Also called eczema

Inflammation of the skin characterized by itchy erythematous crusty patches

Diagnosis: based on history, clinical exam and a skin biopsy (in difficult cases)

Treatment: Corticosteroids, topical emollients, antihistamines, immunosuppressants, ultraviolet light therapy

Tinea pedis

Fungal infection of the foot

Characterized by an itchy scaly rash

Treatment: Antifungal cream & shoe spray

Verrucae plantaris

Commonly called plantar wart

Caused by the human papillomavirus

Small lesions with a cauliflower like appearance

and central black petechiae

Treatment: Salicylic acid, cryosurgery, surgical

excision, laser therapy, immunotherapy

Melanoma

A form of skin cancer

Should be referred to a dermatologist, biopsied and treated accordingly

Bacterial endocarditis

Inflammation of the endocardium (inner tissue of

the heart) caused by infection

Symptoms: Splinter hemmorhages, Osler’s nodes,

Janeway lesions, Roth spots, fever & fatigue

Diagnosis: Confirmed via echocardiogram

Treatment: High-dose antibiotics, surgery

Beau’s Lines Yellow nail syndrome Terry’s nails(MI, trauma, Raynaud’s) (Respiratory probs) (Hepatic failure, DM, CHF)

Subungual melanoma Half & Half nails

(Cancer) (Renal failure)

Arterial/ischemic ulcers Caused by lack of blood flow to the capillary beds in the LE

Pressure damages the skin creating an open wound that’s difficult to close due to the poor perfusion of the tissues

Punched out appearance, painful, nonpalpable pulses

Treatment: Revascularization, HBOT, Skin graft

Venous ulcers Caused by increased pressure in the venous system of the LE

Mostly occur along the distal medial leg. May be painful.

Venous valves that prevent backflow of blood don’t function properly

Treatment: local wound care and compression

Decubitus/pressure ulcers Usually occur over a bony prominence and result from

repeated pressure, shear and/or friction applied to the skin
