AIEF aims to leverage Indian
experience and expertise for
promoting mutual economic
development among the MSMEs
of the Member Countries.
AIEF will uphold and promote
mutual trust and understanding
between the Members.
AIEF is an Organization formed to
serve as an Institutional Mechanism to
be a platform for the MSMEs to
promote trade, commerce and
investments between India and the 55
countries of Africa.
The scope of co-operation extends
from business associations,
Chambers of commerce and MSMEs
in India and Africa.

Genesis of AIEF

of TEAM-9, a Techno Economic
Approach for Africa India Movement
bringing together India and select eight
West African nations.
AIEF
G. Rathinavelu shared the idea with
Presidents of select 8 West African countries
(Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Cote
d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Guinea
Bissau) during October 2002, who were
convinced of the concept.

Cooperation and support for the
formation of TEAM-9 during Jan 2002.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry also extends assistance, cooperation and
support on the formation of TEAM-9 towards India’s Trade in African Countries
during Feb 2003.
MEA organized a meeting on economic and Commercial Opportunities through
TEAM-9 frame work during Oct 2003 and the participation from public and private
sector were very good.

A preparatory meeting at the Foreign Secretary level in the Foreign Ministry was held
in New Delhi in February 2004.
The Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the eight countries with India was held in New
Delhi in March 2004, wherein a joint Memorandum of Understanding was signed and
India pledged concessional credit of USD 500 million for projects in TEAM-9 countries.

Based on the experience and success of TEAM-9
during 2004 it was felt that there is a larger
potential for the MSMEs from India to contribute
for the development of Africa by aligning with the
MSMEs of Africa through the respective Chambers
of commerce and associations.

Africa India Economic Foundation was formed to
promote and create interaction between the
MSMEs of India and Africa through their respective
Chambers of Commerce, so as to enable the
cooperation of MSMEs to contribute for the
economic development of Africa at large, as the
MSMEs are the backbone of every nation.

1. INDUSTRIAL - Quality tools and Machinery are the Back bone of
the African Manufacturing industry and very important in sectors
such as turning, milling, grinding as well as sheet metal, laser.
Plasma cutting bending and presses.
2. DEFENSE - Africa is considered tomorrows growth market for the
defense industry. Demand is often for the cheapest, simplest
weapons.
3. AGRI BUSINESS - It is Africa’s untapped goldmine. with 60% of the
worlds uncultivated fertile arable land Realizing the potential, the
Governments of Africa are supporting agribusiness initiatives.
4. EDUCATION - Africa’s huge human resources are an
underexplored asset. Low cost education initiatives for African
countries are in demand.

INDIA has always shared a bond with African countries, and the
presence of the Indian Diaspora in many of these African countries has
played an important role in attracting Indian business opportunities in
these African Nations, as it facilitates cultural and business ties between
nations.
The strategy of Indian companies in Africa is both resource and market
seeking as these African countries have great potential for both forward
and backward integration.
Further green field investments are desirable due to their contribution to
creating new production capacity, employment and transfer of
technology.

The Indian trade and investment with Africa has been in existence since the
60’s, but was limited to some large Indian companies only.
The Indian private sector, especially the Micro, Small and Medium scale
industries (MSMEs) having new Indian technologies, experience and
expertise in various sectors such as industrial manufacturing, defense
production, education, health care, transportation, pharmaceuticals,
agricultural and various other industries have opportunities to have a
presence in Africa.
Further the experience and expertise of India in Information Technology, IT
enabled services and digital networking, can be greatly beneficial in the
development of the African nations.
The importance of the Indian Private sector to diversify the Indian Trade
basket with Africa is vital to meet the challenges of the growing influence of
other nations in Africa

Since India was able to bring successful reforms after her independence,
the conductor environment prevailing in the regulation of business in India
is more business friendly. Our achievements in the hi-tech fields of IT,
Industrial, Defense production and pharmaceuticals have given us a global
profile and the necessary confidence to challenge others.
Furthermore, India’s strong economic growth based on a solid foundation
of diversified agriculture, robust scientific, technological, industrial and
entrepreneurial capabilities and multi-faceted service sectors of India can
held in achieving progress leading to VIBRANT AFRICA.

A Vibrant Africa

The concept has been presented to the Government of India and after
several discussions, the Government has welcomed the concept of the
AIEF and a detailed proposal is to be submitted.
The concept has also been briefed to several Governments in Africa, who
have also welcomed the idea of formation of the AIBC for bringing in
closer cooperation between the MSMEs of India and Africa.

AIEF will enroll members from Micro Small and Medium enterprises,
Associations of MSMEs and Chambers of Commerce in both India and
Africa.
AIEF will form Africa India Business Centre which will be
headquartered in Mumbai with permanent Trade representatives from
all the 54 African nations.

The Primary aim of the Foundation is to increase the effective
partnership between the Indian and African MSMEs, encouraging
exchange of technology and Expertise that would help them to access
to the African market for their products and services and also diversify
the Indian MSMEs presence in Africa.
