From the Pastor’s Pen – New Year? New Day!

At the beginning of a new year, we seem to get excited about the possibilities and challenges of the year ahead of us. We make resolutions, many of which tend to fade away as days turn into weeks and weeks into months. What I suggest for this new year’s resolution is to make every new day a new beginning, a new-year’s day. Let me remind you of Martin Luther’s suggestion for folding each day in prayer. This will help keep all the other issues and challenges before you in proper perspective. These are his directions for how the head of the household should teach his household to pray morning and evening.

“In the morning when you get up, make the sign of the holy cross and say:

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Then, kneeling or standing, repeat the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. If you

choose you may also say this little prayer: I thank you, my heavenly Father,

through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from

all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from

sin and every evil that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your

hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy

angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Then go joyfully to your work, singing a hymn, like that of the Ten Commandments, or whatever your devotion may suggest. In the evening when you go to bed, make the sign of the holy cross and say:

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Then, kneeling or standing, repeat the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. If you

choose, you may also say this little prayer: I thank you my heavenly Father,

through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this

day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done

wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend

myself, my body and soul and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me that

the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Then go to sleep at once and in good cheer.”

(Mark 1:14-20) February 4 Happy New Teaching! (Mark 1:21-28 February 11 Transfiguration of our Lord sermon by Dr. David Ludwig

Thanks to everyone who gave extra time and energy for all of our Advent and Christmas events: Singers and ringers, for special music, especially the service of Lessons and Carols; Volunteers who provided the Senior Lunch, and food for special events; Those who decorated the sanctuary, chapel, and other places; Participants in worship leadership for the many extra services; Staff members for their increased efforts during this busy season; Seminarian Mark Moretz for his assistance at Christmas worship services. And many who have attended, prayed, and served so that our festival time here at Concordia was meaningful to many people who were edified and whose faith is strengthened as we celebrated the birth of the Savior of the World, Jesus Christ.

Looking Ahead… 2018 – An Anniversary Year at Concordia

The congregation was founded in 1878, making Concordia 140 years old. The “new” sanctuary was dedicated in 1958, marking 60 years of worship in this sacred space.

FAITHbooking 2018 The New Year usually brings new planners/calendars and devotionals! I will show you a process of how to add prayers, prayer requests, comments of gratitude, daily devotionals and scripture to your planner/calendars. In addition, we will work to create a Scripture Reference Box. Have you ever had someone approach you and say “If I only could remember that scripture about ___________?” The Scripture Reference Box will be like a card catalog of scriptures that are helps in dealing with grief, sickness, challenge ,loss etc. The reference box will have headings such as, direction, encouragement, forgiveness, etc. As you come across scripture that falls under that heading you simply write it on an index card and file it in the box. We will continue to work each month on learning to slow down and be aware of what the scriptures mean to us and how we can apply that meaning to our daily do’s. Come join us and learn about Bible Journaling, Illustrated Faith and the new Visual Faith Ministry of the SED/LCMS. FAITHbooking will meet the first Saturday of each month beginning January 6th from 10:00 am – 1:00PM in the Emmaus Room. Children who are in Kindergarten and older are invited to come with a participating adult. For more FAITHbooking information contact: Belinda Bost 828 144-1905 or [email protected]

Prison Pen Pal Ministry—An Exciting Inside Story Ron is an inmate in Texas. In his letter previously he wrote: “ I broke down and said, to hell with it. I’m not going to do all this time by myself. I thought I might as well kill myself and get it over with. So that night, alone in my cell, I was getting ready to hang myself when I remembered that letter my niece sent me where she told me to pray. I had no idea how to pray, but I did. I prayed for the first time in my life.” Recently Ron graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary program in prison, and he informed us in his last letter “This is a unique school as it’s the only one in Texas and second only to the seminary at Angola prison in Louisiana. Once I graduate, I will be sent out to another unit to minister God’s Word to the inmate population. . . I thank God for ministries such as the Dorcas Society which reaches out to men behind bars. “I graduated May 9, 2017, and arrived at Allred Unit ten days later. Life as one of the five field ministers here is very busy. There are almost 4,000 men here, so you can imagine how much time is required to deal with the individual needs of everyone. The unit has a High Security, Administrative Segregation, Hospice, Medium Custody, and Safe-keeping, in addition to the General Population. It’s a very big place. I

walk just over a quarter of a mile to the dining room. Some days I put miles behind me with all the walking I get to do. “I’ve been preaching a lot! On Saturdays myself and two other of my teammates run a chapel service for the men in medium custody. One of my teammates is Catholic, so we don’t let him preach at a Protestant service. Therefore, all the preaching falls on myself and another FM. Next, on Sunday morning we rotate back and forth preaching this service. Then on Wednesdays and Thursdays we teach the PACE program in the Ad Seg. PACE stands for Prisoners Advancing in the Correction Environment. The rest of the time we do suicide intervention, grief counsel, hospice, mentoring and anything else that the chaplaincy needs done. “I never imagined how much was going to be required of me or how much I would love doing this job. I thank God for the demands placed upon me while in college. It prepared me for the next season in my life. “My neighbor Cordell whom everyone just calls T has been very blessed by your letters. . . . I pray that your ministry continues to grow and prosper.”

North Carolina Lutherans for Life will be hosting a pro-life seminar on Sunday, January 28th from 3:00-4:30 pm at St. John’s Lutheran-Conover with refreshments and fellowship to follow. The guest presenter will be Rev. Michael Salemink, the Executive Director of Lutherans for Life. His presentation is entitled “Going Gracefully: Accompanied Suffering Instead of Assisted Suicide”. Our society is currently pushing elderly and infirm people to choose death rather than life. Many families in recent years have felt the push of the current health care system to “allow” their loved one to die and struggled to know how to respond. What is the alternative? Please come and take part in this important seminar. For more information, please call 828-464-4071.

richly provided and pray that He will continue to bless us in the New Year! We

are thankful for an enrollment of 207 students this year and for supportive

parents and grandparents. We are thankful for the dedication of our faculty

and staff and for the many things they voluntarily do to make our school even

more effective. We give God thanks and praise as we daily see children grow

spiritually and academically. May God continue to be with us in 2018.

I pray that God will continue to bless our church and school and each of you! Sandy Smith, Retired Office Assistant
