“ Amper is a leader in information systems development and integral solutions for civilian and military communications”

• Amper is committed to dual technology for civilian and military applications. the C4ISR systems are command control and telecommunications systems, computer systems, and intelligence, surveillance and recognition systems.

• Amper’s high level of development of encryption products like the EP-430 family, a series of products that meet all the needs of the Spanish administration, has allowed Amper to participate in international tenders.

• this company has displayed an impressive effort to develop software for the Swiss Army that, apart from its own command and control system, includes simulation tools, battle management and training and war gaming.

From the front porch to border surveillance

The history of Amper is filled with continuous contextual and technological adaptations. Founded in 1956, the company initially produced automatic doors but since has changed direction and today is the leader in the design and implementation of information systems and solutions for military and civilian communications. Listed in the stock market since 1986, it has been characterized as a company that makes futuristic visions a way of life.

Even though this company does businesses in over 20 countries, its products and services are available in eight countries. Among its successful cases: the implementation of IP services in Brazil through Medidata; the development of the first multiservice network of IP convergence for the Spanish airport “El Prat” in Barcelona; the furnishing of command and control systems for the Swiss Army; the setting-up of emergency management systems in Argentina, Mexico and France; and the implementation of surveillance and border control systems in Serbie and Estonia, which take advantage of the experience derived of Amper’s work with the Spanish Civil Guard in the deployment of the Integrated External Surveillance (SIVE) system on more than 1000 km of the Spanish coast.

Amper is a leader in its three business lines: defense, telecom and homeland security. This is because at this company, the concept of resistance to change is not even taken into consideration. In fact, Amper managed to reinvent itself after Telefonica purchased it in 1982. Then again, it experienced a radical conversion due to the liberalization of the telecommunications market in the 90s. In order to adapt to future changes, the company began an expansion process that continues even today: namely, constantly refining its strategy for competing in the global market from which it realizes one-third of its sales.

Being at the technological forefront is Amper’s motto, and therefore, it invested €11.1 million in R&D in 2008 alone, making Amper the fifth-largest Spanish company in terms of R&D investment per employee. This explains the strong support of international organizations like GLOBE – funded by the European Commission. Through GLOBE, Amper is in charge of unregulated aspects of the the European integrated border system. Through the INTEGRA project, Amper conducts research studies and develops technologies for migration management. And alongside TECAMIS+ – funded by the Spanish Industry Department – the company works on the improvement of crisis management in complex scenarios.

The innovative phase of Amper reflects their commitment to dual technology systems, which are equally applicable in both civil and military spheres. SIGECRA is an example of this technology: it is an emergency management scheme based on command and control architectures for defense, which facilitates the cooperation between different security forces, assistance organizations and civil protection services. With its constant innovation, Amper continues its unstoppable climb to the apex of critical communications engineering.

Green tech to save the planet

The Spanish company Crambo is the first in the world to unite GPS with ecology. Its revolutionary navigator, the Vexia Econav, works as a private teacher of eco-driving. It not only shows the way to a destination, then it also advises the driver how to consume and contaminate less. The user selects his vehicle out of the over 11,000 models in the Vexia Econav’s database and creates his own profile. Once the profile has been created, the tool will indicate which gear to use, when to accelerate or decelerate, and other suggestions as well.

Vexia’s hard work on innovation has won this company prestigious international awards like the European Green Excellence Award and the Golden Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. The Guardian has referred to this technology as “truly intelligent,” and The European Commission has created a project to implement this technology as Sustainable Energy Europe Econav’s Official Partner. Nevertheless, the best recognition is that provided by the market, and in this sense, the Spanish GPS already shares the shelf with products from leading brands in retail chains across the UK and Ireland, two countries where Vexia has been available since December 2009. It is expected to expand into countries like Germany and Portugal in 2010.

Vexia Econav differentiates itself from the two worldwide leading brands in two aspects: its price and its eco-friendliness. As a matter of fact, a car owner can save up to 30% in fuel costs and reduce his or her emission by one ton of carbon dioxide per year according to tests performed by European experts and at Crambo Labs. Because of these benefits, more and more drivers around the world are choosing Vexia for its high added value compared to other more popular brands.

Econav is the flagship product of Crambo, but it is not the only one. Another major innovation worldwide has been the technology “Más puntos menos multas” (More points less fines) applied to navigators, which for the time being is offered in the Spanish market. This technology lets the driver know how much a fine would be and the number of points he can lose if he exceeds the speed limit of his current road. In this case, Econav ensures both the safety and the economic well-being of the driver.

The firm has diversified its product portfolio, even including the audiovisual sector. And most importantly, it never stops innovating. Under the name Crambo Labs, its R&D department is formed by engineers, graduates and visionaries of various nationalities whose sole function is to identify opportunities in developing new and more intuitive, user-friendly products. From this small but successful group emerges a significant percentage of Spanish patents – 0.5% in 2008 – making it a clear leader of technological products in the European Union. Crambo’s products provide a high social value, especially in terms of sustainability. To sum up, technology designed to save the planet.

“ Crambo’s Vexia Econav GPS is contending at the same level as the best brands in retail chains across the UK and Ireland”

• Vexia Econav is the first navigator in the world to include information on fuel consumption and to promote eco-driving.

• Vexia radar Plus: with this technology, the driver can visualize fixed and mobile radars on his side of the road, regardless of having assigned a destination or not.

• the application More points less fines warns the driver in real time about how much a fine would be and how many points he could lose if he exceeds the speed limit.

A space odyssey

The brain-computer that will direct the first phase in the new NASA project to take a man to the moon thinks and speaks in Spanish. Supported by a strong commitment to technological innovation and development, the Madrilenian company GMV has added its name to the aerospace hall of fame when it was chosen by the North American Space Agency to direct the key element in the first great moon mission after the Apollo Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Program.

This will be a new space odyssey in which GMV will be responsible for manufacturing and “flying” the Mission Planning System, which is the brain-computer that will control all the satellite’s activities from Earth. It is the Flexplan, a space device completely developed in Spain that had been previously chosen by operators from the European Space Agency and EUMETSAT (European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites). This device will enable the analysis of lunar cartography in 3D, the measurement of surface radiation and the electromagnetic field of the moon, and other scientific programs that will guarantee a safe and successful return of man to the moon.

The standard-bearer of the Made in Spain technology for 25 years, GMV already enjoyed a prestigious reputation in the aerospace and defense industries when NASA reached out to it for assistance. Founded in 1985, it soon became one of the largest satellite operators that also worked in sectors such as aeronautics, defense, health, security, transportation, telecommunication and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) for companies and public administrations.

During the 90s, the company was a pioneer in fields such as Internet and satellite navigation applications, developing the first fleet management and localization GPS system – at that time, this kind of technology was at a very early stage of development. GMV installed the first firewall system and implemented the first SMS-Internet gateway in Spain.

Currently, it provides maintenance and update services to the three main Spanish telephone message operators. GMV is a significant national model in the development of Internet portals and telematics systems for Spanish public administrations in order to improve citizens’ services and quality of life. An example of this is the Unified Management System of the Regional Council of Castilla y León a services platform that includes the most important portals of the region, which gives citizens easy access to relevant community information such as Andalusian Autonomous Government contact information, the electronic ID portal and the Instituto Cervantes Web among others. GMV sets the standard for computer security; it is an active partner of the central administration and of the largest banks in the country. In addition, it takes part in important European initiatives such as the R&D Madeira project based on the creation of a secure European Internet. Its function as an international coordinator earned this company the Celtic Excellence Award.

Nowadays, this small aerospace engineering company has become a group corporation with over 1,100 employees and over €91 million annual income. It operates in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Poland, the United States, the Republic of Korea and Malaysia, and it is constantly expanding. With this strategy based on the diversification of markets and research, there are no borders for GMV.

etic solutions

The first guardian on the Internet

Panda Security was founded in 1990 in Bilbao (Spain) as Panda Software. Two decades later, it has become one of the largest security companies worldwide with thousands of clients in over 200 countries and products in 23 different languages.

Panda’s internationalization plan is based on the motto “think global, act local” leading to their consolidation in the five continents through an affiliates and franchise model.

Their key to success is their “first mover advantage” in setting and implementing innovative trends in the sector. Panda was the first company to apply the 24/7 customer service in 1997, and in that same year, Panda launched to market the first product that cleaned e-mails from viruses regardless of their format. It was also the first company in the world to send malware daily updates in 1998, and first in offering behavior reports –Tecnologías TruPrevent – in 2004, where it was not necessary to know if a file was a virus, but how the file behaved and how it could be detected.

Today, Panda Security is a well-known pioneer in security technologies based on “cloud security”, a revolutionary new security model based on Collective Intelligence, an automatic system that detects, analyzes, protects and classifies the 55,000 new viruses that appear on the Internet every six minutes without affecting the speed and functionality of the computer.

The growth strategy of Panda Security has always been directly linked to its internalization policy. It began by attending the CeBIT in 1996, and France, The United States and China were the first steps in the path that later opened to the five continents.

The Grupo Panda has near 1,500 employees throughout the world and headquartes in over 50 countries. That is the most important asset of the company. The staff is young, – the average age is 23 – and multicultural.

Ever since its foundation, Panda Security reinvests a high percentage of its earnings, up to 30%, in R&D – positioning as global leaders in security software development. The new technologies and products are designed in Spain.

Panda is a company that keeps growing in international markets and that is not infected by the “crisis virus” because they have the best vaccine.

“ Panda was the first company to apply the 24/7 customer service in 1997. It was also the first company in the world to send malware daily updates. in addition, it began to offer behavior reports – TruPrevent Technologies – in 2004, cloud-analysis technology in 2007 and it was the first to launch cloud-security in 2009”

REALIA TECHNOLOGIES, (REALSEC)Tel.: (+34) 91 449 03 30 [email protected] www.realsec.comC/ Orense, 6828020 Madrid

The best-kept secret

There are only two companies with cryptographic systems in the world certified as FIPS 40-2 Level 3 and Common Criteria EAL4+; two of the most important international certifications. One of these companies is the Spanish Realia Technologies, better known as Realsec.

Founded in Madrid at the beginning of the 21st Century, Realsec offers high-level cryptographic security hardware and software solutions for large companies, especially banks and governments that require strict confidentiality. These solutions are called HSM (Security Modules Hardware) and are designed to generate, store and protect private codes.

Nearly 30 % of their turnover comes from the international market. Its success relies on not only offering cryptographic products like its competitors do, but also on developing its own technology, HSM solutions and software applications, which are all integrated into a plug & play server.

Realsec’s 18 employees are devoted to innovating and developing exclusive and advanced technologies. They work alongside universities and technology centers throughout the world every day, resulting in 80% of the products they sell having been developed in-house.

Internationalization has been a logical consequence of Realsec’s evolution. In 2007, the company began its expansion outside Spain, and by 2009, it had opened commercial offices in Mexico City and Atlanta (US). The third office is scheduled to open in Brazil in 2010. Realsec’s international strategy is aimed at the US market and it has partnered with companies in Mexico, United States, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay and Panama that look after Realsec’s best interests.

The HSBC bank, one of the company’s main clients, has chosen the Cryptosec RKL solution to manage 15,000 ATMs in Latin America. This British financial entity has also adapted this solution for implementation in other areas, which opens a great possibility to grow in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Cryptosec RKL has caught the attention of other financial entities like Banco Central de Reservas of Peru, Itaú and Ripley banks – the most important banks in Chile – and the Banca Comercial Romana, owned by Erste Bank Austria. All of these corporations have preferred the Spanish solutions over those offered by multinationals such as Hewlett Packard, NCR, Thales, Wincor or ACI Worldwide. There are no secrets in Realsec’s success; it is all about technology and innovation as its reason for being.

Security to the maximum

Secuware guarantees security thanks to the software it develops. It has achieved a leading position in the world market where it can look in the eye of the top companies from the field. This company’s team created its first antivirus software in 1988 and has been adding advancements to information society since then. Proof of this statement was the creation of the second most downloaded antivirus software in the second half of the ‘90s by its R&D team; this software was later sold to McAfee. Furthermore, in 1999 it created Crypt2000, a ciphering standard for the Ministry of Defense and NATO which became indispensable for complying with the Data Protection Law, securing hundreds of thousands of computers belonging to the public administration.

A significant contribution to the security software industry has been the development of Secuware Security Framework (SSF), the first security operating system in the world, which has been exported to many countries and was given the 2005 award for the most innovative product – successfully shielding against viruses, trojans and other malicious codes. The modular SFF suite has become one of the pillars of this Spanish company. Secuware is already working on new versions for mobile phones, pocket computers and other systems such as Linux. SSF has made Windows the only safe environment for using the electronic IDs. This has provided Secuware alliances with the leading international computer manufacturers.

Secuware continues to grow, both at a local and at an international level, with branches and partners all over the world with whom it has signed technological alliances and public administrations with which it has collaborated on R&D projects. It presides over the Spanish Security Platform for the coordination of Spanish companies in the VII European Framework Program. Secuware spends approximately one third of its revenue on innovation and development, guided by the goals of reliability, transparency and cost reduction. It has been awarded several prizes and develops solutions for integrated security and multilevel plans, confidentiality protection, PC performance optimization, password management as well as other areas related to reliability in the use of computers in organizations. It also has solutions for the event of loss or theft through prevention and data recovery solutions. Secuware enables new technologies to reach areas such as healthcare, justice and education, promoting information society. Secuware is synonymous with computer efficiency and lays the foundations for the Internet to be a secure network for end users to effectively and efficiently interact and transact online.

“ Secuware has created SSF, the first security operating system in the world and actively pursues the highest level of computer reliability and efficiency”

• Secuware’s california branch created, in the second half of the ‘90s, the second most downloaded antivirus software

S21sec, tomorrow’s digital security, today

Nowadays, making bank transaction online has become very common and secure in western societies, but it is not free from risks. In Spain alone, there are over 1,500 cases of phishing reported by financial entities every year. Phishing is a new type of online crime aimed at obtaining the personal information of users by misleading them.

Companies like the Spanish S21sec prevent such crime. This young firm was founded in 2000 in San Sebastián, Spain, and provides 24/7 digital security services to countries around the world from its offices in London, Mexico City, Monterrey, Houston, Miami and in several Spanish cities.

Among S21sec’s clients are 80 financial entities from around the globe. Banks and other corporations trust this Iberian firm due to its products to prevent bank information theft, corporate espionage, inherent risks with critical infrastructure and geo-political threats.

The effectiveness of S21sec’s services is evident in that three out of four companies listed at the IBEX 35 stock market and two out of ten listed at the Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 have at least one anti-fraud application from this company. Even public administrations and security forces from a number of countries use these applications. Microsoft itself has included the black list of fraud generated by S21sec in their Internet Explorer’s filter.

S21sec’s star product is called Bitacora, a platform to manage and prevent corporate security risks that has been included in NATO’s technological solutions catalogue. This solution enables access to and management of valuable information scattered throughout an organization in a wide range of formats, making it impossible to gather and control manually.

The so-called (Digital Surveillance Service) provided by S21sec has countless applications that include personnel selection at organizations, information leak control, follow up of news related to directors or high executives to protect their images and reputations, and the protection of the company, the products, the brands and the services from the emerging threats on the Web.

S21sec reinvests 25% of its annual budget in R&D, keeping the company at the forefront of technology in its sector. Following that objective, this Spanish firm has created a European Digital Security R&D Center that is formed by 85 professionals who assist companies and institutions around the world. This is S21sec’s big secret, and it is an expert in keeping secrets.

One step ahead in Sanitary Information Systems

Técnicas Competitivas (TCSA) was founded in 1990 with 100% Spanish capital and is dedicated to providing services and developing solutions using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the public administration, health, telecommunication, and port sectors.

Among TCSA’s solutions, the most impressive are those developed for the Canary Health Service (Canary Government) that enable the management of the entire health center including accessing patients’ medical histories, exchanging information between primary and specialized care, making appointments and writing electronic prescriptions. In addition to this project, TCSA has carried out several national R&D projects in the telemedicine field sponsored by the Spanish Ministries of Industry and Science and Technology and they expect to be exported to other countries.

Moreover, TCSA has a significant presence in the port sector. This Spanish company designed software specifically for real-time container location tracking, both inside and outside the port. It is a pioneer system developed to connect the different phases in a supply chain including internal processes like billing, accounting and maintenance, and external processes that involve customs, longshoremen and other operators that handle goods.

TCSA also focuses on the development of e-governance solutions for public administration that facilitate online access to public services for citizens and improve the efficiency of their internal management.

TCSA’s recent participation in the operation, deployment and maintenance of the Tetra networks marks the beginning of its activity in the mobile radio communications sector for security and emergency networks.

“There is no technology company that can do everything by itself,” and that is why TCSA has partnered with other firms in Public Administration bids. Currently, TCSA has contracts with Teltronic S.A., Sampol and Intecna Soluciones, S.L. Its relationships with universities, clusters and institutes of science and technology form part of their day-to-day operation.

Virtualware

A three dimensional picasso

The new technologies have revolutionized the ways to travel. In order to visit a museum or go for a walk in a historic city, it is no longer necessary to catch a plane. In the 21st Century, virtual reality has put the whole world within arm’s length of anyone, anywhere.

And a Spanish company, Virtualware 2007, has contributed to this revolution. Founded in 2004, it reached the international market six years later through its innovative vision and commitment. Virtualware’s work is based on the hypothesis that 3D reconstruction applied to national heritage is an effective marketing tool to be unleashed.

Virtualware’s great leap forward was a result of its most emblematic work; the virtual replica of the Cave of Santimañe, a cave that is over 9000 years old situated in the province of Guipúzcoa, in the north of Spain. After closing it to the public for conservation reasons, the engineers of Virtualware designed customized virtual reality software that enabled the visitors to see and experience the most important areas of the cave in very high definition images. It took seven months of work to go back to the Paleolithic times and collect 6000 millions of dots of information from 1500 digital HD photos, and 200 laser scanning sessions.

However this work was not what caught the attention of the experts in national heritage and technology throughout the world. Instead, they noticed an increase in the number of visitors after its virtual opening in the summer of 2008. This surge in visitors brought Cave of Santimañe international press and a mention by UNESCO’s on World Heritage.

Santimañe is Virtualware’s most popular project, but it is not the only one. There are 92 other virtual reality initiatives in process that go from marketing and urban planning to civil works and infrastructures, to other projects related to adding value to national heritage and tourism.

Virtualware’s success is due to various factors. First of all, there was the intuition of the three founding partners who discovered the great potential of virtual reality as a differentiation factor and powerful communication resource. Afterwards, the team was committed to being a leader in this sector, and nowadays an international vocation that allows them to contact with companies in new countries such as China and public organizations like CULTNAT. They have also taken part in international tenders on high profile projects such as Masdar in Abu-Dhabi.

The world is in Virtualware’s hands.

• Virtualware collaborates in the development of projects alongside national technology centers such as Labein, Vicomtech and University of Deusto and it also participates in international innovation projects with companies like Philips.

WIRELESS MUNDITel.: (+34) 91 803 92 [email protected] de Valdecarrizo, 11 - Oficina 22028760 Tres CantosMadrid

The power of an emerging technology

Six years in the market, two awards from the international press for being the best manufacturer of emerging technologies in 2009, an aggressive R&D strategy which requires 75% of the company’s resources, a board of directors formed by international leaders who aim for international markets and, above all, COMMS MUNDI, a successful integrated-solutions product that has revolutionized the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

All that is, in general terms, the brilliant CV of Wireless Mundi, a Madrid-based back-office solutions startup founded at the beginning of 2004 that focuses on traffic control, security and other wireless network services.

Only a year and a half after its foundation, Wireless Mundi had a drastic turn in its focus when it started to work on the development of a new product with high market potential: the COMMS MUNDI.

COMMS MUNDI is the most complete integrated-solutions software for ICT. Some of the characteristics that make this software successful are that it runs on any type of server/PC and that users download it from the Internet and can complete the installation process in only 30 minutes. Once the program has been installed, it is ready to be setup and can replace the equivalent of up to three racks of ICT equipment.

This software has multiple functions organized into eleven modules that can be activated through specific licenses such as Base System, IP PBX, Call Center, Billing, Advanced Networking, IP Security, Authentication, Monitoring (integral monitoring of the client’s network and services), Virtualization and Productivity (to register and audit the use of the services by the users). Currently, the company is developing new modules that update and improve the efficiency of this tool, assuring an unlimited service life.

COMMS MUNDI can be implemented in different contexts that range from an integral office to e-Work, including public administration, ISP-in-a-Box, carriers and service-providers, advanced telephony and call centers, productivity increasement and IT-as-a-Service. Moreover, its target market includes SMEs, large companies’ branches, carriers and services providers, ISPs, public administrations, hotels and hospitals.

In less than a year of commercial activity, Wireless Mundi has partnered with over 30 companies around the globe like R Cable y Telecomunicaciones, Visáo, Promon-Logicalis Brazil, Mira Novas Tecnologías and the Scientific Park in Madrid. After the company’s 2009 capital increase procedures, the board of directors initiated a steady expansion targeting Brazil, United States, India, China, and Europe, among others. The world welcomes the efforts and solutions from this Madrilenian Company.

“ Wireless Mundi had a drastic turn in its focus when it started to work on the development of a new product with high market potential: the COMMS MUNDI”

• COMMS MUNDI is an ict integral solution that provides several advantages compared to the traditional architectu-re of multiple and separated solutions.
