COMPETITIVE CLUBS YEARBOOK 2009-10

Message from Director of Athletics & RecreationAnother competitive season for Queen’s Athletics & Recreation draws to a close and we are pleased to celebrate a very successful campaign from each of our Competitive Clubs. Your accomplishments this season are many and we are especially proud of how you have represented Queen’s at competitions in both Canada and abroad.

As competitors, leaders, scholars and ambas-sadors, you carry on a proud and unique heritage that contributes to the vibrant tradi-tion of sports on our campus. I applaud your commitment and passion on the field of play, in the classroom and in the community.

This season we were pleased to see the opening of the new Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC) and the new home for our teams and clubs. On opening day – 10,000 people, including the majority of our 800 student-athletes, accessed the facility for the first time. Feedback continues to be positive and we are excited about opportunities the ARC holds for our student-athletes and the way in which it can support our team’s development and preparation.

We continue to reach for our vision to become the leading athletics and recreation program within Canada. While we have much to do, we have accomplished a great deal and we continue to strive towards our end goal, which is very much within reach – I look forward to our next steps and with much anticipation and enthusiasm to the 2010-11 competition season when our Gaels are back in action.

Message from Manager of Recreation & Sports Clubs:Congratulations on a season well done! I am extremely proud of the 2009-10 edition of our Competitive Clubs. Our student-athletes con-tinue to embody the legendary Queen’s spirit and you give our school much to cheer about. It is my pleasure to thank you for another suc-cessful year and I look forward to the 2010-11 campaign.

I would be remiss without thanking Lisa Eyles for her hard work and dedication to the com-petitive clubs program. She continues to be the administrative heart and soul behind our success. Without her, we wouldn’t have the outstanding opportunities we have.

Season RecapIt was a rebuilding season for the Queen’s men’s baseball team. As is the general case with interuniversity sport, wins, losses and draws often correlate with experience, and the ability of players to adapt to a higher level of competition from what they have been accustomed to. Where last year’s club saw bitter defeat in a single deciding playoff game, this squad fielded a completely revamped core of players. In nearly every game, the team fielded between 5 and 7 rookies, and turned to its first year players to take on critical roles.

While a sub-.500 season rarely translates into championships and playoff appearances, the most important aspect of any rebuilding season is to develop a plan moving forward; to learn over the trials of competitive regular season play, individually, what has to be done on a fitness and preparation level, and from a coaching standpoint, what roles players are best suited for. In this, Queen’s Baseball succeeded.

The prognosis for the upcoming 2010 season features a jump to a more

competitive circuit of play with a shift into the OUA, and a potential returning group of 14 players. To have such a small turnover in bodies is very rare in university sport, and with the inevitable addition of new members to the team in the offseason, improvement is imminent. The influx of youth means Queen’s is absolutely committed to being competitive for at least a few seasons, with an OUA playoff spot set as a very realistic goal for 2010.

Season RecapAt the end of last season, the cheerleading team lost a great number of our talented veterans due to a painful and frightening condition called “graduation,” something many team members have successfully and repeatedly managed to avoid. With so many people leaving Neverland, the remaining veterans organized a large recruiting effort, resulting in the introduction of the Cheermobile and people being belligerent on megaphones. We had one of largest open tryouts in the history of the team, leading to our large pool of eager rookies.

With so many new recruits, many of whom were entirely new to the sport, it cannot be said that the season was without its frustrations at times. But the team still managed to pull together, even though certain members failed on a repeated basis to wash their clothing. Highlights from the pre-Nationals period include: a great deal of skill progression, accompanying the Queen’s championship football team to the Vanier Cup, Kevin learning all the words to the

Oil Thigh, and the creation of the game “Lost in Translation.”

Then came Nationals in early December. After the girls woke up at around 6:00am for make-up and hair, and guys waking up ten minutes before competition to put their underwear on, our mixed experience level team had a tremendous showing.

The remainder of this season and next season are full of great potential, with so much raw talent waiting to be harnessed. The team would like to thank its coaches Sandy and Dréa.

Season RecapFor the second straight year, the Queen’s Cycling team finished second behind a very strong University of Guelph team in the University Cup series. The Gaels had a number of excellent individual performances throughout the season from both veteran and rookie riders. In Men’s A, Steve Chapman was once again a consistent podium finisher. Darryl McGrath, James Clarke, and Jon Slaughter also turned in a number of top-10 performances. In Women’s A, Ali Beamish, Jenn Wilson and Emily Jibb each had several top-10 finishes.

Women’s B had a number of excellent rookie riders, with podium finishes by Tori Giangrande and Heidi Manicke. Mark Carlson won several races and the overall championship in Men’s B, and Monty Bassin, Jeff Loeb, and Scott Burgess were also consistently within the top-five.

The cycling team will compete on the road this spring, and will look to continue its success in the ECCC series. While it was disappointing not to win the team title in the University Cup series, it was an amazing season and the team is looking forward to next year.

Season RecapWith many returning players and a large group of rookies, the Queen’s Women’s Fastpitch team held together strong through the six week season. Over the six weeks, the team travelled though Ontario from Kingston to Windsor and showed what Queen’s really had to offer. The team, led by graduating captain Kelsi Ball, had so much pride and spirit throughout the season. A player could never be found quiet on or off the diamond.

Queen’s had great leadership on the baselines as well as in the dugout and strategically played their best. Their hard work and dedication all season long led Queen’s to their victories during the course of the season. Through the difficult battle and rainy season, Queen’s unfortunately did not make it to championship weekend; however, the 2009 season will not be forgotten.

Despite the many graduating players, the young team shows tremendous potential in the upcoming years. There are high expectations for the returning team and

they will prove to be successful.

The team would like to extend a very special thank you to Kelsi Ball for her exceptional dedication and hard work to the team. She has been an amazing player and leader on and off the diamond for the past four years. She truly has shown Queen’s what our Women’s Fastpitch team can accomplish.

Season RecapComing off of a very successful season, the Men’s Lacrosse team had set high expectations for themselves this season. While the team did not achieve the same level of success that they did the year before, their record did not reflect their talent and heart as they lost three games that could have gone either way. At the end of the year they were able to string together a few important wins, including one against Bishop’s University, a team they had never beaten before. While these wins were not enough to get them into the playoffs, they proved that this year’s rookie class is not only one of the strongest Queen’s has ever had, but one that will be an important foundation for the next few years.

The team graduates a significant amount of players this year but they are very opti-mistic looking into the future. Thanks to a

strong rookie class that includes the likes of Matt Eriksen, Ryan Zoehner, Nathaniel Kerstens, Alex Ostojic, and many others, the team is expecting to get back to the same level of success that they had in 2008 next season.

Season RecapIt was another marvellous season for Queen’s Sailing. With the brilliant coaching of Kate MacLennan, Queen’s sailors competed in doublehanded regattas, singlehanded events, sloops regattas and big boat regattas all over North America.

In the doublehanded classes, the Gaels took third at the Coho Memorial, second at the Queen’s Open, third at the New York Area Dinghy Regatta and fifth at the North #2 qualifier. Many of these successes were due to our 16 amazing rookies.

In singlehanded events, Evert McLaughlin and Matt Ryder owned the podium at the Laser North #2 qualifier, placing first and third respectively. Both sailors moved on to the MAISA men’s championship, where Evert placed 2nd and qualified for the North American championship.

For big boat regattas, Queen’s sent a crew of seven to race at the Shields Trophy and the McMillan Cup. With Corbin Lott at the helm, the team showed great

improvement, and scored a fifth in one race at the Shields Trophy and a seventh in a race at the McMillan Cup.

Off the water, the Queen’s Sailing Team helped raise money for Able Sail Kingston (ASK), a club for sailors with disabilities.

The spring sailing season has started, and the Gaels will compete in the North Spring Qualifier at Cornell, April 3rd and 4th.

Season RecapThe 2009-2010 season was an impressive year for Queen’s Synchro. We had more teams than ever: three competitive teams, two novice teams, and two novice duets.

Queen’s hosted the Eastern Canadian Competition in the new Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC) in January, and all teams had great swims. Queen’s managed two victories at this meet, including gold in the team competition, and silver in the novice competition.

At the national meet in London, Ont., all teams were well prepared and had great swims again. The yellow team finished in fourth, the blue team in 10th, and the red team in 13th. In the novice division, the E team placed fifth, the N team placed seventh, and the duets placed second and third respectively.

Season RecapQueen’s Triathlon has been extremely successful this year. With almost an en-tirely new team and executive, we have managed to handily defeat our main rivals, Western and U of T, at each of our three competitions so far this season.

We hosted the first race of the University Multisport Series (UMS), the annual Wolf Island Duathlon, on the 31st of October, where Queen’s students took ten of the available twelve medals. Our success has continued at both of the University of To-ronto races, where Queen’s athletes have dominated both the Veteran and Rookie categories.

We are hoping to continue our success at Western on the 7th of March, and then here at home in early April at the UMS Championship race. Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding year!

Season RecapWomen’s Ultimate had a very successful season in 2009-10. After practicing together for a week, the team travelled to London, Ont., to compete in the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships. The team placed seventh overall after a long weekend of Ultimate with new teammates.

With little time to tend to the numerous injuries that occurred in September, the women continued to train intensely in order to compete in the National Championships in October. The team traveled to Montreal, Que., to compete in the three-day tournament, placing seventh in all of Canada.

The Women’s Ultimate team is pleased with their standings this year and knows that in the coming years, Queen’s will only continue to make an impact on the Canadian Ultimate scene. As the team

gains more experience in the coming years, the already talented rookies will return and continue to increase their skills. The team is already training at the Kingston Sports Dome in order to keep their skills up for next fall.

Season RecapAfter eschewing the Canadian championships last year to play in the States, the men’s ultimate team returned to London for the Eastern Championship seeded low. They fought their way to the quarterfinals against three-time defending national champion Toronto, where they jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold on as Toronto won a heartbreaker 10-9 to send Queen’s into the consolation rounds. The team managed to finish fifth with a win over Ottawa, and afterwards, they refocused in preparation for Nationals in Montreal.

A first day rematch against Toronto awaited them, and Queen’s was ready, dispatching them 15-7 to finish their first day of games. On the second day, they again pulled an upset, defeating UBC 12-6 to open the day and finishing it atop their power pool, with a spot in the quarterfinals waiting for them.

After starting bracket play well with a 15-6 win over Waterloo, Queen’s ran into Carleton University, led by Kielan Way.

An early deficit proved too much for Queen’s, as Carleton withstood their late rally for a 13-12 win. Despite the loss, Queen’s finished third at the highly-competitive National tournament and they are looking forward to their spring season in the United States.

Great handling performances were turned in by Richie Tam and second year Andrew Carroll, along with the inspiring play of co-captain Ernie Lin battling through injuries at Nationals. Third year Alex Ginther made the switch from handling to cutting well to join a strong core led by co-captain Geoff Powell.
