Negative stereotyping of computer scientists as “geeks who stay upall night coding and who have nosocial life” may be driving girlsaway from the eld, according to

research in a recent issue of theJournal of Personality and Social Psychology.

The Women in Computer Science Dayfor Year 10 girls aims to tackle some of these myths and to raise awareness of what Computer Science is at universitylevel. Including:

• meet women (and men) who workin the Computer Science eld

— nd out how they’re changingthe world: from automatic languagetranslation to modelling the humanbody;

• try out our hands-on activities — willyour team be the rst to solve our Computer Science treasure hunt?

• visit an Oxford college — nd outwhat it’s really like to live and studyat Oxford;

• nd out what computer science reallyis — it’s not just ICT and it certainlyisn’t just for boys and geeks.

Taster day for Year 10 girls from UKschools and their teachers/parents.Free. Booking essential. Lunchincluded. Max. 10 girls per school.

UNIQ Summer Schools provide anopportunity for academically giftedstudents, who have a passion for learning, to discover what it is liketo be an undergraduate at Oxford

University.

The summer school is a week-longintensive programme of academicstudy. The Computer Science courseintroduces some of the material thata Computer Science student wouldstudy as part of a degree at Oxford:participants attend lectures givenby Oxford tutors and participate inpractical computing sessions wherethey have the chance to try some

programming, using Maths learnt at ALevel. Throughout the week there willalso be workshops on the applicationprocess, UCAS, interviews and muchmore. Evenings are spent socialisingwith new-found friends, includingexisting student mentors, through awide range of activities.

Transport, accommodation inCollege and meals, together withyour academic course and eveningactivities are provided free of charge.

Open to high-performing UK stateschool students studying in the Lower Sixth at the time of applying. Studentsapplying for the Computer Sciencestream must be taking Maths to A2level or equivalent. Applications for UNIQ 2011 close at 7:00pm on 24thFebruary 2011.

of automated reasoning and what thismight achieve.

Oxford University is introducing a newundergraduate degree in Computer Scienceand Philosophy. This event is ideal for those interested in learning more about thecourse; those with a passion for Maths, butwho are undecided about what to study atuniversity; and those who already have aninterest in one or other (or both) subjectsand would like to nd out more:

• explore the areas where Computer Science and Philosophy meet, and attendan Oxford lecture;

• nd out what Computer Science reallyis, and how it is different from IT taught inschools;

• learn about the Oxford applicationprocess and explore real interviewquestions with the tutors who ask them;

At 2:45pm visit the departmentfor a talk on ‘what is Computer Science?’ by one of our tutors. The day can be rounded off with a tour of either St John’s or Worcester College at 4pm. Open to prospective studentsand their families. Free. Booking essential. Please note that the tours and talk are intended

to give you a taste of Oxford but they cannot provide the same depth or detail as the aboveopen days.
