Singing Shakespeare Platteville Middle School Fall Choir Concert
November 17, 2016 7:00 PM PHS Auditorium
Marcia Russell, Director Terry Dillon, Accompanist
Tonight we celebrate the contributions of the beloved poet and playwright, William Shakespeare. This year marks the 400th year of Shakespeare’s death, and choirs from all over the world are performing his words set to music. Platteville Middle School is proud to join this celebration! Concert etiquette reminder: Please silence all cell-phones and remain seated during the performances, until the end of the concert. There should be no talking or texting during the performance. If for some reason you need to exit, please use the doors at the back of the auditorium. Thank you! A Mysterious Musical Thread… Tonight, each choir is singing a variation of the same song! Rose, Rose is attributed to Thomas Ravenscroft (1582-1633), a contemporary of William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Please listen carefully and use the clues left in the program to determine which songs are related by tonality and rhythm. At the end of the concert, the singers will combine on stage and you, the audience, will be asked to join along!
Choir Program 6th Grade Choir Come Follow Me John Hilton (1762)
Orpheus Toby Young (b. 1990) Text by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) from Henry VIII Read by Abby Williams, Kendra Burbach, Tatum Zuehlke and Paige Kerkenbush
Orpheus with his lute made trees And the mountain tops that freeze Bow themselves when he did sing: To his music plants and flowers Ever sprung;; as sun and showers There had made a lasting spring.
Every thing that heard him play, Even the billows of the sea, Hung their heads and then lay by. In sweet music is such art, Killing care and grief of heart Fall asleep, or hearing, die.
Hey Ho Nobody Home Pammelia 1609
Additional text by Shakespeare, added by the 6th grade choir
The Ghost Ship Don Besig and Nancy Price
7th Grade Choir When Icicles Hang By The Wall David Lantz III (b. 1956) Text by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) from Love’s Labour’s Lost Read by Jordan Schober-Lange
When icicles hang by the wall, And Dick the shepherd blows his nail, And Tom bears logs into the hall, And milk comes frozen home in pail,
When blood is nipp’d and ways be foul, Then nightly sings the staring owl, Tu-whit;; Tu-who, a merry note, While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.
When all aloud the wind doth blow, And coughing drowns the parson’s saw, And birds sit brooding in the snow, And Marian’s nose looks red and raw, When roasted crabs hiss in the bowl, Then nightly sings the staring owl, Tu-whit;; Tu-who, a merry note, While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.
Ah, Poor Bird English Round Additional text written and performed by 7th Grade Choir members: Emily Philipps and Bristol Ogden/Quinn Coder/Brianna Plowman/Kennedy Johnston and Haylynne

what you know of the great journey you have made.
You Spotted Snakes Toby Young (b. 1990) Text by William Shakespeare (1564-1616) from A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Read by Melanie Wood
You spotted snakes with double tongue,
Thorny hedgehogs, be not seen;;
Newts and blind-worms, do no wrong,
Come not near our fairy queen.
Philomel, with melody Sing in our sweet lullaby.
Never harm, Nor spell nor charm,
Come our lovely lady nigh;; So, good night, with lullaby.
Weaving spiders, come not here;;
Hence, you long-legg'd spinners, hence!
Beetles black, approach not near;;
Worm nor snail, do no offence.
Philomel, with melody Sing in our sweet lullaby.
