Welcome to the Complete Streets & ITS Symposium

#CompleteStreets

Welcome to Atlanta, Georgia and ITS America’s final Symposia Series event of 2014, featuring Complete Streets & ITS.

Throughout the next two days, we will bring together public and private sector transportation leaders, practitioners, and researchers to discuss how technology can help make our nation’s transportation systems safer, smarter and more livable for all users.

Simply put, Complete Streets is about putting the individual first and creating a transportation environment that fosters economic growth within a community while better serving residents and visitors alike. Individuals and communities benefit from transportation systems that balance the needs of all users whether its pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, transit users, or freight operators.

With new ideas, projects and groundbreaking technology, Complete Streets policies in a city like Atlanta are fostering innovation and advancing solutions that actively create safer and cost-effective transportation systems that are improving quality of life across neighborhoods.

Throughout this symposium you will hear how incorporating cutting edge ITS tools and technologies are helping to optimize the existing transportation infrastructure and design of our cities and towns for the future with the individual in mind.

A special thanks to our supporting sponsors, Atkins, Axis Communications, Econolite Group, Inc., Grice Consulting Group, Kapsch TrafficCom, Siemens Industry, Inc. and Wireless Technology, Inc., for making this event possible.

To our audience, thank you again for attending the symposium. As leaders in the transportation and high tech industries, you have the vision, knowledge, and experience to help advance future ITS solutions and Complete Streets policies. Sincerely,

Keith T. Parker Tom Sever, P.E.General Manager and CEO President Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority ITS Georgia

Panel 1: Addressing Safety at Multimodal Intersections

At the heart of Complete Streets polices lies a simple goal, ensuring safety for all users of the transportation system. The traffic intersection is the place where pedestrians, bikers, drivers, transit riders and freight operators all come together in one shared space. The panelists will discuss how technology and various communication and detection options can increase intersection safety for the ever increasing multimodal world. From sensors, video detection, and loop technology, learn how pairing technological advances with an increase in modal choices can make our intersections safer for all users.

Panel 2: Redevelopment with ITS in MindIn today’s urban settings redevelopment is shaping the future of our cities by reclaiming unused and underutilized land. This redevelopment process has introduced the need to accommodate the movement of people, goods and services. Transportation systems incorporate pedestrian, bike and vehicular traffic making them a vital component to a successful development. This panel will explore systems that are being planned or that have been implemented in redeveloped areas within the city of Atlanta and highlight how we provide a safe and efficient transportation system in urban cities focusing on redevelopment opportunities.

Mayor David Belle IsleA husband, father, business owner and community leader, David Belle Isle was sworn into office as Alpharetta’s mayor in 2012. In David’s first year as mayor, David led the charge with a forward-thinking Council to land Georgia’s newest technical college in the city of Alpharetta, making the case for a $4,000,000 incentive to enable the new campus.David also recognized that Alpharetta was not merely a corporate headquarters city. The City boasts over 600 technology companies--more than twice the number of the City of Atlanta. So, David formed the State’s first technology commission. Comprised of Alpharetta’s leading technology executives, the ATC is leading the City towards innovation, cutting edge infrastructure, national branding, and the creation of a technology culture. And it’s working. In 18 months, Alpharetta has added over 4,300 high-paying technology jobs and is becoming known as the Technology City of the South. Over the course of David’s leadership, Alpharetta has been named the 6th fastest growing city in the country and the 7th friendliest city in the nation by Forbes. It has maintained the lowest unemployment rate in Georgia, and it is one of only two cities in the State to hold a AAA bond rating. Alpharetta also maintains the lowest office vacancy rate in the state and was recently named the fourth best city in Georgia in which to live.
