Dear Compton Parents,

Welcome to our New School Year! Our Meet and Greet was wonderful and our first two weeks of school have been magical. Excitement is in the air! We are expecting great things for our students and community this year. Together, we can expect great success and growth in learning during this upcoming year!

Congratulations to Kayla Williams and Jahira Williams, our winners of the monthly PTA Newsletter Contest drawing! We hope you love your Smencils! More contest opportunities can be found in your next issue of the Compton PTA newsletter. Our next lucky winners could be your

child(ren)!

We have several exciting new events coming up, so be sure to watch for the PTA newsletter to come home in your child's Thursday folder at the beginning of each month. For example, this Friday is Hat Day. Bring in a $1.00 donation for the PTA and wear a hat in school that day.

Are you interested in joining the Parent Teacher Association? Would you like to know how YOU can help make a difference in your child's school? Adults interested in volunteer opportunities within the PTA are invited to come sit with us on Sept. 18 at 7:00pm in the Media Center for an enlighten-ing evening. We are fired up!

For those of you who have already paid membership dues, your new membership cards are now in! If you haven’t received yours already, look for them to come home soon in your child’s folder.

Brand new Compton t-shirts are here! You’ll love the new design. These shirts look great! Come by the Media Center and take a look for yourself. Watch for order forms to be sent home soon!

Students cannot be released after 1:45 pm due to our dismissal process.

Carpool is running smoothly and we ask that parents remain in your cars for pick-up if possible. Also, please do do not pass other cars in the carpool line.

I am personally inviting you to attend our Open House on September 6. You will get to visit your child’s classroom and receive very important information for the upcoming year and the first nine weeks of school. Mark your calendar for this important night. We have four special meeting times for this day:

Grades 3,4,5 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Grades K, 1, 2 5:00pm – 6:00 pm

Target Meeting for parents: 5:00 pm

Parent Phonics meeting (K,1, 2, parents) – 6:00 pm

We have a dedicated and caring group of ladies for our PTA officers this year: Amanda Chambers; President, Tera Martin; Vice-President, Jeanna Oberg and Georgette Clinton; Secretaries, and Karen Howell; Treasurer. They have already planned many events for our students for the upcoming year. We invite all parents to join our PTA at Open House and become active partners with us this year! We have an exciting year of learning ahead. We look forward to seeing you at Open House!

Compton was awarded a “Promising Practices” grant from Cobb County!! It was a competitive grant for schools in Cobb. Our talented grant writers, Pam Cain and Georgette Clinton won the prize for us! Our grant title: Rise Up . . . in School and in the Community! Our school and students will benefit and we are so proud and excited!!

Reading Coach

We are happy to report that we will be reading school-wide books of the month again this year! Talk to your child about August’s Book of the Month How to Heal a Broken Wing, A wonderful picture book about one young boy who noticed an injured bird and cared enough to take care of it. We discussed August’s character word of

the month which was sympathy. We defined it as being able to understand and share the feelings of another. Teachers shared real life examples, students shared examples and role-played scenarios showing their understanding of the concept and we connected our understand-ing to the sympathetic characters in our book of the month.

Parent Involvement

Hi! I’m Viktoria Henderson. Some of you may know me as the library clerk, but this year I will also be serving as parent liaison. For those of you who were not able to attend the room parent and volunteer informational meeting and would still like to help out at Compton this year, there will be make-up meeting September 27 at

9:00am. Stay tuned for details! We are currently working on our Title I Plan for the 2012-2013 school year. The Plan will be available for view on the website as soon as we are finished.

Cafeteria

We are celebrating Fruits and Vegetables in September! Fruits and vegetables come in terrific colors and flavors, and they have vitamins and minerals that we need to stay healthy and strong. Choose fruits and vegetables that are full of color,

including green broccoli, orange sweet potatoes, black beans, yellow bananas, and red toma-toes. Look for these items in the cafeteria. This nutritional moment was brought to you by your dedicated cafeteria staff.

Our Student Council election process is underway! Students received packets

on August 23rd

. Applications are due no later than September 7. Elections will be held on Friday, September 21

st. Good luck to all 3

rd, 4

th, and 5

th grade applicants!!!

Art Happenings We are off to a great start! The first project for the 2nd

– 5th

grade is a contest. Every year, our students create a poster for the Bus Safety Poster Contest. Last year we had two winners. We even had one state winner.

We are hoping we have a student who will place again in this contest. Kindergarten has been practicing drawing shapes and putting the shapes together to make a picture. First grade has been using line to create the feeling of movement in their art.

Before long, you will see information regarding an Art Fund-raiser. This is necessary due to budget cuts. We will be using Square 1 Art again as it has so many products to choose from. These items will be ready before Christmas break. These items make great gifts! The students love seeing their artwork made into something useful. It makes them feel so special.

Music Notes We have some very exciting activities planned for music for

September! 4th and 5

th grade students will be auditioning for chorus and begin

practicing on September 13th! In class, 4

th and 5

th graders will also begin learning how

to play the recorder. 2nd

and 3rd

graders will be practicing and preparing for their big PTA performance coming up soon in October! We’ll also be adding loads of fun

musical games to the ones we already play in music class! Kindergarten and 1st grade will be

continuing to practice our steady beat skills and learning how to play our instruments! I can’t wait for all of the students to see what all I have in store for them!

P.E. Pulse We have gotten off to a fabulous

start in Physical Education class here at Compton. All students have been working diligently in demon-strating RESPECT for themselves, others and our

equipment. It is very exciting to see how excited students are when they enter the gym.

As a reminder, your child needs to wear ‘safe shoes’ on their designated PE days. Unfortunately, if they are not appropriately dressed, they will not be able to ‘actively’ participate. It is perfectly fine for your child to bring a water bottle to PE class, as we will be getting our fitness on! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or call 770-222-3700 after 2:00PM.

Page 5 Media Matters

The Compton Library Media Center has been a flurry of activity already this year! Every student in the school has visited us for orientation, and we’ve already checked out over 2,000 books! We LOVE our Compton readers!

Our Spring Book Fair was such a success that we’re planning another one for the Fall. Mark your calendars for October 22-26, and stay tuned for details.

Advanced Learning Programs:

Parents, have you ever wondered about Cobb County’s gifted identification process? Karen Ricketts, Compton’s gifted education specialist, will be presenting a program

about gifted identification on Tuesday, October 9th from 6:00-6:30 P.M. in the Target classroom (Rm. 2.016). This presentation is intended for parents who would like to learn more about gifted eligibility and how students are identified for the Target program. Make plans to attend and get your questions answered.

Counselor’s Corner

I want to welcome all our new students to Compton Elementary School. I also want to welcome all our returning students back to another school year. Education is what we

want it to be. The more we apply ourselves, do our work and follow directions, the better we will perform academically and socially. I encourage all our students to be positive role models to other students by taking their school work seriously, getting along with their classmates, and always being the best that their parents and school staff want them to be.

The school counselor is here to help all students to perform up to and beyond their potential. Please encourage your students to feel comfortable to speak with the counselor whenever there is any challenge that may interfere with their academic performance at school.

Clinic Clips

Welcome back to school students and parents! The clinic cards are a crucial way of communicating to me any medical needs your child may have. The information is ALWAYS confidential. It will only be shared with your child’s teacher and myself to

better to care for your child. I will be sending letters home, only to students with medical condi-tions, asking for care plans to be completed and/or Authorization to Give Medication forms filled along with the necessary medicine. As a reminder, it is CCSD policy that the school does NOT provide the medicine. It must be provided by the parent. Medications are to be brought to school by the parent and/or another adult. Medications must remain in the pharmacy labeled container and/or over-the-counter container. You may download forms from www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice/studentsupport/studenthealth/.

If you have any questions you may call me at school, 770-222-3700. My hours are 8:15-2:45. I look forward to caring for your child this year. Thank you, Kathy Flowers, RN
