DAN’s DIALOG

Great things continue to happen for Branch 69. I am attending the State SIR meeting on Au-gust 1st and I will report on all the exciting news at our next luncheon. You will want to be there.

If you all are not “conventioned” out, get ready for our elections for 2017 officers. Getting no nomi-nees from the floor, on August 11th I will be asking you to

confirm our slate: Jerry Schroeder – Big SIR, Tony Vigil – Little SIR, Ron Hutcheson – Secretary, Dennis Jones – Asst. Secretary, Jerry Buhlert – Treasurer, Hal Copperberg – Asst. Treasurer, and Directors – Steve Eason, Greg Schweitzer, Jim Huffman, Bill Nichols, Jim Buckley and Dan Calcagno. Please give them the same great support you have provided me. We have roles for the rest of you so come see me about your niche in the Branch.

We are in the process of reviewing our active/inactive members and moving some to Emeritus status. This is a designation reserved for long-standing gentlemen who want to still be considered part of Branch 69 but might have diffi-culty attending the luncheons on a regular basis. We are also acting on some requests from people who no longer

wish to be active. And as I am constantly marveling at, we continue to grow in numbers. During the first 7 months of 2016, we have greeted 19 new faces ; 1 moved from the in-active list, 6 have transferred from other Branches and 12 are new to SIR. The Golf Expo has brought us 2 (with the possibility of several more) so I thank Tom Page and all the volunteers who worked the booth. Dan Nelson is leading the Sponsorship race with 2 but 7 others have introduced 1 friend to our ranks. Again, thank you all and I am sure this is an ongoing trend.

During the Social Hour, before our lunch, I try to walk around and chat with everyone. If you have something to say, please approach me and tell me the good and the bad of your experiences. If it is bad, try to also offer suggestions

for improvements. I will bring those ideas to the Branch Ex-ecutive Committee and, who knows, your comments might likely spark changes to make us even better.

See you August 11th. And expect a surprise or two – like wishing me a Happy Birthday (August 6 for those of you that might have forgotten – Frank).

JERRY BUILT

I heard that our speaker, Betty Vosters-Kemp, from Avalon Hearing Aid Centers, did an excellent, entertaining presentation.

She made the subject of hearing loss and what action to take very interesting. Her ex-planation of the 30,00 nerves in the ear, which through age can deteriorate and die, explained a lot about hearing

loss.

Unless you’re a chicken, who it was discovered can regenerate these dead nerves, you might need to take ac-tion sooner rather than later. The advancement in Hear-ing Aids are astounding. Hearing Aids do come with a price tag so it is a judgement call. If cost is not the issue, it may not be wise to procrastinate. When was the last time you had your hearing checked?

I won’t be able to make the August luncheon. I’ll be in Ashland for a family week. However, I have a good pro-gram for you.

Dr. Bob Welti is also a SIR, in fact Little Sir of the

Penn Valley Branch 11 and an Honorary Life Member. Bob has over 50 years of aerospace experience, and is the author of Satellite Basics for Everyone.

Bob will entertain you with his presentation of “The

Amazing World of Satellites”. We enjoy global television,

radio, telephone, and Internet communications via satel-

lites. They are also essential for our national defense.

Have you ever wondered what are the different types of

satellites, what orbits are used for them, how we get them

into orbit and how do we keep them there? Bob will be

giving us answers to these and other questions, with illus-

We had a banner month for recruiting in July with five new members and some guests in attendance. This is great recruiting! Of note with the five new members, all were born in the 1950’s. This is how we keep the branch young and growing.

Be sure to read the bios

for the new members; they come from varied back-grounds and have done some interesting things in their lives.

SIR GARY CONNER 9423 Mary Ellen Way Elk Grove 95624

(916) 685-4500 [email protected] Sponsor: Dan Nelson

Gary was born in Sacramento but grew up in Wilton. Gary graduated from Elk Grove High School and Sacramento City College before attending UC Davis, from which he graduated in 1972 with a degree in agricultural business economics. His next stop was the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, where he completed a four-year program in three years. With his chiropractic degree in hand, Gary returned to the Sacramento area and opened up his chiropractic office. He practiced here for 25 years until his first retire-ment and then spent ten years teaching special needs chil-dren for the Elk Grove Unified School District.

Gary and his wife, Sue, have one daughter. Gary loves golf, plays a lot, and marshals at Emerald Lakes on Wednesdays. That golf course was also the scene of two amazing events in Gary’s golfing life. In 1994, he was held up at gunpoint on the 5th tee box there. Ten years later, he scored his one and only hole in one from the same tee box! Obviously, the second experience was more fun than the first.

Birthday: August 17, 1950 Anniversary: Sue, June 12, 1976

Jim was born and raised here in Sacra-mento, graduating from Jesuit High School in 1968. He next attended American River for two years and Sacramento State for two more years, graduating with a degree in business management. Shortly thereafter, Jim went to work for what is now AT&T as an outside plant engineer, which involved doing design work for tele-communications equipment.

Jim worked for AT&T until 1990, when he left to work for an independent construction company as a pro-ject manager, again with telecommunications equipment. He did this for several construction companies until he retired in May of this year.

Jim likes golf, which he plays well, softball and hiking. Birthday: May 10, 1950

Sacramento 95831 (916) 395-7433 [email protected] Sponsor: Dan Nelson

Rick was born in Florence, Arizona, near Tucson, but grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. After high school, Rick went to USC in Los Angeles, from which he earned a degree in biology. He also went to grad school at USC, achieving a PhD in molecular biology.

ferred to Sacramento. Three years later, Roche sold the Sacramento lab to Laboratory Corporation of American.

At this point, Rick went to work for a small Bay Area laboratory and helped their effort to go public, which made a lot of money for everyone. Ultimately, Rick joined UC Davis as an assistant professor and later as chief busi-ness officer of the med school. After 23 years at UC Davis, Rick retired in 2015.

Rick and his wife, Nancy, have two children and two grandchildren. He loves golf, computer and technology work, digital photography, RV travel, and ham radio.
