Meet the SpeakersDr. Angela Broome, DDS, MS is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at UNC School of Dentistry. She received her DDS and MS degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has attained her fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, has completed the ADEA Leadership Institute Program and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. She currently serves as Director for the UNC Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Graduate Program.

K. Brandon Johnson, RDH, MS completed his dental education at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2005 and subsequently completed a Master of Science degree in the UNC Dental Hygiene Education program in 2013. Prior to entering graduate school, he practiced in a general dental office for six years. He also has several years of experience working as a dental lab technician. Brandon is currently a member and officer of the Sigma Phi Alpha, Xi Chapter, Dental Honor Society. He won �rst place for his dosimetry research in the Turner Award competition at the UNC Dental Research and Review Day at UNC. Brandon has a strong passion for dental radiology which is where his research focus remains, predominantly in dosimetric evaluation and analysis of various imaging modalities. Today, Brandon serves as a faculty in the division of radiology at UNC. In addition, he is currently enrolled in a doctoral program and is working towards a PhD. Brandon currently enjoys providing leadership to the community and healthcare professionals and fully preparing students for today’s professional standards as well as the ever changing nature of the dental profession.

Course Director - Sally Mauriello, RDH, EdD is a Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology at the UNC School of Dentistry. She received her A.A.S. in Dental Hygiene from Central Piedmont Community College, her B.S. in Dental Auxiliary Teacher Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her M.Ed. with a minor in radiology and EdD. with a minor in gerontology in Adult and Community College Education from North Carolina State University.

Dr. Mauriello worked full-time in private practice from 1974-1977 and worked part-time with a medically compromised population for three years. Having taught at the University of North Carolina for 38 years, her current teaching responsibilities include dental radiology. In addition, she has co-authored a text book entitled Radiographic Imaging for the Dental Team. Dr. Mauriello has received several awards for teaching excellence and presented at professional meetings at the state, national and international levels. Professionally, Dr. Mauriello has served as a Consultant and Staff Representative for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and currently is a member of the CODA Dental Hygiene Review committee. Dr. Mauriello’s current interests include research in radiology and calibration of research examiners for clinical studies.

Vickie Overman, RDH, MEd previously served as the Director of the Undergraduate Dental Hygiene program and as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology at the UNC School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill for 32 years. While at UNC her teaching responsibilities included clinical dental radiology, dental materials, clinical dental hygiene and community dental health. She has presented continuing education courses at the local, state, national and international levels for many years and co-authored a radiology textbook in 1993. Currently, she continues to serve on the editorial board for the Journal of Dental Hygiene.

Enrique (Rick) Platin, RTR, MS, Ed.D. is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the UNC School of Dentistry. He was trained in radiological sciences at New York Policlinic Medical School and Hospital, received a B.A. in romance languages and physical sciences from Queens College, City University of New York, an M.S. in education from Western Illinois University, and a doctorate degree in health occupations education and adult community college education from North Carolina State University.

Donald (Don) Tyndall, DDS, MSPH, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the UNC School of Dentistry and Director of Radiology. He received his D.D.S. in 1980, his M.S.P.H. in 1984 and his Ph.D. in 1988 from the UNC School of Public Health. Dr. Tyndall has been the Director of Radiology for the School of Dentistry from 1988 to the present. He was the creator and program director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Graduate Program at UNC from 1993 to 2006. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and was a Director and past President from 1995-1999. Dr. Tyndall has twice served as the Councillor for Scienti�c Affairs and Public Policy of the Executive Council of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. His research interests include: 3-D digital imaging, 2D and 3D caries detection, implant radiology and applications of cone beam computed tomography in dentistry. His work has been published in more than 110 journal articles.

Course DescriptionThis course is designed as an interactive experience to allow dental educators to update their dental radiology concepts and apply this information using various learning strategies. The Commission on Dental Accreditation standards will be addressed, as well as measurement strategies and application of learning principles in the classroom and laboratory settings. Highlights of radiology concepts will be presented, including radiation biology, projection geometry/technique errors, digital radiography, grading calibration, advanced imaging, quality assurance, educational theory, and radiographic interpretation. Laboratory activities will supplement the concepts that are presented. Certi�cation Activities for Hand-held Radiographic Devices will be offered at no additional charge but individuals seeking certi�cation will need to complete pre-requisites prior to Monday, July 16, 2018.

Educational ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Discuss adult learning principles and apply them to educational situations.

• Discuss accreditation standards for radiology and apply them to program outcomes and measurement strategies.

• Develop performance criteria and discuss faculty calibration for grading dental radiographs.

Meet the SpeakersDr. Angela Broome, DDS, MS is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at UNC School of Dentistry. She received her DDS and MS degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has attained her fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, has completed the ADEA Leadership Institute Program and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. She currently serves as Director for the UNC Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Graduate Program.

K. Brandon Johnson, RDH, MS completed his dental education at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2005 and subsequently completed a Master of Science degree in the UNC Dental Hygiene Education program in 2013. Prior to entering graduate school, he practiced in a general dental office for six years. He also has several years of experience working as a dental lab technician. Brandon is currently a member and officer of the Sigma Phi Alpha, Xi Chapter, Dental Honor Society. He won �rst place for his dosimetry research in the Turner Award competition at the UNC Dental Research and Review Day at UNC. Brandon has a strong passion for dental radiology which is where his research focus remains, predominantly in dosimetric evaluation and analysis of various imaging modalities. Today, Brandon serves as a faculty in the division of radiology at UNC. In addition, he is currently enrolled in a doctoral program and is working towards a PhD. Brandon currently enjoys providing leadership to the community and healthcare professionals and fully preparing students for today’s professional standards as well as the ever changing nature of the dental profession.

Course Director - Sally Mauriello, RDH, EdD is a Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology at the UNC School of Dentistry. She received her A.A.S. in Dental Hygiene from Central Piedmont Community College, her B.S. in Dental Auxiliary Teacher Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her M.Ed. with a minor in radiology and EdD. with a minor in gerontology in Adult and Community College Education from North Carolina State University.

Dr. Mauriello worked full-time in private practice from 1974-1977 and worked part-time with a medically compromised population for three years. Having taught at the University of North Carolina for 38 years, her current teaching responsibilities include dental radiology. In addition, she has co-authored a text book entitled Radiographic Imaging for the Dental Team. Dr. Mauriello has received several awards for teaching excellence and presented at professional meetings at the state, national and international levels. Professionally, Dr. Mauriello has served as a Consultant and Staff Representative for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and currently is a member of the CODA Dental Hygiene Review committee. Dr. Mauriello’s current interests include research in radiology and calibration of research examiners for clinical studies.

Vickie Overman, RDH, MEd previously served as the Director of the Undergraduate Dental Hygiene program and as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology at the UNC School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill for 32 years. While at UNC her teaching responsibilities included clinical dental radiology, dental materials, clinical dental hygiene and community dental health. She has presented continuing education courses at the local, state, national and international levels for many years and co-authored a radiology textbook in 1993. Currently, she continues to serve on the editorial board for the Journal of Dental Hygiene.

Enrique (Rick) Platin, RTR, MS, Ed.D. is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the UNC School of Dentistry. He was trained in radiological sciences at New York Policlinic Medical School and Hospital, received a B.A. in romance languages and physical sciences from Queens College, City University of New York, an M.S. in education from Western Illinois University, and a doctorate degree in health occupations education and adult community college education from North Carolina State University.

Donald (Don) Tyndall, DDS, MSPH, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the UNC School of Dentistry and Director of Radiology. He received his D.D.S. in 1980, his M.S.P.H. in 1984 and his Ph.D. in 1988 from the UNC School of Public Health. Dr. Tyndall has been the Director of Radiology for the School of Dentistry from 1988 to the present. He was the creator and program director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Graduate Program at UNC from 1993 to 2006. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and was a Director and past President from 1995-1999. Dr. Tyndall has twice served as the Councillor for Scienti�c Affairs and Public Policy of the Executive Council of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. His research interests include: 3-D digital imaging, 2D and 3D caries detection, implant radiology and applications of cone beam computed tomography in dentistry. His work has been published in more than 110 journal articles.

Course DescriptionThis course is designed as an interactive experience to allow dental educators to update their dental radiology concepts and apply this information using various learning strategies. The Commission on Dental Accreditation standards will be addressed, as well as measurement strategies and application of learning principles in the classroom and laboratory settings. Highlights of radiology concepts will be presented, including radiation biology, projection geometry/technique errors, digital radiography, grading calibration, advanced imaging, quality assurance, educational theory, and radiographic interpretation. Laboratory activities will supplement the concepts that are presented. Certi�cation Activities for Hand-held Radiographic Devices will be offered at no additional charge but individuals seeking certi�cation will need to complete pre-requisites prior to Monday, July 16, 2018.

Educational ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Discuss adult learning principles and apply them to educational situations.

• Discuss accreditation standards for radiology and apply them to program outcomes and measurement strategies.

UNC Continuing Dental Education designates this course for up to 23.75 hours of continuing education credit.

The UNC School of Dentistry is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.

This continuing education program is presented by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of

Dentistry and the Department of Dental Ecology. The UNC Continuing Dental Education program is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. UNC CDE’s term of recognition is May 1, 2015 through June 30, 2019. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.
