NOTAN
NOTAN
Dark &
Light Notan is a Japanese art concept that loosely
translates to ”Dark Light Harmony”. It focuses on the play between dark and light
values within a work of art. The concept of Notan can be found in
paintings, photographs, prints, and cut paper.

The idea of Notan is rooted in the ancient Eastern symbol of the Yin and Yang, which consists of mirror images: one white and one black, revolving around
a point of equilibrium.
In the Yin and Yang symbol, and in Notan, opposites compliment, they do not conflict. Neither seeks to
negate or dominate the other, only to relate in harmony.
The interaction or “harmony” between light and dark
shapes is the most essential component of a Notan
drawing.
Ideally, the finished artwork should be 50% light and 50%
dark creating equilibrium and balance.
To make
Notan, equal
emphasis
must be
placed on
opposing
light and
dark shapes.
This is a variation
of the Yin-Yang
that symbolizes
the horizon with
a rising and
setting sun.
YIN-YANG
Ancient symbol of
dual forces held in
unity.
YANG (black)
represents the active
or masculine.
YIN (white)
represents the
passive or feminine.

Abstract = NOT REALISTIC
Abstract art uses simplified shapes
Realistic vs.
Abstract
Sometimes abstract art refers to something in the real world…..
and sometimes it doesn’t…
Composition The way you
divide & organize the space
Asymmetrical Balance = Not the same on both sides but still
balanced.
Symmetrical Balance = same on both sides. Mirror image.
Your Project Create a Notan Design inspired by ANYTHING.
break the object down
into SIMPLIFIED or ABSTRACT
shapes!
Find your inspiration, then…
Remember: When you draw
an abstract image, reduce it to the most
basic elements (Iines, shapes, spaces, etc).
Avoid cutting the corners if possible! If you choose to
cut from the corner, it has to
flip to one side only.
What do you see in these
Notan examples?
ASYMMETRICAL
or
SYMMETRICAL
Balance?
Do you know what MOVIE
