Solution Engineering for Vibration, Shock, Noise & Cushioning

1

The VersaDamp 2000 TPE system gives product engineers extraordinary flexibility in designing isolators and specifying molding materials. With the VersaDamp system, E-A-R can adjust both the damping perfor-mance and durometer of a TPE formulation to matchthe requirements of virtually any application.

E-A-R VersaDamp 2000 series materials provide predictable damping performance throughout a broad

range of temperatures. They can be injection moldedinto a wide variety of standard or customized isolators, including grommets, equipment mounts, bumpers andgaskets. Because final formulation occurs at the mold-ing machine, VersaDamp materials enable economicalprototype runs. They also can shorten the path to pro-duction, by allowing last-minute tuning of an isolator’sperformance without requiring tool modifications.

DESCRIPTIONVersaDamp TPEs are olefinic dynamic vulcanizates.

These proprietary formulations give VersaDamp

TPEs their rubber-like properties and unique

combination of high damping and useful broad

temperature range.

APPLICATIONS• Hand-held electronics, pagers, cellular phones,

computers, remote controls, bar-code scanners.

• Automotive and appliance components,

small motors, fans, pumps, switches and relays.

• Compliant, vibration-and shock-absorbing

hand grips for cutlery, power tools and

household appliances.

VersaDamp FeatureHigh damping.

Thermoplastic with low tempera-ture limit below -40C and a hightemperature limit of 125C.

Isolation stiffness changes only a small amount across a broad temperature range.

Select compounds from a rangeof both stiffness (durometer) anddamping.

Engineering BenefitAchieve maximum shock protection inminimum space! Your design can never be less reliable with damping.

Outdoor applications such as automotive,hand-held electronics, appliances—at a competitive or lower cost than thermosetrubber alternatives.

Uniform performance throughout a broadtemperature range. It is now much easierto use damping in the design of compo-nents. Uniform performance is achievable!

You can fine tune your design in one prototyping cycle—fewer tooling iter-ations. Speed up your design cycle!Benefits both design and multi-platformpart geometry standardization.

In actual tests, VersaDamp mounts reduced the 200gshock input on a high-density disk drive by 75%, andimproved settling time, increasing drive reliability andaccuracy. (Data courtesy Samsung.)

Uncontrolled response of rubber and poorly-damped elastomeric isolators can mean damage to sensitive components, as well as audible noise in typical operationenvironments. VersaDamp isolators minimize these effects.

E-A-R highly damped isolator materials offer importantadvantages over lower damping materials, such as natural rubber and other TPEs, when utilized in electronic equipment.

Transmissibility Acceleration

• Efficiently dissipate vibrational energy within an isolator, minimizing the system amplification response at or near the natural frequency.

• Reduce the peak and secondary amplifications to shock input, preventing an isolator from bottoming out, which can translateto improved reliability and equipment life.

• Minimize settling time after shock input, bringing the systemback to equilibrium more quickly, allowing faster access timesand increased operating speeds.

• Provide an additional method of controlling shock energythrough dissipation. E-A-R highly damped materials alloweffective shock control in small spaces.

The Difference is Damping

Grommets and MountsE-A-R’s proprietary VersaDamp, ISODAMP® and ISOLOSS®

custom and standard isolators feature high internal damping properties for:• Low amplification at resonance to protect equipment during

frequency cycling and random, real-world shock input.• Effective shock protection for sensitive mechanisms within

minimum sway space parameters.• Quick return to system equilibrium after vibration or shock input.

E-A-R isolators are ideal for shock, noise, vibration and motion control inelectronics and electromechanical equipment such as telecommunications, portable devices, computers, disk drives, printers and peripherals; medicaland office equipment; and precision and laboratory instrumentation. Theyare designed especially for mounting frames and mechanisms in cases andequipment cabinets, and are perfect to isolate pumps, fractional horsepowermotors and other small industrial machines.

Applications EngineeringMeeting the needs of design engineers goes beyond supplying the best materials available. Our customers benefit from the technology behind thosematerials as well. Our engineering staff’s extensive real-world experienceand in-depth materials expertise are backed by the latest in diagnostic andtesting facilities. Assistance from an E-A-R applications engineer may entaila quick phone call, a complete in-house lab diagnosis of a prototype or evena visit to the customer’s site.

The E-A-R NOVICON noise and vibration control lab is routinely used todiagnose and quantify problems, to develop the best solutions. A variety ofspecialized lab equipment provides vital data about materials and products, and a hemi-anechoic chamber allows in-house testing of developmental andfinished designs. Our engineers use CAD software to create fast and accurateprototypes as well. Using Native ProE, SDRC or IGES formats, our engi-neers translate complex 3D CAD files directly into precision tooling, without generating a drawing.
