Manage for sustainable timber harvest, improved wildlife habitat, and dispersed forest recreation.
Upland areas are gently rolling to rolling while lowland areas inundated most of time.
Compartment is composed of three blocks, each separated by physical features. The north block is accessed across Weyerhauser lands. We do not have a public use easement for the road crossing here, but it has been open to the public historically. The central block extends along Haywire road, a primary DNR forest road, and Shag Lake road, a paved county road. The south block is isolated by private property and Miller Lake and its tributaries and wetlands. The compartment blocks in well with a larger piece of state acreage to the west. The Weyerhauser block is found to the north and northeast sides of compartment. Many permanent residences on small lake parcels adjoin the compartment to the east, along Shag Lake. Multiple driveways cross state ownership, Small private parcels are adjacent to the south side of compartment.
Miller Lake and tributaries. Haywire Lake and outlet. Shag Lakes in vicinity to east.
MNFI reports for Sections 23 and 26.

Compartment 040 is found within the Chain Lakes Moraine Management Area; on a Disintegration Moraine in Southwestern Marquette County. The dominant Natural Communities are dry mesic northern forests, poor conifer swamps, and mesic northern forests. This management area offers opportunities to increase diversity and perhaps long-term oak sustainability through under planting white and red pine. Another priority is to maintain or increase wildlife corridors especially along riparian corridors. Wildlife management issues in the management area are: mast (hard and soft); habitat fragmentation; mature forest conditions; mesic conifer; course woody debris; and retention or development of large living and dead standing trees (for cavities). This management area represents approximately ¼ of the oak resource on WUP state forest. The following have been identified as featured species for Chain Lakes Management Area: black bear, gray jay, pileated woodpecker, Northern goshawk, red crossbill.
Sections 23, 26, & 35, T45N R26W, Marquette CountyA former gravel pit is located just to the west, in Section 27,and there appears to be some good sand and gravel potential within the compartment. Abandoned iron mines are located just over two miles to the east. There is no history of mineral leasing within the compartment and metallic mineral production appears to be low at the time. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP.

Additional Compartment Information:
Shag Lake drive provides year-around access as is plowed by County. Haywire Lake road provides seasonal access through compartment as is an unplowed DNR road. The DNR holds a public use easement on Haywire Lake road where it crosses private lands. FRD staff from Gwinn have worked to drastically improve Shag Lake road in the last two years. Shag Lake road is an important connector road used heavily by the public. Multiple driveways leading to private residences are found along the central east side of compartment. The continued use of the Weyerhauser road leading to the north parcel is critical for forest management operations, wildlife habitat management, and forest recreation.
Several new survey monuments will be needed in future.
This compartment provides unimproved access to Miller Lake along its north shore. Haywire Lake is surrounded by state ownership. Hunting, trapping, snowmobiling, and ORV riding are all important forest recreational uses.
Area does not at high risk of forest fire and is located within couple miles of Gwinn DNR station.

A coldwater lake has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species to persist from year to year. Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 200.
Cold Water LakeSCA
A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210.
