PROGRAMME NOTES

A warm welcome to this very special concert which takes us far, far away for some 'Adventures in the Magical Kingdom'. We have a special guest arriving today - The King of the Magical Kingdom himself, and you are all invited to a Grand Ball in his Castle. Before the Ball begins we will meet some of the other guests as they arrive. Some of them you will recognise straight away, others might be in disguise! The music will give you clues.

ALAN MENKEN *Be Our GuestThis comes from the 1991 Disney animated version of Beauty and the Beast. An enchantress has cast a spell on a prince turning him into a beast and his servants into household items, and this song is sung by a candlestick while the crockery and kitchen utensils dance in spectacular Broadway style. The song was nominated for an Academy Award but lost to the title song of the film itself.

ALASDAIR MALLOYFanfare for Far, Far AwayA Fanfare is a short piece of music designed to catch your attention or to announce the arrival of someone very important. Please stand up to greet the His Majesty, The King of the Magical Kingdom.

LEROY ANDERSONThe Waltzing CatLeroy Anderson was an American who composed many witty and humorous pieces of music including The Typewriter, the Sandpaper Ballet and one of the most popular pieces of Christmas music, the Sleigh Ride. In The Waltzing Cat he provides a portrait of a sophisticated and graceful moggy moving and meowing in time to the music, but what is the true identity of this first feline guest?

FREDERIC CURZONMarch of the Bowmen(from Robin Hood Suite)Frederic Curzon was a celebrated English composer who wrote many pieces of light, popular music. His Robin Hood Suite has three movements; the first describing Sherwood Forest, home to Robin Hood; the second depicting Maid Marian; and the movement we are going to hear, March of the Bowmen, gives us a heroic impression of Robin and his Merry Men making their way through the forest with their bows at the ready.

MAURICE RAVELEmpress of the Pagodas (from Mother Goose Suite)The French composer Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite has movements which portray fairy tale characters such as Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, Beauty and the Beast and this one, the exotic Empress of the Pagodas who appears in a French fairy tale called The Green Serpent. The pieces were originally written to be played by two people at one piano and then Ravel rewrote all the music for orchestra.

ALAN MENKEN *Colours of the WindThis won the Academy Award in 1995 for Best Original Song and comes from the animated Disney film Pocahontas. Pocahontas is a Native North American girl who has the power to see how everything in nature has a living spirit. In our version today we’ll feature one of our players on an instrument that has the power to open our imaginations and touch our emotions.

EDVARD GRIEGIn the Hall of the Mountain KingEdvard Grieg composed this piece as incidental music for a play based on the adventures of the Norwegian folk hero Peer Gynt. Here he hides in a cave under a great mountain and watches the Trolls arriving one by one to greet the Mountain King. Listen to how the music starts with low instruments very slowly and gets faster and higher as more and more trolls turn up.

ALAN MENKEN *Prince Ali (from Aladdin)Music from Disney’s 1992 animated version of Aladdin, the story of a young boy who finds and rubs a magic lamp causing a Genie to appear with all sorts of surprising consequences. At this point in the film, the Genie has transformed Aladdin into Prince Ali Ababwa who arrives in the city of Agrabah led by a grand procession hoping to impress the beautiful Princess Jasmine.

FRODE FJELLHEIM, KIRSTEN ANDERSON-LOPEZand ROBERT LOPEZ *A Frozen FantasyBased on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Snow Queen, this 2013 animated film from Disney won two Academy Awards, one for Best Animated Feature and the other for Best Original Song for “Let It Go”. A Frozen Fantasy includes some of the

favourite songs from the film, including the opening sequence called Eatnem Vuelie which is based on traditional Sámi music from Lapland. PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKYSleeping Beauty WaltzMagic and fairies take to the air with this waltz from the ballet Sleeping Beauty where a baby princess has been put under a curse by an evil fairy that one day she will prick her finger on a spindle and die. However a good fairy changes the curse so that instead she will sleep for 100 years and then be woken by a kiss from a handsome prince. As the princess grows up the curse is forgotten and we join the story as everyone joins in an elegant waltz unaware that they will soon all be asleep for a very long time. A Fairytale Ending *Will our adventures in the Magical Kingdom have a happy, fairytale ending? Will we party and dance all night long with the other guests? You’ll have to listen carefully throughout the concert to find out!
