A campaign to expand Sorrentino’s Compassion House
It takes a lot more than deep pockets and a tool belt to renovate a home. It takes forward thinking, preparation, and research. Oh, and a whole lot of
heart, soul and commitment.
Our expansion journey started with a very successful feasibility study. As a result, Compassion House Foundation has quietly launched a $5 million
campaign to expand and renovate the current house, adding eight new guest suites, an expanded kitchen and other amenities, as well as a sustainability
fund to ensure guest fees remain affordable.
It’s our commitment to ensure that we help as many women as possible that require not only a place to sleep, but a place to call home.
Says one of our former guests:“Even though each individual goes through their own experience with cancer, it is somehow comforting to sit in a room, look at each and every person, and know that they have a
bond— it is not good to be alone in this journey.”
Can you imagine the difference you can make when you make a commitment to this amazing expansion?
MISSION VISIONMISSION VISION
Our Mission and Vision guide us in the work we do. We don’t need to preach our values because they are your values
too. Generosity. Empathy. A sense of community. This is what drives us. Our inspiration comes from the strength of
the women we serve.
Mission: The Compassion House Foundation will provide sanctuary and support to women with breast cancer and
their companions during diagnosis, treatment and recovery within and beyond our four walls.
Vision: More women with breast cancer will have access to sanctuary and compassionate support.
Compassion House Foundation flourishes through the leadership of our board of directors. These twelve individuals volunteer their time, talent, and commitment because they care. They serve because they feel a responsibility to
support the families who are going through a tough time and to show them that they are not alone.
In September Barb Walker retired from the board and in turn joined our capital
campaign cabinet. Every departure marks a new arrival and we’re pleased to announce Kathy Bonazew joined the board in the role of treasurer. Thanks to
each of you for your passion and dedication.

Our incredible network of volunteers spent time tending to the yard, baking cookies, cleaning the house, shoveling snow and
mowing the lawn. They helped out at our signature event, Syncrude presents Fashion with Compassion, worked the silent
auction at the Fork it Over fundraiser, raised money at the Sylvan Meadows Golf Tournament, and helped belt out a few numbers at karaoke parties at the house. Our volunteers make
things happen and we are truly grateful.

OPENAt Compassion House Foundation there are two words that haunt us. No
vacancy. For the hundreds of women who have stayed at Sorrentino’s Compassion House, the sense of sisterhood, companionship, comfort and
support they find gives them the strength to keep going—to survive. So you can imagine how painfully sad it is when we simply don’t have a room.
That’s all about to change. Plans are underway to raise the funds needed to more than double the size of Sorrentino’s Compassion House. The goal is to
complete the expansion in time to celebrate our 10th anniversary in the fall of 2012. So you can see we have a big year ahead of us, and a lot to be proud of
this past year.
To all of you who help make the house a home away from home for women on their cancer journeys. To board members, volunteers, corporate partners and generous donors down the street, across the province and beyond – thank you
for everything you do. And finally to our staff who tirelessly deliver compassion every day, we applaud you.
Ian B. MacDonald • Board President
“Time passes and memories fade but my soul will forever remember the kindness and fellowship I experienced
within these walls of Sorrentino’s Compassion House.” Christine
Compassion House is a special place, a home away from home for Alberta women seeking breast cancer treatment in Edmonton. Imagine what it must be like. One day you are having your regular mammogram and the next day you awake into a bad
dream that devastates your whole family.
Give up? Not on your life. The women who walk through our doors fight with veracity. They refuse to sit by. With a community of support they soak up our love and our empathy. Knowing you are rooting for them makes their hearts soar with the will to survive. The struggle seems to last an eon, but they put one foot in front of the
other and never lose sight of the finish line. Victory doesn’t come to all, but those who make it to remission feel a duty to comfort and support their fellow houseguests like
a big sister.
At Compassion House Foundation there are two words that haunt us. No vacancy. For the hundreds of women in the fight of their lives who have lived at Sorrentino’s Compassion
House, the sense of sisterhood, companionship, comfort and support they find gives them the strength to survive. Having to say no to these women is heartbreaking each and every time.
That’s all about to change.
Open. At Sorrentino’s Compassion House, even more women will find quiet peace of mind or the courage to pour out their hearts. Open. We will open our doors wide so that more guests can focus on fighting breast cancer rather than fighting traffic in taxis between
expensive hotels and cold hospital cafeterias. Open. We will grow to accommodate demand, ensuring that we won’t have to turn on the ‘No Vacancy’ sign again.
Plans are underway to more than double the size of Sorrentino’s Compassion House. The goal is to complete the expansion in time to celebrate our 10th anniversary in the
fall of 2012.
To all who help make that happen – the board members, volunteers, corporate partners and donors down the street and around the province – thank you for opening your hearts to make
our dream a reality. And finally to our staff who tirelessly deliver compassion every day, we applaud you.

COMPASSION HOUSEFOUNDATION
OPEN
When there’s a job to be done, communities roll up our sleeves and make it happen.
Sorrentino’s Compassion House means something different to every woman who walks through the doors. Flipping through our guest book, you will find women like Dawn, who appreciated finding a home and a
family when she couldn’t be with her own. Women like Joyce, who cherished the feeling of being embraced by the house, finding the grace and
dignity to continue her journey.
Or Greg:“Thanks so much for taking such great care of my wife.”
The walls of this house are painted with the stories of the women whose lives have been changed by the experience. Help us build new memories for all the women whose struggle is just beginning. Please open your hearts
(and the next panel) to help however you can.
2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT
Circle the highlighted
words. The uncircled
letters will spell out what to do
next.
It’s probably what you expect from an annual report—facts and figures. But we all know the statistics. One in nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their
lifetime, and the diagnosis can be emotionally and financially devastating to a family. It can be especially lonely when you must leave your community for treatment.
The theme of this year’s annual report is “Open”. That’s because our job is to be open. Open hearted. Open and welcoming. A place where you can be yourself.
Here’s what we did this past year: We helped people.
Throughout the year Sorrentino’s Compassion House was a refuge for women who needed to feel safe as they fought for their lives.
Like Ruth: “It’s all right to have cancer here. It’s all right to talk about it without thinking you are scaring somebody who loves you. It’s a safe place to be depressed and tired, or happy and energetic. It’s a safe place to tell people what you need and how
you’re really feeling.”
Or Liz: “While the surgery has left its scars, and the chemo and radiation have had their effects, it is not these things that have changed me. It is the people along the
way that have altered my outlook about what matters.”
That’s the kind of year we had.
