Plan on 2 nd Myanmar ROV Competition

(Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) & Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) Competition)

Introduction

1. Myanmar Maritime University started to map the guidelines for this ROV & AUVcompetition in (2010-2011 ) academic year for the following purposes

(a) to construct and study the control system of research underwater vehicles inaccordance with the developing technologies

(b) to promote the students’ creativity and knowledge(c) to help conduct the national underwater researches

2. In (2010-2011) academic year, a group of student submitted a study on ROV& AUVas their final year project and got some accomplishments. In 2012-2013 academic year, thestudy of underwater vehicles come alive again when two groups of students study andconstruct ROV and AUV separately as their final project. These two projects tried to rectifythe previous work by their predecessor and made some improvements.3. These works by students intrigue me to lay out the plan for competition on underwatertechnology, especially ROV & AUV, which would allow students to work in groupregardless of their field of studies, for students who have passion for inventions andtechnology. These competitions will surely benefits in allowing students to uncover their

potentials and creativity and exploration of new technologies.4. 1st Myanmar ROV Competition had been successfully held on 9 th January 2015 atMyanmar Maritime University’s swimming pool. This competition awarded 5 prizes.

Aim

5. To enhance the creativity of students from Myanmar Maritime University and todevelop underwater robotics and research vehicles which can be used in national underwaterresearches.

Phases to hold competition

6. The proposal will be materialized according to the following phases.(a) Funding ( fund raising and seeking for donors, sponsors)(b) Preparing for the competition(c) AUV& ROV Competition, screening and prize awarding

Funding

7. Being the most basic and important need of a competition or research, the leastamount of money needed to hold the competition is estimated below-

(a) First prize - US $600(b) Second prize - US $500(c) Third prize - US $400(d) Consolation prize - US $300

(e) Consolation prize - US $300(f) Miscellaneous expenses - US $300

8. The mentioned estimate is made mainly upon consideration of recovering the costsincurred in developing and constructing a vehicle. And, even if the expenses are not covered, the knowledge and experience gained will be priceless for students. US $ 2400, therefore, isthe least amount of money needed to hold this competition.

Preparations

9. Preparing for competition is laid out on required time basis,(a) Asking for approval from the university ` - 1 week

(b) Introducing the competition and inviting teams for competition - 1 month

(c) Screening proposals of the participating teams - 1 month

(d) Selecting and announcing 5 relevant groups - 1 week

(e) Allowing the selected teams to realize their proposals - 6 months

(f) Poster presentation and showing practical performance of the vehicle - 1 week

(g) Awarding

10. The estimated time for the whole proposal is one academic year.

Competition and Prize awarding

11. This will be done by inviting external examiners to evaluate presentations and practical performance of each vehicle.

Benefits of this competition

12.

We can get the following benefits from the ROV & AUV Competition,(a) Participation of students from various majors(b) Collaboration and mutual understanding of students from different principles of study(c) Enhancement of creativity and productivity of students(d) Helping national underwater researches

Monitoring Team and Support Team

13. Any interested teacher from MMU can give advices and helps the participating teams, but he or she shall not be allowed to supervise the individual team. The participating teamshall not be allowed to have supervisor or mentor.

Conclusion

16. By doing this competition, underwater technology in Myanmar will be improved and

operational AUV& ROV with leading-edge technology will be developed from universitylevel to national level, which can give a great advantage to national underwater researches. This will help to realize the motto,” To construct a modern developed nation with

education ”, and attain development of marine science and technology.
