• systems software : Includes the operating system and all the utilities that enable the computer to function. This allows you to use the computer hardware and other software types such as application software and programming software

• applications software : Includes programs that do real work for users. For example, word processors, spreadsheets, and database management systems fall under the category of applications software.

• Programming software - allows you develop the other 2 types of software – examples are Java, Turing, Actionscript, Javascript, C++, html Visual Basic and many others

• Software is needed to run the computer hardware. It helps run the peripherals, loads programs, runs programs and many other duties.
