EM Naturally active is a non-chemical solution for use in the home and garden. This concept consists of a range of

products based on the ideas of Prof Teruo Higa, who developed EM Technology in Japan.

EM Research organisation studies concentrated on the development of agriculture and horticulture using micro-

organisms. EM Effective Micro-organisms Ltd introduced the concept of EM Naturally Active to continue this

important work. It is our belief that a healthy soil is the key to healthy foods in the soil food chain web.

Central in all our promotional work is our focus on promoting healthy fertile soils.

The biological processes in the soil are just as important as the physical and chemical processes in the soil. Optimal

soil fertility results in high yields of healthy foods and an improved immune system in soil and plants. EM has an

accumalative effect and leads to a diminished number of pests and disease in the garden.

We at EM Naturally Active are dedicated to promoting the care and maintenance of our ecosystems so that future

generations can still enjoy the wonders of our beautiful natural world.

Working in the garden with organic products and recycling our kitchen and green waste efficiently, contributes

to protecting the environment and minimising chemical based gardening products and landfill.

All EM Naturally Active products are completely safe for children, pets and wildlife. Introducing more good bacteria

into your environment improves your living space and can help boost the immune system of all around you.

EM is an abbreviation for Effective Micro-organisms.

The EM philosophy distances itself from the uncompromising competition going on in the world today. According

to Prof Higa this competition has a negative effect on issues of world peace, health and the environment. This

means that conditions are ripe for war, food shortages and health problems. We argue in favour of solidarity,

peaceful coexistence and shared wealth. In short we hope for more balance in the world!

EM NATURAL GARDENING TECHNIQUES & UNDERSTANDING YOUR SOILUnderstanding your soil makes it easy to garden organically. To

get the most from the soil it is useful to look at the chemical,

physical and biological processes taking place. A balance between

these processes is essential to achieve optimal results. Healthy

blooms and strong plant growth relies on a balanced fertile soil,

where nutrients are readily available.

The Garden Box contains all the necessary components to

acheive a well-balanced soil. All the products are naturally

sourced and derived from nature. These products, when used

together, will support the chemical, physical and biological

processes in your garden. Boosting the microbial life in the soil

by applying Actiferm will activate the soil and stimulate the

rhizosphere. This leads to an intensified biological conversion.

Chemical processes in the soil:Macro elements: Mineral nitrogen (N-mineral) organic

nitrogen (N-organic), phosphorus (P) potash (K), sulphur (S),

calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sodium (Na). Spore elements: Manganese (Mn), boron (B), silicon (Si), zinc

(Zn), iodine (I) molybden(M) copper (Cu), selenium (Se), Iron (Fe), cobalt (Co). pH: The pH level in the soil (acidity) depends on the soil type.

In the box below you will see guidelines for the preferred pH in

the soilOptimal pH values for different soil types:

TYPE OF SOIL Sand Sand/Loam Loam Clay

pH (H2O) 6.3 6.8 7.0 7.2

Physical aspects of the soil: Soil Types: Sandy, silty, loamy,

clay, peaty & chalky

soil. Structure: This varies

according to the soil

type and amount of

organic matter in the

soil. Density: The density

is a characteristic

which determines

the physical aspect of

the soil. Water Retention.

Depends on the soil

type and the humus

layer. A soil lacking

in humus cannot store water. The Garden Box will help improve

soil structure after structural decay which results in lack of

humus

Biological aspects of the soil:The soil contains a whole multitude of microflora and fauna

which includes microscopic bacteria, worms, nematodes and

fungi which play an important role in nutrient exchange and

plant growth.

Strong healthy root formation is enhanced by the ‘’life’’ in the soil.

These organisms also defend the soil from disease and

help prevent plant disease.

INHOUD

Keeping soil disease at bay: EM microbesEM acts like a probiotic in the soil. Helping to keep your

garden free from pests and disease adding more ‘good ’ bacteria,

means the disease causing bacteria don’t stand a chance of

multiplying!

Incresed nitrogen supply available to plants. More phosphorous available through improved rhizosphere

activity and the synthesis of growth substances and vitamins

which enhance plant growth.

ImmunologyThe soils defence against disease, or as we call it, the soil’s

immune system, is very similar to that of our own. When given

the correct feed and sufficient organic matter, the soils processes

are in balance with each other. The use of chemical fertilisers and

pesticides can disrupt this balance. Harmful bacteria which cause

disease can only multiply when the good bacteria in the soil are

diminished. By using Actiferm on the soil, abundant amounts of

good bacteria are able to thrive in the soil. This not only has a

disease suppressing effect but also has an accumalative effect on

the whole garden. This means that the longer EM is used in the

garden the better the results will be . Once the microflora have

been established in the soil the benefits remain for some time.

The carbon nitrogen cycleThe ratio of the carbon and nitrogen also plays a part in keeping

the soil balanced. Composting green waste and using Bokashi kitchen waste compost in your garden is beneficial and contributes to an increase in worms. Worms have a positive

influence on soil structure and enhance soil fertility.

The number of reproducing earthworms in your garden is

naturally dependant on the composition and quality

of compost.

BiodiversityThe biodiversity in the garden includes

all the little animals and insects, including

any wildlife which may visit the garden and

of course, all the microscopic animals which

we can’t actually see.

BASIC SOIL HEALTH

Page 6: COMPLETE GARDEN TREATMENT PACK FERTILISER AND … · Introducing more good bacteria into your environment improves your living space and can help boost the immune system of all around

CLAY MINERALSClay minerals are made up of tiny balls of clay,

2-5 mm in size. They contain many essential

trace elements which are beneficial to the soil.

These clay particles play an important part in

maintaining soil fertility. A unique property of

clay minerals is that they regulate the moisture

in the ground. The humus layer of soil nutrients are bound

together with clay minerals and form

the humus clay complex. Without

minerals the formation of a true

humus layer is not possible. Together,

the minerals and clay function as a

sorption complex. In addition to this,

the clay humus complex, or in other

words. the living organic matter in the soil, has a buffering effect.

This means that nutrients are only supplied to plants when

needed. So the clay minerals in the soil also function as an energy-

saving measure.

Analysis of the macro & trace mineral elements in clay.

Silicium oxide 56,0 % Borium 1000 ppm

Iron oxide 0,4 % Cobalt 35 ppm

Aluminium oxide 16,0 % Copper 20 ppm

Calcium oxide 4,0 % Manganese 300 ppm

Magnesium oxide 4,0 % Molybdeen 20 ppm

Kalium oxide 2,0 % Nickel 50 ppm

Sodium oxide 0,4 % Zinc 90 ppm

Application advice:

Spread 10 kg clay minerals / per 100m² / per year.

SEASHELL LIMEPure crushed seashells provide a natural source of minerals to the soil.

Using seashell lime it is easy to ensure an

optimal pH in the soil. Different types of

soil have different pH values. If the pH

value in the soil becomes too low (acidic),

nutrient uptake can be disrupted. By

treating your soil with seashell lime, soil

acidity is avoided.

A guideline of pH values in different types of soil:

SOIL TYPE Sand Sand/Loam Loam Clay

pH (H2O) 6.3 6.8 7.0 7.2

The seashell lime releases the minerals slowly into the soil. Derived from

the North Sea our seashell lime is made from recycled crushed seashells.

If the pH in the soil is correct, plant growth is stimulated. Seashell lime

contains trace minerals which contribute to remineralising the soil.

Stunted growth and plant disease can be more common when the soil

lacks trace mineral elements.

TIP : Keep slugs away from your

young plants by sprinkling a circle

of Seashell lime around them.

Works a treat!

Analysis of the trace minerals:

Potassium 150 mg/kg Manganese 55 mg/kg

Sodium 5000 mg/kg Cobalt 16 mg/kg

INHOUD

EM Bokashi Kitchen waste compost and uses in the garden

Recycling your everyday food waste in

the EM Bokashi Kitchen waste bucket

is a great way of fermenting food waste

and providing your garden with valuable

organic matter, high in nutrients and

energy.

Composting the green waste from your

garden and vegetable plot is a useful

technique. The Bokashi composting

method was awarded a medal at the

Chelsea Flower Show and has become a popular method for

recycling food waste. For composting green waste we recommend

using Actiferm which is a liquid brimming full of activated

Effective Micro-organisms (the active ingredient in Bokashi bran).

Tips for composting green waste:1. Choose a combination of at least two different types of

organic matter with varying carbon and nitrogen values, eg.

wood and grass.

2. To increase the microbial diversity as much as possible a

mixture of green waste will produce a better compost.

Recipe for improving green waste compost: Use 200 ml Actiferm diluted in 10 litres of water on every

100 litres volume of green waste. This is approximately 2

wheelbarrows full, (depending on the size of wheelbarrow).

Bring all of the green waste together in a pile and use a rake to

combine as much as possible. Using a watering can, sprinkle

the diluted Actiferm all over the top layer so that it trickles

down reaching the under layers. Application can also be done

on each layer by pressing down the layers firmly before adding the

next.

After applying, cover the heap with plastic sheeting or any

type of material which will insulate and therefore enhance the

fermentation. Leave the compost heap for at least 8 weeks before

using it in the garden.

Advantages of fermented compost: 1. More energy is retained as the compost does not heat up above

40⁰c.

2. Higher nutrient value in end product. The fermentation produces

many bio-active substances in the process, including antioxidants,

enzymes and vitamins.

3. Reduced CO² emission in comparison with traditional compost

methods.

4. No foul odour emitted and less vermin and flies.

Use 0.5 kg Bokashi compost per m² in the garden.

PRACTICAL TIPS

Page 10: COMPLETE GARDEN TREATMENT PACK FERTILISER AND … · Introducing more good bacteria into your environment improves your living space and can help boost the immune system of all around

EM & A+ = ACTIFERM

Actiferm is the ready-to-use liquid microbial active solution and is made

from brewing Effective Micro-organisms with A+.

It is made from a unique mixture of micro-organisms that freely occur

in nature.

The A+ is the nutrient that activates the micro-organisms and is derived

from sugar-cane molasses. It is a residual thick syrup obtained from

sugar production.

EM ActifermEM is the abbreviation for Effectieve Micro-organisms that are

microscopically small living organisms. EM is a combination of useful

regenerated micro-organisms that exist freely in nature and are not

manipulated in any way. Actiferm has been specially brewed and

vacuum packed for optimal freshness and quality. This mixture incre-

ases the natural resistance of soil, plants, water, humans and animals.

EM considerably improves the quality and fertility of soil as

well as the growth and quality of crops. The possibilities for using

EM are numerable and include the following:

Home and garden to combat odour.

Recycling kitchen waste with Bokashi and turning it into valuable

organic material.

Activating the soil with ‘good’ bacteria populations which help

minimise plant disease.

Organic gardening, used together with organic fertiliser and minerals.

In ornamental gardens, for the maintenance of forests, municipal

parks, and gardens.

Environmental projects to combat problems such as water, air and soil

pollution.

Agriculture: animal husbandry and slurry treatment.

Horticulture, fruit and flower cultivation.

Household pets; probiotic spray.

Fisheries, aquariums and swimming pools.

Personal body hygiene, prevention and treatment of health problems.

Composition of EM EM consists of many different kinds of micro-organisms each with a

specific task. In addition, the micro-organisms work symbiotically, and

produce many bio-active secretions beneficial to healthy plant growth.

Many of the microbes in EM are facultative which means they can

change from aerobic to anaerobic functioning. This is one of the unique

characteristics of EM. The micro-organisms are collected in nature and

are not modified or manipulated in any way.

EM consists of the following five families of bacteria:

Lactic acid bacteria: these bacteria are differentiated by their

powerful sterilising properties. They suppress harmful micro-

organisms and encourage quick breakdown of organic substances. In

addition, they can suppress the reproduction of Fusarium, a harmful

fungus and other major disease causing microbes.

Yeasts: these manufacture anti-microbial and useful substances for

plant growth. Their metabolites are food for other bacteria such as the

lactic acid and actinomycete groups.

Actinomycetes: these suppress harmful fungi and bacteria and can

live together with photosynthetic bacteria.

Photosynthetic bacteria: these bacteria play the leading role in the

activity of EM. They synthesise useful substances from secretions of

10

ACTIFERM PUTS THE LIFE BACK INTO YOUR SOIL

Page 11: COMPLETE GARDEN TREATMENT PACK FERTILISER AND … · Introducing more good bacteria into your environment improves your living space and can help boost the immune system of all around

roots, organic matter and/or harmful gases (e.g. hydrogen sulphide)

by using sunlight and the heat of soil as sources of energy. They

contribute to a better use of sunlight or, in other words, better

photosynthesis. The metabolites developed by these micro-organisms

are directly absorbed into plants. In addition, these bacteria increase

the number of other bacteria and act as nitrogen binders.

Fungi that bring about fermentation : these break down the

organic substances quickly. This suppresses smell and prevent damage

that could be caused by harmful insects.

Value and domination principle of EMWhat makes EM unusual is the combination of aerobic and anaerobic

facultative micro-organisms. The meaning of aerobic is living with

oxygen and anaerobic means living without oxygen. The scientific world

has always accepted that these two groups could not possibly live side-

by-side because the conditions for survival are completely opposite. Both

groups, however, naturally occur in the soil.

Before the discovery of EM, the natural assumption was that aerobic

micro-organisms were the “goodies” and anaerobic the “baddies”.

This, however, is a misconception. Both groups contain elements

of both causatives and suppressors of diseases. Effective micro-

organisms control the pathogenic disease-causing bacteria in the

soil.

By using EM, ‘good’ bacteria will always be the winning

team of microbes in your soil.

How microbes behave: Different groups of micro-organisms

exist in the world, including those of a small group of dominant

“effective” micro-organisms and a small group of dominant “harmful”

micro-organisms. The largest group are opportunitists and can go either

way but usually join the winning group. (see figure 1).

The two groups of effective and harmful organisms are engaged in a

constant battle with each other. The millions of other micro-organisms

wait on the sidelines to see which group will win. They then adjust

themselves in order to follow or imitate the winning group.

“Harmful micro-organisms are currently dominating as much as ninety

percent of cultured grounds. This is due to many reasons including

monocultures, reduced crop rotation, intensive use of chemical and

artificial fertilisers, bad or faulty tillage, heavy machinery use, pesticides

and exposed unprotected soils.

Harmful substances coming from industry, air pollution and household

waste also account for an increase in harmful micro-organisms.

Together, all this is unfavourable for the condition of soil, the quality of

food and the health of humans and animals”

EFFECTIVE MICRO-ORGANISMS

Page 12: COMPLETE GARDEN TREATMENT PACK FERTILISER AND … · Introducing more good bacteria into your environment improves your living space and can help boost the immune system of all around

EM is quality controlled and guaranteed safe and fresh with a shelf-life

date on each package. Using EM in and around the home and garden

will improve living environments . The more EM is used the healthier

the environment and the stronger in suppressing disease both in the soil

and in human beings. The following list includes our main aims for a

cleaner and chemical-free world:

Fertile soil, clean air and water.

Improved water treatment and recycling.

Healthy plants and trees.

Sustainable Agriculture and horticulture.

Improved health of humans and animals with reduced incidence

of disease.

The correct use of EM in agriculture, horticulture, homes and gardens

will encourage the environment to increase the number of effective

micro-organisms!

(See Figure 1. The domination principle, page 11)

Permanent activity of EMCurrent trends and techniques in Agriculture and Environmental

projects often lack a holistic approach, taking into account that all the

cycles on-farm and in nature are connected. We believe that prevention

is better than cure. A sound understanding of basic principles in

nature allows us to make better decisions which improves profitability

for farmers and supports sustainability. The goal of EM Naturally

Active is to increase awareness of the need for earths recovery and

promote easy natural gardening which will help nature help itself.

The recovery of nature’s balance is made possible by correctly

utilising the natural processes. This means that more diverse soil

micro-flora will exist due to a more varied cultivation. The repeated

combination of various crop remnants, animal manure, and green

manure will lead to a much more intensive microbial life in the soil

than when only one sort of organic substance is used. It is important,

especially in the first year, to use Actiferm (EM) frequently. The correct

amount applied at intervals will give stunning results. Once the micro

flora become established in the soil layers, the benefits are ongoing and

remain for a long time.

Effectivity of EM

EM is a living substance and does not work in the same manner as

antibiotics or chemical substances. EM increases the population of

beneficial micro-organisms. This cannot be achieved with chemical

fertilisers and agricultural pesticides. Artificial fertilisers act on

the salt and acid content, which can have a negative effect on the

environment.

EM does not kill other living things. It is a probiotic and works by

a mechanism that eliminates harmful insects and at the same time

stimulates the increase and distribution of beneficial insects. The

advantage of this process is that no new anomalous insect species

with even higher increased resistance will develop.

The effect of EM is accumalative. Results are dependant on

application and area of use. Depending on application, results

may be noticeable after a few days (as in eliminating foul odour),

or after several months (in the case of soil rejuvenation).

MÉÉR DAN GOEDE BACTERIËN ALLEEN !

The Secrets of a Fertile Soil by Erhard HennigExcellent reading for every gardener, horticulture grower and

agricultural merchant. An exciting and informative book

about preserving soil fertility and the soil-food-chain-web. The

reader is taken on a journey to understand soil physiology , soil

microbiology and how we can prevent soil damage..

Our soils are continually mistreated and under threat from

pollution, pesticides and chemical use. Minerals, important for

plants, are often scarce in the soil. This deficiency of minerals

has a negative influence on our immune systems. This is evident

in disease and symptoms often of the bones, joints and allergies.

These symptoms may be indirectly linked to the food we eat.

The gradual poisioning of soils and ground water caused by

pesticides and chemicals, and the deficiency of humus, has a

negative influence on human health. The soil is a living entity

and needs care and attention so that it may provide us with the

best food possible.

DVD Life in the soilThis film encourages people to think about how we are living!

The healthy soil is portrayed as an extremely complex living

organism which is also vulnerable. The soil life is filmed in

wonderful natural colours with the use

of an electronic microscope.

The message coming from the film

is clear: recognise the importance of

sustainable agriculture and learn the

nature of the soil in order to completely

understand it.

In order to ensure a sustained

productivity and stability, the soil must

be continually fed.

The film covers various aspects, such as an introduction to soil

science, soil microbiology, sustainable agriculture, agricultural

ecology and environmentology.

The film is suitable for all levels of agricultural colleges and

universities and may also be appealing to the general

public and of course the keen gardener.
