Compare and Contrast Essay: Quality specific training versus Job specific training
QUALITY SPECIFIC TRAINING VERSUS JOB SPECIFIC TRAINING.
Mr. N.R. Narayana Murthy, chief mentor, Infosys technologies had recently
said that India has over 5.3 million unemployed university graduates even as Indian industry
faces shortage of skilled labour. This goes to show the importance of skilled labour in
industries. Even industries try to develop skills of its employees through various training
program to increase efficiency. Training can be defined as process of gaining knowledge and
acquiring skills for specific purpose. Training helps to impart specific skills whereas
education helps in development of an individual socially and intellectually, both should not
be confused. In this essay I will compare and contrast quality specific and job specific
training in context of an organization, as their understanding becomes simpler in that
reference. Further I would say that both these types of training are essential for prosperity of
an organization.
Quality and Job specific training are similar in many aspects. Firstly, both
inculcate specific set of skills and have a specific purpose. They both have finite duration and
a learning outcome is expected. In both of these training, gaining knowledge by a trainee is
not important but application of this knowledge by him is important. Both of these training
helps to increase efficiency of an individual. Finally they are driven by factors like
advancement in technology, competition and strategies. For example, in a company where a
person is skilled in using MS Excel for all his routine work but a new software called Tally
which reduces the work and is efficient that Excel is available, then training that person to
use Tally is important for an organization.
After looking the similarities between these two types of training let us see in
which aspect they differ, which is more important. To start with I would say that Job specific
training is concerned with ‘mechanical’ aspect and a person is trained for a particular job

whereas Quality specific training involves training a person for a particular job and
empowering him with higher skills which are necessary in smooth functioning of an
organization. Further, Job specific training gives only job related skills whereas Quality
specific training helps to explore untapped skills like self confidence, communication and
decision taking ability. If we consider organization as a pyramid, then, job specific training is
given to employees at lower level like the workers, support staff and unskilled labour. Quality
specific training is given to employees at higher level where decision making is important.
Imparting Job specific training is important because improving the skills of the
workers is important as they are the one who works. Quality specific training is important to
empower managers to handle critical situations and take decisions more effectively. As
employees at all levels helps to increase the productivity and efficiency of an organization,
training them to sharpen and add various skills is important. Finally I conclude that Quality
specific and Job specific training is equally important and an organization cannot work
effectively if anyone of these is missing.
