MUS102 Concert Report Instructions

Listening to live performances is an essential part of learning to appreciate and understand music.

You are required to attend ONE concert during this semester, and may do up to

ONE ADDITIONAL concert report for up to 25 points extra credit.

1. Select one concert to attend. You may attend any of the concerts listed below. If the concert is not listed here you must obtain permission.

2. Write a two-page minimum report describing your experience and the music you heard. Use your ConcertProgram, personal notes, program notes (if there are any), and your text to help your write your report. Youmust use complete sentences and a formal, academic writing style— MPA or APA are acceptable. If you’reunclear what that entails, Google it or set up an appointment with me.

3. Turn in your report, program and concert report form on or before the due date in HARD COPY.

There are concerts going on ALL OVER the Chicago area, aside from JJC’s Musica Viva series and in-residenceensembles (JJC Concert Band, for instance), Lewis University’s Performing Arts series, and the Music at Moserseries at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. Additional v enues to check out: Lyric Opera of Chicago, ChicagoSymphony Center, College of DuPage, North Central College in Naperville and University of St. Francis. MostJJC Concerts are Free.

• Concert admission at JJC unless otherwise noted: $5, general public $4, senior citizens, JJC faculty and staff,and non JJC students $2, JJC students. Free Recitals -Musica Viva, Student Recitals and Honors Recitals

• Some ensembles to Google for current concert listings: Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Chicago Symphony,Chicago Philharmonic, Fox Valley Orchestra, DuPage Symphony Orchestra, Joliet Symphony Orchestra, FoxValley Concert Band, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Antiqua Baroque Consort, Illinois Brass Band

• Concerts at USF are: Adults $10/Seniors (65+), Alumni & Non-USF Students $7/USF Students and Staff Free

• Lewis University’s Spring 2015 Performing Arts Series-Performances begin at 7:30 p.m., all performances arelocated on the university’s main campus in Romeoville. Admission to all events is free for Lewis students, $5 forguests and $10 for the general public. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling (815) 836-5500.

The concert report is due on Wednesday, April 22

at the beginning of class.NO LATE OR EMAILED SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Concert Report Writing Guidelines

Write a two-page report describing your experience and the music you heard. Use the Concert Program, personal notes, program notes (if there are any), and your text to help your write your report.

Directions 1. Submit the two-page report IN HARD COPY. Remember to CITE any sources to avoid plagiarism orviolations of the academic integrity code.2. TURN IN A HARD COPY, CONCERT PROGRAM (This is required. I will not accept a report without a

program or ticket stub as proof of attendance unless one was not issued at the performance— this should be

cleared through me in advance ).

Suggested format of two-page minimum written response• Introduction Paragraph (Cover questions 1-9 on Concert Report Form)• Paragraph #1 (write about Work #1)• Paragraph #2 (write about Work #2)• Paragraph #3 (write about Work #3)

• Conclusion Paragraph (cover questions 10-14)Concert Report Grading: Worth 150 points

Points will be deducted for:• Less than two full pages in length• Spelling errors, lack of punctuation, lack of proper formatting, poor organization, unclear writing style,• Insufficient use of musical terms introduced in class and in the text• Insufficient coverage of music from the concert (at least three works-or musical pieces-are required)• Nonacademic use of English• Not following directions!

Outstanding Concert Report (A: 135-150 points)• All materials submitted on time

(through Dropbox and hard copy in class )• Well-organized and well-written• Followed suggested Report Writing Guidelines very closely• Very few spelling, punctuation or other grammatical errors• Student used a lot of musical vocabulary from class and showed an effort of trying to engage with the music

and describe it using terms from class.
