How to Compile Blender in Ubuntu

1. Firstly, install or reinstall Ubuntu. If you are new to Ubuntu click here for the download and installation instructions.

Download 64-bit version. Blender 2.5 is much more faster in this version.

2. Install the latest graphic card driver in Ubuntu. You can also update your graphic driver from Additional Drivers.

3. Update Ubuntu with Update Manager. Then restart your system.

4. Go to Graphicall.org and download any 2.55 beta Linux 64 bit version build.

5. Extract and run. Wait! What happened? Doesn’t work? Why?

6. In order to run Blender 2.5 in Ubuntu, you have to install required dependencies.

7. How can you install them? Follow the instructions.

8. Open Ubuntu Terminal. You can install dependencies with Terminal. Click here for more info.

9. Click here and copy all the dependencies to clipboard.

10. Paste copied dependencies into the Terminal. Then enter your admin password and press enter.

11. A question appears. Type y and press enter to continue. After the download, restart your system.

You can easily open Blender builds now.

You should see the message below (end of the line.)

This means that dependencies download and installation

Is complete.

12. Let’s compile now. Open Terminal again. Copy these lines and paste into Terminal. Press enter twice.

13. Okay. What do these commands do?

cd ~

mkdir blender-svn 

These commands create a folder named blender-svn (in Home Folder.)

cd ~/blender-svn/blender 

svn co https://svn.blender.org/svnroot/bf-blender/trunk/blender

These commands download Blender source code into the blender svn folder.

cd ~/blender-svn/blender

python scons/scons.py -j 4

These commands compile Blender. -j 4 defines the compile speed. (for four cores processors.) You can change the

number according to your core number.

14. Compile starts and ends. You should see the scons : done building targets message at the end of the Terminal.

15. Restart your system then go to Home Folder/blender-svn/install/linux2 folder and run blender.

Congratulations! You are a Blender Compiler now!

16. If you want to update the source code. Copy these lines and paste into Terminal again. 

17. If you encounter problems, go to Blender.org coding blender forum.
