The current South Africa country profile, compiled by the World
Health Organisation states that the estimated national HIV prevalence
among the general population aged 15 – 49 years has remained at 17.3% since 2005 (Department
of Health Strategic Plan 2014/15-2018/9).
Additionally, strong correlations have also been reported between
HIV infection and violence experienced at the hands of an intimate partner. A 2010 study
conducted by Gender Links and the Medical Research Council reported that more than half of the women
murdered in 2009 (56%) were killed by an intimate partner
The country profile, states furthermore that two in three TB patients also have HIV, with the
country having one of the highest TB incidence rates in the world
(834 per 100,000 population). The treatment success rate for new and relapse cases registered in 2013 is
78% (Global TB Report 2015).

South Africa also contributes about 10.4% of the global burden of reported Multi-drug Resistant
Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) initiated on treatment. Diagnosis and
management of drug resistant cases account for nearly half of the TB budget, and treatment success rates are 49% for MDR-TB and 20% for XDR-TB (Global TB Report, 2015)
Over and above that, the number of social grant recipients in South Africa have increased
exponentially over the past twenty years: from an estimated 4-million in 1994 to 16.9-million by 30
September 2015 (Ferreira, 2016), and subsequently the Department of Social Development is currently
considering extending the Child Support Grant (CSG) to age 23, partly because of the large number of
child-headed households where older children take care of younger siblings (Ferreira, 2016)
We contribute to health systems strengthening for the prevention, management and treatment of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in South Africa and into the continent.
