The streets of Jodhpur are seen as a densified fabric of connectors and user responsive interactive spaces. The Navchowkiya houses a community temple and a well forming a semi public community gathering area. The junction of the streets consist of maximum activity and a mixed programmatic distribution of residential, commercial usages.

I started with a study of a jal i moving on to the city as a jali. Then studied var ious openings to create the fabric of the city and capture the character of the c i ty be ing dense yet open. The sound quality of the location was selected and the selected node had different sound densit ies which al lowed me to

have multiple openings with different modulations. Program selected was an Institute and a Library.I started my study with a cube having grills in all axis with different layers which acted as a jali in all dimensions. Then I worked with different modules and worked out my openings and tried to create a jali within a jali trying to create an Openness In Density relating to the fabric of the city.

The house located in Vitoria, Australia is designed by Sean Godsill. This house was built keeping in mind the weather, hence the use of multi layer system. It blends with the surrounding due to the material used, from a very coarse unfinished material to subtle use of glass. Hence selection of materials is not only for visual aesthetics but also for its functionality forming a protective mesh around the house. He used the human body as a metaphor for designing this house. The structural system of the house and the skin over it acts as exoskeleton whereas the circulation and space with different functions characterizes the endoskeleton. The three primary spaces living room, bedroom and the library are very different in its nature due to the volumes and the quality of light filtering in each of these rooms.

PLAN AT : ROOF LEVEL FIRST LEVEL GROUND LEVEL

The Insertion:

Guesthouse: The terrain & nature play an extremely important role in my extension to the Peninsula House. The intention was to make it look as if no extension has been added as you approach the house, using the terrain & levels to conceal the addition. Texture & materials play a large role in this (i.e: grass on roofs/concrete textures/etc) This happens on both sides of the extension although glimpses of architecture become more obvious as you move around the site. You can access the outside spaces using existing circulation paths while the rooms create a clear connection to the outside. Form is of secondary impact but developed using fluid elements and simple natural strokes.

The existing structure uses a porous membrane of wooden slats to help define the relationship of site/context to user/client. It allows several different readings: 1) connection to nature via materials/views/light 2) adaptability & flexibility using the open able system of wooden panels which can alter the relationship between interior/exterior.

Time and space are the two variables around which architecture is built. Buildings evolve over a period of time because the perception of spaces changes. A building needs to constantly respond with the its surrounding contexts and find a way to inhabit itself all round the year.

Such a strategy will ensure its survival and sustainability over a period of time. A primary requirement for this, is a flexible program or in other words a variable use of space which will lead to a constancy of use, over a period of time. This is especially true in the case of public buildings. Public spaces designed for time bound activities tend to fall in disuse after the completion of events. The most commonly examples are those of stadiums and public parks with specific timings. Consequently, anti social elements and activities abound such dead areas. Another point in the case of public buildings is the issue of maintenance. A public space which enjoys high occupancy will automatically generate its owns funds and find novel techniques to overcome inactivity.

In the contemporary context it is essential to design spaces which last over a period of time. Flexibility of programs, giving rise to multiple activities are the key to sustainable design. This was the start point for the selection of the program.

ARCHITECTS BRIEF

Mumbai is a region of great

ethnic diversity; this results in a

m u l t i t u d e o f d i f f e r e n t

communities, each with their own

unique cultural traits coming

t o g e t h e r . T h e p u r s u i t o f

excellence in passions creates

professionals. Unfortunately, the

spaces available for these

communities to pursue and

showcase their hobbies and

passions, which arise out of their

cultures, are extremely limited.

On the off chance that some

facilities or spaces do exist, they

are seldom well maintained, and

are unused or misused for the rest

of the time. Furthermore, due to

various reasons like lack of space,

high land values, etc, the facilities

that are provided are very

expensive for the vast majority

who have passion, but cannot

afford such spaces.

The site lies at the southern tip of

National Highway 8, at Bandra

Recalamation. It is an easily

accessible site, with connectivity

to Worli via the newly constructed

sea link, to Mahim via the Mahim

Causeway, to Bandra via S.V.

Road and Bandra Linking Road,

and to East and North Mumbai

via the Western Express Highway.

The project requirements call for a

recreational centre, which will

allow people from all the above

areas access to facilities and

spaces which will help them

nurture their talents on a leisurely

or professional level. Flexibility of

spaces and programme will

ensure maximum and optimum

usage of the faci l i ty. The

architecture should promote a

sense of conf luence and

c o n g r e g a t i o n , w h i c h w i l l

promote the programme.

The site is at the confluence of varying infrastructural developments and acts as a binder between the city and the suburbs. The idea of connectivity and visibility from afar and in between the programmes was examined. Zoning was done in such way where the central staircase acted as an adhesive to the spaces around and as a viewing g a l l e r y t o t h e s u r r o u n d i n g . Categorizing the programme from public to private led to the transition of transparent to opaque experiences within the spaces of the recreation centre.

The site is located in a densely populated urban plot of Juhu. The plot consists of units of varying typologies varying in density, users and programmatic distribution. Urban housing issues such as lack of adequate open space, physical needs, social problems, sustainability, movement of traffic and pedestrians, incremental housing as well as integration into the area’s economic, social and cultural structures is studied.

A site at Juhu was investigated for its potential for future development of housing. The project intended to break the boundary between the two cross lanes. Experimentation to develop a thoroughfare within the intervention led to a change in orientation of the built form. Also the housing typology was designed considering community dwellings which required inserts of open and free spaces of landscape at various levels left for interactions between the individual houses. Voids were intentionally left in the ground cover for future potential.
