SITECH ENGINEERING LIMITED was incorporated on the 6th day of
June, 1989, with the main objectives of providing Geotechnical
Engineering and Laboratory Services to Civil Engineering, Structural,
Architectural Consulting Firms, Building and Civil Engineering
Contractors, Foundation Specialist and building material industries.
Site investigation is the first crucial step in design and construction when
the cost and practicalities of building project on a particular site are
evaluated. It is vital to the success of any construction project, since
inadequate investigation can lead to very large construction over - runs. In
order to be effective, site investigation must be carried out in a systematic
way using techniques that are relevant, reliable and most effective.
The overall responsibility for the consequence of site investigation is
increasingly placed on Engineers, even when the work is carried out by
others; the need for them to understand and be fully in control of the
process has become imperative. This is to ensure our structures are Build
on Sound Foundation.

4.0 FIELD TEST PROCEDURES
We offer clients a full range of Geotechnical engineering and geological
services, including site exploration and evaluation of geologic hazards,
development of foundation, earth work recommendations and
construction monitoring. We can also integrate Geotechnical engineering,
engineering geology, seismology and environmental services to facilitate
sitting and design of dam structures as highlighted below:
To ensure adequate foundation for the dam axis and the embankment, it is
necessary to conduct extensive investigation on the proposed dam axis
and the availability of the local soil material within the vicinity of the dam
site.
Therefore, the under mentioned tests are quite relevant for site exploration
and evaluation:
* Geophysical Investigations.
* Conduct Dutch Cone Penetration Test (DCPT).
* Conduct Standard Penetration Test (SPT) at every 1.5m depth
interval in order to determine in - situ, the shear strength of the soils
at which the core of the dam will be founded.
* Coring of rock samples to analyze the rock samples and ascertain
any geologic hazards.
(A). Drilling Methodology (Test Boring)
The borehole will be done in continuous coring mode with drilling guage
Ø 130mm – 85mm in diameter, decreasing towards the bottom. With
simple and double core barrel to make sure the maximum core will be
recovered.
To hold the wall bore, we will use a casing (temporary tube) Ø 150-
101mm in diameter decreasing towards the bottom.
The core sample will be stored in soil sample box, for each samples we
will have the following records: borehole number, withdraw depth, data,
station, starting and ending tripping points.
(B). STANDARD PENETRATION TEST (SPT)
Standard penetration test (SPT) will be carried out at 1.5m intervals in
slightly to fairly consistent or loose soils. SPT will be conducted in
SITE EXPLORATION, CHARACTERIZATION AND EVALUATION
accordance with ASTM D1586-92. The SPT will be done using a split -
barrel sampler having 2" outside diameter. During the SPT test, the
sampler will be hammered into the ground with the number of blows
recorded. The sample would be collected in a dedicated split spoon
sampler that will be opened on site.
The standard penetration tests (SPT) involves driving a split-spoon
sample barrel into the ground from the bottom of a borehole by dropping
a 140 lb (63.5kg) hammer a height of 30inches (0.76m); from the test, a
penetration resistance or blow count (N-value) is obtained which equals
the number of blows to drive the sampler over the depth interval between
6 and 18 inches (150 to 450mm). The N-value is reported in blows per
foot (blows per 300mm). Standard testing procedures are described in
ASTM D 1586.
Main specifications are as follows:
Testing points will be done at 1.5m interval drilling, calculating the Nvalue
reported in blows to drive the sampler at the depth of equal interval
15cm each one of the split-barrel sampler;
For each test, first will be done the cleaning of the end-boring, removing
any obvious contamination derived from drilling. Sign the water level;
The samples will be removed from the split-barrel and wrap it or seal in a
plastic bag to retain moisture. Mark the sample “bottom” if applicable
and label it with an identification number, withdrawal depth and
withdrawal station;
The test will be stopped when the sum of the number of blows for
increments
“N”value it will be N = 50 blows;
Where the test will achieve Nvalue = 50 the boring test shall be continued
until an appropriate bearing stratum where more than an Nvalue = 50 is
found and further drilling shall be conducted into the stratum at least of
5meters in depth; Find the plates 4.1-4.3 showing the various drilling
Rigs.
If the test will not be meeting the above conditions (Nvalue = 50 blows or
boring reaches rock stratum) within 50 meters in depth, the bore drilling
will be stopped.
(C) CONE PENETRATION TEST (CPT)
The cone penetrometer test consists of forcing a hardened steel cone
continuously into the ground and measuring its resistance to penetration.
The standard cone used has an apex angle of 60o and a base area of
10cm2.
The hydraulic operated static penetrometer of 20Tons was used in the
cone resistance soundings. The machine consists of a steel frame carrying
a driving head which houses the hydraulic capsule. The driving head can
raise or lowered by manually operated winch or motor driven hydraulic
ram.
Mechanical mantle cone with friction jacket was used in the operation.
The cone assembly is pushed into the ground by means of steel rods,
connected length, into the driving head. Discontinuous sounding
procedure was adopted in the test. The cone in its retracted position is first
force into the ground at a distance of 20cm by application of force to the
outer sounding tubes. The cone is then pushed out at a distance of 4cm at
rate approximately 1cm/secs. The pressure required to advance the cone
transmitted through the capsule in the driving head to the gauge is
recorded. The machine measures skin friction value of the material with
friction jacket behind the cone. The outer tube is then advanced a 20cm
further where the same operation is carried out and recorded. This
procedure is repeated until a refusal where the total resistance to
penetration of the tube and cone reaches that of the machine.
Successive cone resistance readings are plotted against the depth to form
resistance profile. The tests are conducted according to ASTM D5778
standards.
( D ). LABORATORY TEST
The undisturbed samples should be withdrawn in the cohesive soil (sandy
silty, silty sand, clayey sand, clay, etc....).
On the disturbed sample for the incoherent soil (or soil with little contents
of clay or silt) should be done geotechnical tests as well as follows:
Determination of unit weight
Specific gravity
Particle-size distribution tests (dry)
Hydrometer analysis (wet)
Liquid Limit (Atterberg limits)
Moisture content
Shear test
On the undisturbed sample for the cohesive soils (or samples with high
contents of clay or silt) should be done geotechnical tests as well as
follows:
Determination of unit weight
Specific gravity
Particle-size distribution tests (dry)
Hydrometer analysis (wet)
Liquid Limit (Atterberg limits)
Moisture content
One-Dimensional consolidation (oedometric test) with calculation of
following parameters: mv, Cv, K
Triaxial test Unconsolidated Undrained.
The TEAM field engineer will inspect and describe the samples collected
in accordance with ASTM D2487-92 “Standard Classification of Soils for
Engineering Purposes (Unified Soil Classification System)”. Each sample
will be placed in a plastic bag for further identification tests in the
laboratory.
In zones of extremely consolidated soils or very soft rocks (sandstones,
marls, and clays), rotary coring will be undertaken using at least 76mm
nominal diameter double tube, with face discharge rotary core barrels. In
case of low recovery with the diameters, larger ones will be used.
For each core, the Total Core Recovery (TCR) will be recorded along
with the Solid Core Recovery (SCR) and the Rock Quality Designation
(RQD). For each run, the coring time will be recorded and the water
return status will be noted as these parameters provide very useful
information on the hardness of the rock encountered and the extent of
fracturing. The TEAM Supervising Engineer will record the spacing of
the fractures within the rock and classify the rock, as well as note the
groundwater depth if it is encountered. The structural details will be
recorded in accordance with the general methods proposed in ‘The
logging of rock cores for engineering purposes’, Report of the Geologic
Society Engineering Group Working Party, Quarterly Journal of
Engineering Geology, Volume 3, No. 1, December 1970.
Rock samples will be placed in designated boxes and photographed. The
selected samples designated for laboratory testing will be properly double
wrapped in order to avoid any loss of moisture.
The disturbed samples will be labeled as follows;
Station;
Top sample and bottom sample;
Withdraw data;
Withdraw depth;
Borehole Number.
