross-cutting activities, such as the development of a Comfort and Climate Box (activity CC4 in IC#7) and the relationship of buildings with the electric grid (Smart Grid, IC#1) will be explored.
