Reasons for this transition towards emerging markets are:

    Increasing costs,

declining productivity and rising drug development timelines,

The various advantages offered by these emerging markets,

which is driving research-driven pharmaceutical andbiotechnology companies to conduct clinical research beyond

    established markets are:

    4. The high commercialization potential of the compound in

these markets, e.g., pharma prescription, is attractive and

growing fast at nearly 12-14% p.a.

    Cost Competitiveness

In addition to the previously mentioned success factors, India also has a significant

cost arbitrage in the conduct of clinical trials, including infrastructure, operational,

patient recruitment, drug, manpower, data management and processing costs.

    Conclusion

India is one of the most attractive clinical trial destinations

worldwide and at the same time the most preferred choice for IT

outsourcing, a unique advantage that is not enjoyed by any other

    emerging economy other than China.

It is thus best placed to assume a leadership position among

emerging economies as the location for clinical research services,

and among the top five markets for clinical trial conduct

    worldwide by 2015.

Emerging markets are no more an option but a strategic

    imperative for global clinical research.
