A Few Key Industry Definitions

Wet Inlay• Typically the highest density label offering at the same

density, or unit-to-unit pitch, as the dry “on-pitch” inlay• Wet inlays are singulated & over-laminated with a

clear or opaque overlay – typically white for printers• They are adhesive based and adhered to a

release liner for easy removal & application to items or packages

Inlay• A functional RFID “tag”, generally intended for consumable purposesOn-Pitch Inlay• The native density of the inlay on a roll, or “web”• Generally the “closest” inlays are positioned to one another, governed by

the antenna geometry and chip attach processing capabilities Dry Inlay• A continuous roll of functional inlays on an un-singulated base substrate• Generally reserved for “converters” for application to specialty labels

Tag Sensitivity• Enhanced IC efficiency results in improved performance

Broadband Tag Design• Cardstock & plastic packaging may detune & affect tag

performance – broadband designs minimize degradationQuality

• Seek supplier reputation, experience & industry longevityOverlay quality

• High quality overlay results in clean, crisp printing

Edge LiftPeel Adhesion

• Inadequate adhesive quality may result in edge lift, where inlays may peel off the intended surface.

Inlay Considerations & Selection Criteria

12

• Alien has a robust, unconstrained IC, antenna, and inlay supply chain with capacity to accommodate hundreds of millions of inlays

• Distribution through numerous partner channels– reference website for listings or contact Alien directly

• Use of “on-pitch” wet white inlays enables low cost implementation solution

• Partner solutions, such as those offered by Zebra, allow on-pitch printing & programming

• Partner channel offers expert implementation advice in inlay selection, application options, and best practices for quick deployment

Designing and selling printer/encoders that deliver high performance since 1997

19

Printers get no respect…• The UHF Gen 2 standard was designed to:

– Read thousands of tags…– Several meters away…– In a fraction of a second.

• A printer/encoders goal:– Write just one specific tag…– A few millimeters away…– In the vicinity of thousands of others…– 100% of the time, for hundreds of different tag types.
