The Concept of GenderAn English teacher was explaining the
concept of gender to his students. He stated how hurricanes at one
time were given feminine names and how ships and planeswere usually
referred to as "she". One of the students raised the question
"Wha
t gender is a computer?" The teacher wasn't certain which it
was, so he dividedthe class into two groups, males and females, and
asked them to decide if a computer should be masculine or feminine.
Both groups were asked to give four reason
s for their recommendation.
The group of women concluded that computers should be referred
to as masculine gender because:1. In order to get their attention ,
you have to turn them on.2. They have a lot of data, but still are
clueless.3. They are supposed to help you solve your problems, but
half the time they ARE the problems.4. AS soon you commit to one,
you realize that , if you had waited a little longer, you could
have had a better one!The group of men, on the other hand decided
that computers should DEFINITELY bereferred to as feminine gender
as :
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.2.
The native language they use to communicate with other computers is
incomprehensible to everyone else.3. Even your smallest mistakes
are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval.4. As soon you
make commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your
paycheck on accessories for it.
LET IT BE SOGOD created the mule and told him " You are the
mule. You shall bear the burdenof the world going back and forth.
You shall live for 30 years." The mule objected "What is the use of
living 30 years bearing the burden of the world. Make it
only 15 years." GOD said "Let it be so."
Then GOD made the dog and told "You are the dog. You shall guard
the earthly valuables and shall be man's best companion. You shall
live for 25 years." The dogrefused " Make it only 10." GOD said"Let
it be so."
GOD then created the monkey and told "You are the monkey. You
are the clown of the pack. You shall entertain the world. You shall
live 20 years." The monkey complained "Living the life of a clown
for 20 years. No, please make it only 10 years." GOD said "Let it
be so."
GOD then made the MAN and told him "You are the man. You are the
only rational being and you have the power of logic. You will be
the master of all. You shalllive for 25 years." The man whined
"Only 25 years, give me the 15 the mule refused, the 15 the dog
refused and the 10 the monkey refused." GOD said "Let it be
so."
So the man lived 25 years as a free and independent creature.
Then married, andlived 15 years as a mule bearing the burden of his
wife's demands. Then 15 yearsas a dog, guarding his children. Then
10 years clowning around, making a fool o
f himself to entertain his grandchildren.
