COLOR RING GUIDES

The colors on our Color Rings are not one single color. They are the result of blending several colors together, by hand, to achieve the desired result. This is what gives our colors such a natural look.

The Color Rings are human hair and will oxidize over time. Keeping them in a dark place may maintain them longer. Even doing this, you WILL have to replace them. If the Color Rings are too old you will not get a good color match. Great Lengths cannot be held responsible for a mismatched color in this case. The colors on the Color Rings DO NOT correspond to a level system.

GL Apps are 5 pieces per pack.

ACCENT COLOR RING

Jewel Tones: Jewel Red, Jewel Blue, Jewel Green, Jewel Purple.

Crazy Colors: Red, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink, Turquoise, Magenta .

Pastel Colors: Purple, Pink, Green, Blue. Pastels will fade. This is due to the small quantity of color molecules. They will last 3 to 4 weeks if shampooed every day, 4 to 6 weeks if shampooed less often. Pastel pinks and yellows fade to a buttery blonde. Pastel greens and blues fade to a platinum blonde.

THE CONSULTATION PROCESS

The very first step towards a successful application requires a proper consultation. This is the moment where you can take that extra effort to get to know the client as well as discussing what may or may not be right for them. Whether introducing a client to the Great Lengths system or further educating an already interested client, the consultation is essential. During the consultation, explain how Great Lengths are used to help the client look and feel beautiful.

In every aspect your approach should be on the same level as a cosmetic surgeon. You can change a client’s look and attitude just as dramatically as a cosmetic surgeon.

The consultation must thoroughly cover every aspect of the upcoming application. The Five Steps to consultation are:

LISTEN: Listen and focus on the client’s desire, issues with her hair, lifestyle and expectations.

SHARE: Explain your vision for her. Let her know what is possible and impossible.

CLARIFY: Review all forms and desired look.

ASK PERMISSION: Does the client want to move forward with the service?

ACTION: Sign Deposit Agreement, Waiver and book appointment with 50% deposit.

In the consultation you will use all of the following to create a Consultation Packet. This can be a discussion or hand the client the forms. Remember you may get more honest answers if looking the client eye to eye. Therefore, you not may want to hand the forms to the client but go through it with them and write down the answers. Keeping in mind that the Client’s head tells you everything you need to know. Their head is your “Master Blue Print”.

Your blueprint will let you know:

1. The color or colors needed

2. The length or lengths needed.

3. The number of GL Apps needed for the application.

4. The size of GL Apps needed. Full GL App or cut in half.

5. Application and placement of the GL Apps on the head.

Be honest with the client. Only recommend GL Apps when you are sure the results will be satisfactory.

Do not ever talk number of GL Apps. You are selling and presenting a “Complete Look”. If you give a client this information she will think she can dictate to you how to accomplish the service or look. The client should not determine what is needed.

Checklist of supplies needed for the consultation:

1. Folder or packet of forms

2. Tape Measure

3. Color rings

4. GL Apps Computer

Do not assume your client knows anything about wearing or caring for extensions.

You must tell them everything they need to know

THINGS TO CONSIDER DURING THE CONSULTATION

Harmonizing the Lengths

To achieve the most natural looking results, the client’s own hair and the GL Apps are carefully blended in the finished cut. You must consider the client’s preexisting hair cut and whether or not you need to pre-cut the natural hair or blend it into the additions after the service is complete. The goal is to create a Seamless blend. A full head lengthening is considered applying GL Apps from the nape to the parietal bone. All other services are either in a specific place or zone of the head.

For a lengthening service, it is recommended that the additions be applied to hair that has layered or texturized internal lengths. This produces better blending between the GL Apps and a client’s own hair. Any time you are going to cut or texturize the client’s natural hair TELL THE CLIENT AHEAD OF TIME.

It is recommended that the client’s hair be approximately 5 to 6 inches long for a full head lengthening and no less than 3 to 4 inches long for all other services. You need to have enough hair to cover the GL Apps.

A good rule to follow: Double the length on top equals the length added for the most natural look.

There will be 3 times when you will cut the natural hair when lengthening the hair. Each of the above pictures corresponds with the suggestions below:

1. Cut, such as a “dusting”, the natural hair if needed.

2. Texturize natural blunt hair in a sub-section if needed. You will cut vertical into the natural hair nevercut horizontally into the hair with texturizing shears.

3. Slightly layer short, medium or long one length hair.

How far should you cut into the natural hair in a subsection? ½ to ¾ inch only

Why would you not want to cut any deeper into the hair? Thins out the natural hair too much

All Text & Imagery © Great Lengths USA

You may have to pre-cut the Great Lengths strands. If the GL Apps you received are longer thenNeeded, pre-cut them to the correct length. During the haircut if you have attached the longer length GL Apps and then cut them the client may perceive this as money wasted or her hair is shorter than wanted. If left longer the client may want to keep the longer length but has not been charged appropriately.

ZONES

There are 3 Zones of color you will want to consider.

• Zone 1 - The Top of the head. This is the top to parietal.

• Zone 2 - The Middle of the head. This is from the parietal to the cheek or chin.

• Zone 3 – The Bottom of the head. This is from the cheek or chin to the bottom of the hair.

What Zone are you going to be adding to the bottom length? This is what you will need to consider in your consultation.

There may be a time when the client may have to wait for GL Apps: If the natural hair is less than 3 inches. There may be times when a client may not be able to receive the service:

1. The client is not willing to keep oily products off of the attachment site.

2. Excessively curly hair never worn straight.

3. Excessively thin hair.

There may be a time when you will have to perform an extra service. This would occur during shampooing before the application and is due to hard water. Use a de-mineralizing treatment the day of the service before you shampoo.

Tip:You may preplan according to the desired result and use shorter strands in the exterior and longer strands in the interior. The service therefore reflects the finished haircut. This is essential if creating a one length bob look or if you need the front sides longer or even with the back. If you are creating a layered look it may be more effective for the overall look to apply the strands in the same length.

HOME CARE MAINTENANCE

1. Do not shampoo for two days. Always wash your hair with your head back and not tilted forward. Never dry with ascrubbing action, instead wrap with a towel to absorb water.

2. The attachment site must be dried any time it is wet. Always dry the attachment site before applying any tension tothe hair. If the attachment site is not dried they can stretch or pull down especially when combing or blow drying.

3. Do not apply conditioner on GL Apps attachment site, apply to ends only. Do not apply oily shampoos, silicones, oilsor oily styling products directly on the attachment site.

4. No ponytails tight or high on the head.

5. If you do wear a ponytail and the GL Apps turn slightly you can hold the GL App gently down when blow drying andthey will lie down.

6. Do not go to bed and leave the hair wet.

7. Activities taking place in a constant damp environment such as aerobics, steam baths or saunas, may lessen thelongevity of the GL Apps service. Precautions should be taken to avoid these conditions being repeated.

8. Sea water and pools can cause GL Apps slippage due to the constant damp environment. To minimize the GL Appshair from absorbing sea water or pool chemicals, wet the hair completely and apply a Great Lengths conditioner tothe ENDS ONLY. After swimming, shampoo and blow dry the attachment site.

9. Curling irons, flatirons and hot rollers may be used, but must be kept an adequate distance from the GL Appsapproximately 1 ½ inches from the attachment site. Do not use a hot blow dryer on the attachment site, mediumheat only. Do not apply excessive tension to the GL Apps when drying.

10. Book your next appointment before leaving. This will keep your reattachments on schedule.

Preparation

PREPARING THE HAIR

Preparing the client’s hair is the most important step the day of the GL Apps application. If the hair is incorrectly prepped there is the liability of having the GL Apps sliding off of the hair. You will have doubled your work to remedy the situation.

There are 3 steps to prepping the hair:

1. Wash the hair three times with Great Lengths Clean Remover Shampoo. This is a clarifying shampoo that removes dirt, oils and build up that would interfere with the attachment. The hair must be SQUEAKY CLEAN.

• DON’T condition or use product in the client’s hair after it has been shampooed.

2. Rinse with cool water to allow the cuticle to close and make the hair easier to comb.

3. Blow dry completely, and use a cool setting to nish. This a blow dry not a blow out. It is essential that you do not disrupt any natural hair growth pattern.

4. For ease of application and more precise placement the clients hair should be at ironed before GL Apps are applied. Do not over straighten just smooth the clients natural hair. Do not add a bump at the base.

• DON’T apply to even slightly damp hair.

• DON’T use an extremely hot atiron as the heat changes the physical shape of the hair and it may not attach correctly. 350 degrees is the highest temperature you will use.

• DON’T use a atiron with product buildup this will coat the client’s hair and the GL Apps and will inhibit the attachment process.

• DON’T change or force the hair from its natural growth pattern while drying.

• DON’T let the client shampoo their own hair.

• DO send home a clarifying shampoo if the client has a lot of product build up. Ask the client to use it

every day for 3 days before the service. You still must shampoo 3 times the day of the service.

• DO shampoo as many times as needed to get the hair squeaky clean.

• DO at iron the Client’s hair before applying.

PARTING SECTIONS AND SUBSECTIONS OF THE CLIENT’S HEAD

Sectioning or parting the hair serves as a blueprint for your finished style and allows control and precision as you proceed through the service. Sections are always the same but you may only section an area as needed for different applications.

The partings and subsections MUST be straight, DO NOT follow the curve of the head anywhere you are working. The client’s head MUST be straight up when making part lines. It is a good idea to step back, arms length away, to check your parting and your subsection parts.

Partings:

Subsections:

A subsection refers to the spacing in the parted sections. The Great Lengths strands are added in the subsections.

How to determine the number of subsections:

1. Determine the density of the natural hair all over. Determine where it is densest.

2. How many of the GL Apps needed to create a seamless blend.

3. Size of the nape hairline to the top of the ear.

4. How far from the nape hairline you will need to start the 1st row.

5. How many subsections will fit in the nape.

6. How much you will need for a veil of hair between rows.

APPLICATION OF THE GL APPS

The Eight Rules of Application

1. GL Apps must be pressed into the hair at the natural fall and not pulled into the attachment from asection wider than the width of the App.

2. GL Apps must always be placed ¼” away from the scalp. Placing it to close to the scalp will cause itto buckle.

3. Stand directly behind where you are placing the GL Apps and work perpendicular to the directionof the client’s natural hair growth at the point of attachment. This will avoid over direction ormisalignment of the GL Apps placement.

4. Always make sure that there is enough hair in your subsection to completely cover both the front andbackside of the GL Apps attachment tab.

5. Do not apply more GL Apps than the client’s hair density and head size, when considering perimeterlimitations, allow.

6. Plan ahead and schedule a re-taping service every 4 to 6 weeks. It’s recommended that new GL Appsbe applied after 3 re-taping services have been performed using the clients existing set.

7. Always allow enough hair around the perimeter to conceal the GL Apps attachment. Generally, this is1” to 2” of perimeter hair.

Nape: (1 ½ inch- 2 inches) Sides: (1 ¼- 1 ½ inch) From the Part (1 inch).

8. For a secure attachment make sure that both sides of the GL Apps adhesive tab are completelycovered by the clients natural hair and the correct amount of pressure is used when pressing themtogether.

APPLICATION STEPS

1. Part the first subsection in the nape. Flat iron the natural hair in each sub- section as you part it. Theperimeter is 1 ½ to 2 inches from the nape.

2. Remove the GL App from the card. Remove ONE protective film from the GL App at a time.

DO NOT TOUCH THE TAPE AREA AT ANY TIME. IF YOU DO THE GL APP WILL NOT ADHERE PROPERLY.

3. Starting from the center back of the head. Hold the natural hair smooth and taut against the head.

Apply the GL App ¼ inch from the scalp then press with a firm downward pressure to the hair. Applyyour next GL App allowing ¼ inch between each GL App. You can go either direction from the centerto finish the row. DO NOT REMOVE TOP TAPE.

4. When you are finished with the row slice and clip out enough natural hair to cover the top of the GLApp. Check the density and if needed add more hair from the top. Flat iron the natural hair that isready to be laid down on the GL App. Remove the top protective film, then lay the natural hair onthat GL App holding the hair straight and taut as you lay it down. Press the hair with a firm downwardmotion onto the GL App. Continue in this manner for the rest of the row. Only apply the top hair to oneGL App at a time.

5. Gently lift the all of the attachments from the underneath away from the scalp and work free any loosehairs then clip up.

6. Line up the GL Apps Safety Band with the applied GL App. Attach then press gently to the underneathof the GL App. If you press too firmly you may create a buckle. Drop down each GL App after you haveapplied the GL Apps Safety Band.

7. When the row is finished you will take your GL Apps Connection Tool holding with the naturaldownward flow of the natural hair and squeeze 3-4 times to each GL App. Moderate pressure isnecessary to meld the hair into the GL App.

8. Part your next subsection and flat iron.

9. Brick lay your GL App and attach as above. Bricklaying the GL Apps allows for more of a seamlessblend.

10. Step 10: Finish rows as needed.

CUTTING GL APPS

When cutting the GL Apps it is important to use soft cutting techniques for dry hair. This is a very visual way of cutting.

Tools that you will use are your straight shears, texturizing/blending shears (40 teeth or more) and razor.

After the application is complete shake the client’s hair out of the GL App. Where the natural hair ends is where you will use a sliding or skimming technique down the surface of the GL App with either a shear or razor. It is important remember to blend the GL Apps and the natural hair when using these methods. If you cut completely through the GL App it will create a “ledge effect.” This effect is difficult to blend.

Remember the goal is a seamless blend

Tips for the GL Apps:

1. You may need to remove a slight amount of density before attaching. This may be necessary if you arevolumizing for a better blend with the natural hair or for a more textured look in your cut.

• If pre- texturizing you can point cut slightly in the GL App with a razor.

• When removing density “check as you cut.” This is a small amount of hair you are removing. Youdo not want to over thin the GL App.

2. Point cutting into the ends allows you to blend into the natural hair better when layering.

3. When using your razor, as soon as you feel it dragging or pulling replace the blade.

If you are removing some density from the GL Apps before applying keep the texturing in the lower part of the GL App. You do not want to go any higher than half of the length of the GL App you are applying.

REMOVAL

You must remove the GL Apps from one side to the other. The GL Apps can be removed immediately if needed.

Removal Steps:

1. Spray the top of the GL App liberally with the GL Apps Disconnecting Spray. Rub the top area witha towel until client’s hair is loose from the GL App. Apply more GL Apps Disconnecting Spray asneeded. After the hair is loosened from the GL App take off the GL App. As needed reapply GL AppsDisconnecting Spray to Safety Band then remove it from the client’s hair.

TIP: You can cut the attached fallen hairs that are above the tape area.

Remove all the GL Apps row by row. Apply the GL Apps in the corresponding row of your GL Apps Memory Card.

2. Apply Great Lengths Protector Instant Spray to the tacky areas and down the strand. Then comb withextra fine tooth comb to remove excess adhesive and loose hairs.

3. Shampoo 3 times, more if needed, with Great Lengths Clean Remover Preparation Shampoo. Whenshampooing make sure you remove all adhesive from the reattachment area. Dry the hair completely.

4. Re-apply

RE-APPLICATION

Make sure you leave the same distance from the perimeter as the first application and re-apply in the same area of the head vertically. This prevents the hair from being shorter

Re-Application Steps:

1. Step 1: Apply and press the GL Apps Reconnecting Tape to the App in the first row that is facing youon the GL Apps Memory Card. DO NOT TOUCH THE TAPE.

2. Step 2: Remove the GL App from your GL Apps Memory Card turn over and apply GL AppsReconnecting Tape to the second side.

TIP: Press the tape FIRMLY to the GL App once both sides are attached.

3. Step 3: Remove the protective film from the GL App and apply to the natural hair. Follow all the stepsjust as you did with the first application. Keep track of which side was on the hair when you took it off.

4. Step 4: Finish all your rows as above

RE-APPLICATION (CONT.)

TIPS:
