A. Welcome and Introductions A luncheon meeting of the Computer-Aided Drafting/Computer Graphic Design Advisory Committee was held on December 8, 2011, at 12 noon at the Chicago Dough Company in Bourbonnais. After general welcomes, John Bordeau brought the meeting to order.

B. Approval of Minutes John asked committee members to review the minutes from the Spring 2010 Advisory Committee meeting. With no changes noted, Hal Berg moved to accept the minutes, and Richard Condon seconded the motion.

II. Program Update

A. Enrollment data John reported that enrollment trends especially in Computer Graphic are up. The addition of new adjunct instructors and a new printer are helping with these numbers. B. Graduates The CAD program saw 6 students graduate with Associate Degrees in Spring 2012. The Computer Graphic Design program had one student graduate with an Associate Degree and one student graduate with an Advanced Certificate.

C. Demographics 1. CAD – Most students in CAD are non-traditional students. Most of the students are between 30-56 years of age. 2. CGD – The vast majority o CGD students are traditional students. Most of the students are between 18-30 years of age.

D. Program Costs John distributed lists of the program costs for both the CAD and CGD programs. He added that the programs are still a “steal” compared to other colleges. The price of books, lab fees, consumables and color printing costs account for some of the rise in costs. Tom Kapusta asked if John is seeing more technology use by students. John stated that 95% of assignments in CAD are sent electronically to and from students. More training videos for instructions including Revit, Inventor, and AutoCAD are internet-based. KCC, in general, wants to encourage the use of videos in teaching.

E. Current offerings

III. Student Success A. Course retention The State of Illinois is changing the method of how community college will be paid. In the past, the measure of payment was determined by student enrollment and the number of credit hours generated on the tenth day of enrollment. The State of Illinois will now move to a measure of payment based on the number of students who successfully complete a class and the number of students who complete degrees or certificates. Paul Carlson added that the challenge is getting the legislature to understand that for many students, finishing 1 or 2 classes is what they consider completion.

B. Certifications/Licensure The Industrial Safety class (ELTR 1402) will now include certifications in the following areas:

10-hour OSHA training

CPR by the Red Cross

First Aid by the Red Cross III. Others

A. Upcoming faculty needs John stated that there is projected to be a need for AutoCAD I instructors who have AutoCAD 2012 and advanced ANGEL learning management system skills in the 2012-2013 school year due to increased enrollment that will be accepted in AutoCAD I.

B. Current offerings Fall classes offered include: DRFT 1154 – Technical Drafting & Print Reading DRFT 2114 – CAD I DRFT 2134 – CAD III DRFT 2414 – Architectural Drafting DSGN 1113 – Digital Photography (2 classes) DSGN 1123 – Intro to Web Design

DSGN 1213 – Photoshop Digital Imaging (2 classes) DSGN 1243 – Computer Illustration

C. Faculty development John was selected as a speaker at Autodesk University 2011. His speaking topics for this year were:

Creating 3D Primitives and Composites in AutoCAD

Dynamic Block Tools in AutoCAD

Introduction to Parametric Drafting in AutoCAD John attended classes on the following software: Revit Architecture Green Building Suite Fusion (3D Conceptual Modeling) – new technology similar to Google Sketch-Up

D. Curriculum Revisions Name changes: CAD I has been changed to AutoCAD I CAD II has been changed to AutoCAD II CAD III has been changed to AutoCAD III Architectural Drafting has been changed to Architectural Drafting with Revit Technical Illustration has been changed to Mechanical Drafting with Inventor Course description changes: Descriptions of CAD I, CAD II, and CAD III were changed to reflect the use of AutoCAD. The description of Architectural Drafting now reflects the use of Revit. The description of Technical Illustration now reflects more Inventor content. The description of Digital Motion Graphics has dropped the usage of AfterEffects software. The class focuses on Flash. Curriculum changes: DRFT 1154 – Technical Drafting and Print Reading has been dropped from the following curriculum and has been replaced with AutoCAD I starting with Fall 2012. There is expected to be three offerings of AutoCAD I in the Fall 2012 and two offerings of AutoCAD I in the Spring 2013.

Automotive Technology

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Welding Technology

Machine Tool Technology

Construction Management ELTR 1423 – Electrical Drafting has been dropped from the Electrical Technology curriculum and has been replaced with AutoCAD I beginning in Fall 2012.

DSGN 1253 – Portfolio Development has been dropped from the Computer Graphic Design curriculum and has been replaced with AutoCAD I starting Fall 2012. Portfolio development will be included in each DSGN class at that time. The AutoCAD I class will have common basic labs for the first eight weeks of class. For the final eight weeks, the labs will be applied to each discipline according to the individual student’s program of study, such as:

Automotive Technology

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Welding Technology

Machine Tool Technology

Construction Management

Electrical Technology

Computer Graphic Design

Computer-Aided Drafting There was discussion by Committee members of the need to continue sketching and manual drafting in the curriculum. John explained that there will be enough sketching and lettering that will be included in AutoCAD I. IV. New Business

A. Emerging Technology – Trends in the Industry CAD – Green Building Studio Autodesk® Green Building Studio® web-based energy analysis software can help architects and designers perform whole building analysis, optimize energy efficiency, and work toward carbon neutrality earlier in the design process. With faster, more accurate energy analysis of building design proposals, architects and designers can work with sustainability in mind earlier in the process, plan proactively, and build better. CGD – HTML vs. Flash A collection of new technologies including a rejuvenated HTML standard used to write Web pages are aiming to reproduce some of what Flash offers. Many believe that HTML and the other technologies will replace Flash and already are very close to reproducing today’s Flash abilities. John will follow the industry as it develops.

B. Employment Trends John has received more calls from employers to place students in both CAD and CGD positions since this past spring then the entire past three years combined.

C. Program Outcomes John distributed program and course outcomes to Committee members. He asked that they review them and let him know if they reflect what should be the outcomes for the CAD and CGD courses and programs.

D. Recruitment Activities and Retention Efforts A Career and Technical Education (CTE) Open House will be held on Thursday, February 23rd from about 6-7:30 p.m. This will be open to the public. Undecided Seniors Day will be held on Friday, February 24th from approximately 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for area high school seniors. The DRFT 2134 CAD III class will present their solid model, color renderings, and animations of their futuristic concept vehicles on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 6 p.m. in room W108 (CAD lab).

E. Comments Wayne Baranowski asked if many students are bringing in their own laptops for use. John stated that approximately 15-20% seem to use them. Bob Bohlmann asked if students are able to use AutoCAD at home. John replied that 90% of CAD work is done at home by students. Matt Moore stated that Adobe does provide CS5 with one license that can be used between two students. John will look into this along with the IT department.

F. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m. VII. Project Photofly Demonstration John gave a demonstration a free program called 123D Catch. The program is offered at http://labs.autodesk.com/technologies/123D. The program builds a 3-D model from regular digital photos that the user downloads. Respectfully Submitted, _________________________ John Bordeau
