One of the most frequently assigned essays throughout any student academic career is to write a compare and contrast essay on two concepts, ideas, public figures, etc. This task may seem simple, but there are a few steps that you need to take before writing such an essay. Although it may seem childish, a Venn Diagram is a perfect starting place for comparing and contrasting. It clearly outlines the differences and similarities between the two topics of comparison. Once you have brainstormed sufficiently and know what specifically about the two topics you will be comparing, you are ready to start writing the essay.

When you eventually sit down to write the essay, the opening paragraph can often slow down writers and prevent them from moving through the compare and contrast essay. Your introduction should begin by discussing, in detail, the topics that you will be comparing. Conclude the opening paragraph with your thesis that both leads into the body of the essay and states why a comparison of the two topics should be conducted.

When analyzing certain aspects of one topic, it is essential to mention the same aspect in the other. For example, if the essay is comparing two different types of dogs, you shouldn’t just state that one has black spots. If you make such an argument, be sure to reference the other topic of comparison, and state, for example, that one dog has black spots, and the other dog has no spots, brown spots, etc. If you make sure to analyze certain aspects in both topics, you should be able to draw some sort of conclusion from your analysis. Your final paragraph should state any conclusions that you are able to draw and bring your essay to an effective close. If you follow these simple steps, you will be able to write a strong compare and contrast essay easily and effectively.
