28. COMPARATIVE STATISTICS (STATES)
This chapter contains Comparative Statistics of States in India.
Table- 28.1 Selected Demographic Characteristics of States as per 2011 Census(P) are
presented in this table. In density of population among states, Bihar is the
highest with 1,102 persons, whereas, Arunachal Pradesh is the lowest with
17 persons per sq.km.
Table- 28.2 Child Population, number of House Holds and Literacy particulars of States
as per 2011 Census(P) are shown in this table. The Leterary Rate is highest
in Kerala with 93.91 and it is lowest in Bihar with 63.82.
Table-28.3 Selected Demographic Characteristics of States as per 2001 Census are
presented in this table. In density of population, West Bengal is the highest
with 903 persons, whereas, Arunachal Pradesh is the lowest with 13 persons
per sq.km.
Table- 28.4 The Economic classification (working classification) as per 2001 Census is
presented in this table.
Table- 28.5 Land utilisation during 2009-10 along with Gross and Net Areas Irrigated is
presented in this table. The Gross Irrigated Area of Uttar Pradesh was the
highest with 188.89 lakh hectares, whereas Mizoram was the lowest with
0.010 lakh hectares among the States.
Table-28.6(A) Area and Out-turn of Food Grains during 2009-10 is presented in this table.
Amon the States the Area and Production of Foodgrains is highest in Uttar
Pradesh where as the Area and Production of Foodgrains are lowest
Mizoram respectively.
Table-28.6(B) Area and Out-turn of Food Grains during 2010-11 is presented in this table.
Among the Staes the Area and Production of Foodgrains is highest in Uttar
Pradesh where as the Area and Production of Foodgrains are lowest in
Mizoram respectively.
Table- 28.7 Source-wise Irrigation for the year 2009-10 are presented in this table. The
Net area irrigated was highest in Uttar Pradesh with 134.57 lakh hectares
and the lowest was in Mizoram with 0.10 lakh hectares.
Table- 28.8 Number of Operational Holdings and Area Operated according to Major size
classes as per Census of Land Holdings, 2005-06 is presented in this table.
The Number of Holdings in Uttar Pradesh was the highest with 224.58 lakh,
whereas, Goa had the least number with 0.53 lakh holdings. The highest area
operated with 209.39 lakh hectares was in Rajasthan where as in Goa, lowest
area operated was 0.61 lakh hectares. (Contd.)

Table- 28.9 Consumption of Chemical Fertilisers during 2009-10 and 2010-11(P) are
presented in this table. The Total Consumption of Chemical Fertilizers
among the States during 2010-11(P) was highest with 4315.89 thousand
Tonnes in Utter Pradesh, whereas in ArunachalPradesh there was the lowest
consumption with 0.83 thousand Tonnes in terms of plant nutrients.
Table- 28.10 Cattle and Buffaloe population of 2007 Livestock Census is covered in this
table. Madhya Pradesh had the highest Cattle population with 219.15 lakh
whereas, Mizoram had the lowest with 0.35 lakh cattles. In respect of
Buffaloe population, Uttar Pradesh lead the other States by having 238.12
lakh, whereas Sikkim had the lowest among the states. Other Livestock data
viz., Sheep, Goats, Pigs, Horses & Ponies, Poultry etc. according to
Livestock Census 2007 are presented in this table. TamilNadu stood first
with 1281.08 lakh Poultry population whereas Sikkim had the lowest 1.57
lakh in the country.
Table-28.11(A) Total Road length as on 31st March 2009 is presented in this table.
Maharashtra occupied the first place in having 3,99,416 kms, whereas,
Sikkim had the lowest road length with 4,199 kms among the States.
Table-28.11(B) Total Road length as on 31st March 2010 is presented in this table.
Maharashtra occupied the first place in having 4,06,660 kms, whereas,
Sikkim had the lowest road length with 4,420 kms among the States.
Table-28.11(C) Total Road length as on 31st March 2011 is presented in this table.
Maharashtra occupied the first place in having 4,10,521 kms, whereas,
Sikkim had the lowest road length with 4,630 kms among the States.
Table-28.12(A) Number of Registered Motor Vehicles as on 31st March 2010 is presented
in this table. Number of Motor Vehicles were highest in Maharashtra with
157.68 lakh vehicles which includes both transport and non-transport. The
lowest number of vehicles were noticed in Arunachal Pradesh with 0.22
lakh vehicles.

Table-28.12(B) Number of Registered Motor Vehicles as on 31st March 2011 is presented
in this table. Number of Motor Vehicles were highest in Maharashtra with
174.34 lakh vehicles which includes both transport and non-transport. The
lowest number of vehicles were noticed in Sikkim with 0.39 lakh vehicles.

of Registered Motor Vehicles Per Lakh population is presented in this table
as on 31st March 2010.

Table-28.14 Railway Route Length for the year as on 31.03.2011 is presented in this table.
Regarding Route Km per lakh population Gujarat occupied first place
8.73kms followed by Rajasthan with 8.43kms. As concerned with Route
per 1000 Sq. kms of area, Chandigarh occupied the first place in having
137.72 kms and closely followed by Delhi with 123.55 kms.
Table- 28.15 The data relates to Working of Factories under sections 2m(i) and 2m(ii) for
the year 2009-10 in respect of all States & U.T in the Country are presented
in the table. Maximum number of factories registered are seen in Tamilnadu
with 26,790 factories followed by Maharashtra with 19,457 factories and
Andhra Pradesh with 17,471 factories. The Net Value Added is seen highest
in Maharashtra with `1,17,87,242 lakhs in India followed by Gujarat with
`90,02,801 lakh, Tamilnadu with `59,14,310 lakh and Karnataka with
`36,69,992 lakh.
Table- 28.16(A) Data relating to State-wise Power generated and sold during 2009-10 is
covered in this table. The gross generation of power in India during 2009-10
was 7,99,850 G.w.h.
Table- 28.16(B) Data relating to State-wise Power generated and sold during 2010-11 is
covered in this table. The gross generation of power in India during 2010-11
was 8,44,748 G.w.h.

Table -28.17(A) Data relating to consumption of Electricity during the year 2009-10 is
covered in this table. Among all the States the per capita consumption of
electricity was highest with 2004.77K.w.h. in Goa followed by 1,735.51
K.w.h. in Punjab whereas the lowest per capita consumption of 117.48 K.w.h.
is noticed in Bihar.
Table -28.17(B) Data relating to consumption of Electricity during the year 2010-11 is
covered in this table. Among all the States the per capita consumption of
electricity was highest with 2060.65K.w.h. in Goa followed by 1,663.01
K.w.h. in Punjab whereas the lowest per capita consumption of 126.75 K.w.h.
is noticed in Bihar.
Table- 28.18 Villages and Towns electrified and irrigation pump sets energised as on 31st
March,2008 is presented in this table. Cent percent villages were electrified in
Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Kerala, Punjab and Tamilnadu States.
Table- 28.19 Particulars of number of Scheduled Commercial Bank Offices, Deposits and
Credits along with Credit Depost Ratio as on March, 2012 are covered in this
table. There are 96,059 Commercial Bank Offices in India of which 11,567
are in Uttar Pradesh and least number of offices 87 are located in Manipur.
The All India Per Capita Deposit goes to `50,191 where as Per Capita Credits
reaches to `39,915.
Table-28.20 Data relating to Regional Rural Banks as on March, 2012 is presented in this
table. There are 16,170 Regional Rural Bank Offices in all over India. It may
be seen that out of the total Deposits of `1,83,009 Crores, Uttar Pradesh
superseded the other States with `39,227 Crores of Deposits.
Table-28.21 Tax Revenue and Non-Tax Revenue of Individual States during 2010-11
Revenue Receipts (Revised Estimates) are given in this table. Regarding to
Total Revenue, Uttar Pradesh stood first with `1,443,614 Millions.

Revenue Receipts (Budget Estimates) are given in this table. Regarding to

Expenditure(Revised Estimates) during 2010-11 are furnished in this table. It
is observed that the percentage of Development Expenditure to Total
Expenditure is highest in Puducherry with 76.28.

Expenditure(Budget Estimates) during 2011-12 are furnished in this table. It
is observed that the percentage of Development Expenditure to Total
Expenditure is highest in Puducherry with 74.39.

2010-11 as per Revised Estimates is presented in this table. The share of
Expenditure on both Education and Medical sevices are highest in National
Capital Territory of Delhi with 27.38% and 15.11%.

2011-12 as per Budget Estimates is presented in this table. The share of
Expenditure on Education is highest in Maharashtra with 25.66% where as
share of Expenditure on medical services is highest in National Capital
Territory of Delhi with 13.44%.

of 1-4-2011 are presented in this table. At the end of 1-4-2011, Maharastra
stae has the highest number of consumers with 158.75 lakhs and Meghalaya
has the least number of consumers with 1.38 lakhs among all the States.

and 21.82 Uttar Pradesh 21.53.
