  • Urban Farm Technology

Big Box FarmThe Big Box Farm racks are designed to

provide plants with both a decent amount of growth area as well as the ability to stack the plants vertically.

LED spotlights provide an alternative solution to natural light in cases where

the environment has no access to direct sunlight.

Hydroponic planting allows for an alternative method of growth for plants. This method allows the plants to grow faster

    and have greater yields.

Students and community members collaborate together to learn about agriculture and business.

About 120,000 sqf of dedicated growing space will produce an average of 600,000 tons of fresh produce. That is enough to offset 1/10 the annual production of fresh produce for all of West Harlem.

The produce grown at the hydroponic farm is sold in an on-site market, and in local grocery stores around the area. A portion of the revenue goes to help maintain the classrooms and the farm.

Aquaponics is a food production system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. In normal aquaculture, excretions from the animals being raised can accumu-late in the water, increasing toxicity. In an aquaponic system, water from an aquaculture system is fed to a hydroponic system where the by-products are broken down by nitrogen-fixing bacteria into nitrates and nitrites, which are utilized by the plants as nutrients. The water is then recirculated back to the aquaculture system.

    LIVING SHORELINES

    BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARKApplicability

Living shorelines are suitable for most types of areas except in high wave energy environments where wave action and fast currents are typically too strong for vegetation to be established. In areas where fetch is less than 1 mile, vegetated living shorelines, such as fringe marshes, can survive. Beyond 1 mile of fetch, living shorelines typically require hard structural components, such as a rock sill or timber wall placed seaward of the marsh to function as a breakwater and reduce the forces from winds and waves. Living shorelines are best suited for areas with at to moderate slopes to allow for structural stability and a surface where vegetation can be estab-lished. Living shorelines are typically more space intensive than bulkheads. Creating a living shoreline where a bulkhead current exists requires either extend-ing the shoreline seaward, which is highly discouraged by environmental regulations concerned with new ll placed in the water, or taking away upland space fro m the site, which means less usable space on the site.

    street gridcommissioners plan of 1811

    subway stations& local geography

    population density& annual ridership

street mosaicmodern west harlem - 2014

The ows of the city are not only from day to day, week to week, or even year to year; the slow population ow of the city throughout its entire lifespan constantly changes the city. The original Commissioners Plan of 1811 for the city envisioned New York as a mostly uninterrupted grid up the entirety of the island, but the organic introduction of new programs and unexpected terrain warped the grid until it became what it is today.

  • The history of the culture of Harlem has been seeped in music, with the Harlem Renaissance being a catalyst for a heavy cultural upheaval in the art.

Icons such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday have been deeply tied to the history of Harlem and have shaped the future of the neighborhood.

A waterfront location lends itself to fantastic views and inventive architectural tectonics. With this, the auditorium can be rented out to other groups in order to build revenue for the site and the neighborhood.

The Archipelago CinemaDesigned by Ole Scheeren, this floating platform in Thailand supports the seating of attendees, while the screen is situated further out on the lagoon. The structure is built from puoyant pockets of wood bound by mosquito nets, a similar technique used by fishermen. Due to screen projection, this venue is used at night.

The Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln CenterHoused in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle in Manhattan, back of the stage is a giant glass wall that looks down Central Park South, with Central Park to the left and the sheer verticality of the city to the right. The view is one of the main attractors of this venue, aside from the extremely expensive restaurants and musical performances.

Recording Studios and Rehearsal SpacesAlong with the program of the Auditoriumand Performance Space, smaller, music-driven programs can be placed alongside it, such as Recording Studios, Rehearsal Spaces and Instrument Rental programs, so not only do people come to see music performed, they have the ability to create their own.

Battery Park City Ferry TerminalUsed by both NY Waterway and Liberty Water Taxi, the terminal opened in 2009 and showcases the largest mono-hull structure of its type in the world.

The Floating Garden Archipelago is a public works project in Paris along the Seine River, in addition to revitalizing thepedestrian walkway along the banks of the river. The project consists of five islands, Central Island, Meadow Island, Bird Island, Orchard Island and Mist Island. While not growing produce aside from Orchard Island where apple trees are grown, the project will sport indigenous grasses and plants to grow on the multiple islands.

Floating Gardens are floating layers of compost and dirt that are the structuralbase for plants that grow in them, but are thin enough so the roots from whatever isgrowing reaches the water underneath. Also, if the roots do not reach the water, the soil and/or compost is at least kept fully moistened by the water it floats on.While holding plants, these floating gardens are not suitable to walk upon unless structurally supported to hold persons, possibly on a frame that my be anchoredto the ground. This may add into a tectonic of floating architectural modules thatsupport other programs.

Tidal Power is an energy generation method similar in process to a hydroelectric dam. When tides come in and out, water from the river is forced through a channel which houses a turbine, turning it as the water is pushed through.

Another method of Tidal Power is creating an airpocket that water surges through, forcing the air out through a drected channel and turning a turbine as well. The tides at the site would be an ideal condition for this, providing energy for the site, reducing expenditures for the site. Depending on the energy produced, electricity could even be sold back to the grid, acting as even another revenue source for the site.

The generators would be the circumference of the floating portion of the site, being hidden by walkways or other topical programs.

SmartSponge is a product created by AbTech Industries, which consists of a foamy material that can be condensed and packaged into a large filtration system. The material absorbs hydrocarbons in the water and turns it into a solid, while letting water flow through unimpeded. The saturated SmartSponge could then be sold out of state to other areas which allow the burning of such in power plants, generating power for them, and revenue for the site.

The NY Waterway Ferries are what currently run between Edgewater Landing in New Jersey and Midtown - West 39th Street.

    NY Waterway FerryCapacity: 399 PassengersLength: 70Width: 40

The NY Water Taxies are small vessels that provide transportation to popular tourist destinations and shuttles to Ikea in Red Hook

Due to the waterfront properties of the site, the inclusion of a ferry station could prove relavent to the people of Harlem and for the rest of the site, as a ferry terminal would draw commuter traffic, therefore bringing attention to other amenities of the site. Servicing the Hudson River currently are The NYWaterway and NY Water Taxies. If the Marine Transfer Station was renovated as a ferry station, then it should be incorporated into this pre-existing line, so Harlem residents can take advantage of another mode of transportation to the city center. In addition to higher traffic, the revenue from ferry tickets will feed into the upkeep andproduction of the site.

The introduction of urban farming and growth may prove to be a lucrative focus for the site, as well as producing fresh fruit and vegetables for the local population and neighborhood.

Fairway is a nearby produce store that may utilize this freshly grown local produce, as it will be cheaper to buy, more efficient to procure and less hazardous to the environment than transporting it from out of city

Located next to Riverbank State Park, which is situated on the roof of the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant, the surrounding water environment, is prone to being saturated in pollutants from nearby sources. With the water surface being so near and possibly being accessible, cleanliness of the water is paramount in the health of the site, along with visitors, traffic and farming programs.

In addition to pollution, onsite energy production is a method for keeping both costs and the environmental impact of the site low.
